Carneades' Pithanon And Its Relation To Epoche And Apraxia, Suzanne Obdrzalek
Carneades' Pithanon And Its Relation To Epoche And Apraxia, Suzanne Obdrzalek
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Though the interpretation of ancient texts is notoriously difficult, Cameades presents what one might call a worst-case scenario. In the first place, he wrote nothing. His faithful disciple Clitomachus, attempting to play Plato to Cameades' Socrates, reportedly recorded Cameades' teachings in four hundred books. Not one remains. However, Clitomachus' attempt to make a philosophy of Cameades' anti-theoretical stance was not a complete failure; Cameades had a tremendous influence on the later Academy as well as the Stoa, and his views (or lack thereof) have been handed down to us by both Sextus Empiricus and Cicero. These sources are, nonetheless, problematic. …

When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson
When Urban Education Meets Community Activism: A Case Of Student Empowerment In New Orleans, Lisa Richardson
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This is an ethnographic study of urban education and community development in the city of New Orleans. In New Orleans, as in all American cities, the public schools are at the center of local politics and the policies that affect community life. Institutions of public education have come under fire for failing to prepare youth to compete in the global economy. This is particularly true in urban communities, where schools serve a higher proportion of students of color facing greater incidences of poverty, underemployment and economic distress. As education policymakers and business leaders look to improve education, many of the …

The Relationship Of Home Environment And Kindergarten Readiness., Nancye C. Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between home environment and school readiness of children entering kindergarten in a rural East Tennessee county. Family and home environment variables included family income, family structure, parents' education, participation in literacy activities, availability of home learning tools, and amount of children's television viewing. A self-reported parent survey was used to gather information about the family environment; the Brigance K Screen was used to determine entering kindergartner's readiness for school. Three hundred and thirty eight children and parents participated.
An initial analysis of data incorporated simple descriptive statistics in the form …

A Framework For Automatic Ontology Generation From Autonomous Web Applications, Giovanni Modica
A Framework For Automatic Ontology Generation From Autonomous Web Applications, Giovanni Modica
Theses and Dissertations
Ontologies capture the structure, relationships, semantics and other essential meta information of an application. This thesis describes a framework to automate application interoperability by using dynamically generated ontologies. We propose a set of techniques to extract ontologies from data accessible on the Web in the form of semi-structured HTML pages. Ontologies retrieved from similar applications are matched together to create a general ontology describing the application domain. Information retrieval and graph matching techniques are used to match and measure the usefulness of the ontologies created. Matching algorithms are combined together to produce global ontologies based on local ontologies inherently present …

Effective Diagramming Techniques, Ralph H. Palmer
Effective Diagramming Techniques, Ralph H. Palmer
Masters Theses
There are a number of modeling techniques (e.g. E/R, UML, ORM) available to the software developer that claim to have features that facilitate communication of complex systems between the problem and solution domain expert. However, the basis for what “facilitate” means is rarely if at all defined in concrete terms. A new metric for measuring the effectiveness (e.g. comprehensibility, leamability, and facility to support conununications) of software modeling techniques based upon Noam Chomsky’s Universal Grammar is proposed.

The Assessment Of Language Delays In Preschoolers With The Differential Abilities Scales, Tracey Walenta
The Assessment Of Language Delays In Preschoolers With The Differential Abilities Scales, Tracey Walenta
Theses
Language-delayed preschoolers are a heterogeneous population with diverse language skills and needs. Research has demonstrated the need for more psychometrically sound assessment instruments to accurately identify preschoolers with language delays and their specific subtypes in the general preschool population. Research has also demonstrated the Differential Ability Scales to be an effective and psychometrically sound assessment measure for differentiating among preschoolers across a broad range of skills and abilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of the Differential Ability Scales in distinguishing language-delayed preschoolers and specific subtypes of language delays in the general preschool population. It was …

Luther's Doctrine Of The Two Kingdoms In The Context Of His Theology, Heinrich Bornkamm
Luther's Doctrine Of The Two Kingdoms In The Context Of His Theology, Heinrich Bornkamm
Ebooks
In this essay, the distinguished church historian of Heidelberg University gives us a guided tour through one of the most complex and controversial problems in the interpretation of Christian ethics. Luther’s “two kingdoms” doctrine has been variously praised and damned in recent theology. Thinkers such as Nygren, Althaus, and Ebeling have defended the doctrine as the source of a salutary political realism (since it reminds us that no social order as such will ever be identical with the kingdom of Christ), combined with a definite sense of Christian social responsibility (since the “kingdom on the left” is also God’s kingdom, …

The Colorsong Prophecy: Using Gardner's Theory Of Multiple Intelligences To Develop Hero Archetypes For A Young Adult Fictional Fantasy Series Aimed At Promoting A Mythology Of Nonviolence, Danielle Selyse Shylit
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
This synthesis explores the value and possibility of using Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory to inform the development of hero archetypes for use as protagonists in my original fictional fantasy series entitled The Colorsong Prophecy. These seven books, in the process of being written, are intended to provide adolescent readers with strong hero models that mirror the intellectual diversity of their own population and promote a new mythology of nonviolence that depicts nonviolent choices as mighty in their own right. I relate this literary work-in-progress to the foundational theories upon which it is based, examining the relevant literature from the …
Peak Alpha Frequency: An Electroencephalographic Measure Of Cognitive Preparedness, Efthymios Angelakis
Peak Alpha Frequency: An Electroencephalographic Measure Of Cognitive Preparedness, Efthymios Angelakis
Doctoral Dissertations
Background.
Electroencephalographic (EEG) peak alpha frequency (PAF) has been shown to correlate with a variety of phenomena, including age, memory performance in healthy and demented individuals, different emotional states, schizophrenia, anxiety, recovery from stroke, cerebral blood flow (CBF) velocity, brain oxygenation, as well as acute administration of stimulant and nootropic substances. These studies have shown that PAF varies between healthy and clinical individuals, with the latter consistently having lower PAF. Moreover, PAF varies between healthy individuals, reflecting cognitive performance, with better performance being associated with increased PAF. Finally, PAF varies within individuals both between developmental stages and between different cognitive …
Intelligent Fault Tolerant Control For Telerobotic System In Operational Space, Sewoong Kim
Intelligent Fault Tolerant Control For Telerobotic System In Operational Space, Sewoong Kim
Doctoral Dissertations
Telerobotic systems combine conventional teleoperation with industrial automation techniques, such as control, vision, planning, etc, to improve work efficiency, and have been expanding their applications from hazardous and remote areas to unstructured industrial uses. Unstructured environments and uncertainties in task space require human-in-the loop control to ensure and supervise safe operation since present autonomous capabilities cannot handle the vast range of tasks and uncertainties. The inherent characteristics of telerobotic systems make operational faults more likely, and require autonomous fault detection, isolation (FDI) and recovery abilities since the nature of task space makes it difficult for human operators to detect and …
Factors That Enhance Consumer Trust In Human-Computer Interaction: An Examination Of Interface Factors And Moderating Influences, Eun-Ju Lee
Doctoral Dissertations
The Internet coupled with agent technology presents a unique setting to examine consumer trust. Since the Internet is a relatively new, technically complex environment where human-computer interaction (HCI) is the basic communication modality, there is greater perception of risk facing consumers and hence a greater need for trust. In this dissertation, the notion of consumer trust was revisited and conceptually redefined adopting an integrative perspective. A critical test of trust theory revealed its cognitive (i.e., competence, information credibility), affective (i.e., benevolence), and intentional (i.e., trusting intention) constructs. The theoretical relationships among these trust constructs were confirmed through confirmatory factor analysis …
The Development Of Target Skills With A Computer Component, Eden Michelle Abramson
The Development Of Target Skills With A Computer Component, Eden Michelle Abramson
Doctoral Dissertations
Existing research indicates that effective writing is critical to learning and that the use of computer technology in writing instruction can impact student performance. However, researchers have not provided information about the impact of computer-based programs on the acquisition of specific writing skills. To address the topic of specific skill acquisition, this study examined the impact of computer-based practice on a writing curriculum as measured by adjective and adverb usage in writing samples. Participants were students from three seventh-grade English classes in an East Tennessee public school. They were randomly divided into two groups. On a weekly basis, each group …
Concurrent And Predictive Validity Of The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test And The Leiter International Performance Scale - Revised, V. Scott Hooper
Concurrent And Predictive Validity Of The Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test And The Leiter International Performance Scale - Revised, V. Scott Hooper
Doctoral Dissertations
The relationship between two tests of cognitive ability measured nonverbally and the relative capability of intellectual constructs measured by those tests to predict academic achievement (operationalized by end of the year group achievement tests) was examined. One hundred elementary and middle school students were administered the Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (UNIT) and the Leiter International Performance Scale - Revised in counter-balanced order; reading, math, and language scores from Terra Nova were matched with 37 cases in the sample. Correlation coefficients describing the relationship among global scores within the IT and between the UNIT and the Leiter-R were statistically significant (p < .001) and ranged from .33 for the. UNIT Memory Quotient/Leiter-R Fluid Reasoning scores t .90 for the UNIT Full Scale IQ/UNIT Reasoning Quotient and UNIT Nonsymbolic Quotient/UNIT Reasoning Quotient. The coefficient between the UNIT and Leiter-R Full Scale IQ scores was .72 (Q < .001). Mean differences between the UNIT and Leiter-R Full Scale were significant with the UNIT Full Scale IQ score being approximately five points higher than the Leiter-R, t. = 4.73, )2. < .001. Effect size for the t-test was modest, .35. Based on stepwise multiple regression analyses, the UNIT Full Scale IQ predicted all three areas of academic achievement significantly better than the Leiter-R Full Scale IQ score, with the variance accounted for by the UNIT Full Scale IQ score ranging from 39 percent to 55 percent (p. < .01). The Leiter-R contributed an additional 2 percent of variance. In addition, a number of the UNIT and Leiter-R global scores were statistically significant predictors of achievement (e.g., UNIT Reasoning Quotient, Memory Quotient, Leiter-R Reasoning). Results are consistent with prior research that has found the UNIT and Leiter-R to provide comparable measures of general intelligence. However, this is the first study to suggest that the UNIT may be superior to the Leiter-R in its relative capability to predict academic achievement. School psychologists and administrators will find these results useful in choosing assessment instruments to evaluate the increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse population of students.
"Prudence Even Beyond Other Women" : The Rhetorical Maneuvers Of Elizabeth I, Samantha A. Morgan-Curtis
"Prudence Even Beyond Other Women" : The Rhetorical Maneuvers Of Elizabeth I, Samantha A. Morgan-Curtis
Doctoral Dissertations
Elizabeth Tudor (1533-1603) did not set out to better the status of women; as queen, she wanted to neither overturn nor disrupt the very system that authorized her position. Though later generations have anachronistically read her as a type of protofeminist, she saw herself as trying, within necessary constraints, to fulfill simultaneously her roles as both woman and ruler, which meant fitting into the expectations of her society in order to rule and function. However, her society found the very nature of female rule problematic and contradictory to its vision of the "natural order." To accomplish this task, Elizabeth used …
A Case Study Exploration Of The Symbolic Leadership Of Jean Byers Sampson : Civil Rights Activist And Educator, Vincent Michael Pellegrino
A Case Study Exploration Of The Symbolic Leadership Of Jean Byers Sampson : Civil Rights Activist And Educator, Vincent Michael Pellegrino
Doctoral Dissertations
A literature review of leadership revealed that symbols are strategies for understanding and acting. Humans possess knowledge symbolically. Symbols are the starting point for all intellectual and expression. Symbolic leadership, therefore, refers to the idea that symbols can be identified from within the language and actions of leaders. Tierney (1989) identified six symbolic categories from the language of a leader: metaphorical, physical, communicative, structural, personification and ideational. Tierney theorized that symbols were given their meaning from the context in which they resided. Utilizing Tierney's theory, this exploratory study examined archived, documents, artifacts and interview data for the role symbols and …
