The Determinants Of Lebanese Attitudes Toward Palestinian Resettlement: An Analysis Of Survey Data, Simon Haddad
The Determinants Of Lebanese Attitudes Toward Palestinian Resettlement: An Analysis Of Survey Data, Simon Haddad
Peace and Conflict Studies
A principal goal of this study has been to assess the impact of social distance on attitudes towards Palestinian resettlement using comprehensive cross-cultural survey research. The results are clear and consistent for all Lebanese sub-groups. Social distance is a significant predictor of attitudes toward resettlement for all six sub-groups examined. Specifically, social distance is inversely and consistently associated with unfavorable attitudes toward the prospect of the permanent settlement of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. These findings indicate on one hand, that the majority of Sunnis and Druze respondents endorse communal ties with Palestinians and approve their permanent economic, social and political …

The Aftermath Of September 11, 2001: The Targeting Of Arabs And Muslims In America, Susan M. Akram
Faculty Scholarship
THE DEMONIZING OF ARABS AND Muslims in America began well before the terrible tragedy of September 11, 2001. It can be traced to deliberate mythmaking by film and media,2 stereotyping as part of conscious strategy of 'experts' and polemicists on the Middle East,3 the selling of a foreign policy agenda by US government officials and groups seeking to affect that agenda,4 and a public susceptible to images identifying the unwelcome 'other* in its midst.5 Bearing the brunt of these factors are Arab and Muslim non-citizens in this country. A series of government laws and policies since …

Gender And Authority In Almoravid Andalusia: Subjects/Objects Of Regulation In Ibn Abdun's Risala Fi Al Qada'wa Al Hisba, Sean Connor Riordan

Recent strands of western historical writing understand gender in medieval Islamic societies through any of number of local cultural, religious and political discourses. This type of writing shifts the focus of historical research away from questions regarding whether Islam debases or improves the status of women--questions that tend to immobilize the subject in a polemic of competing essentialisms-and instead finds gender as having been produced in historically dynamic local processes. My thesis attempts to contribute to th.is literature by exploring how gender functioned as a regulatory issue in the context of the Almoravid political-religious movement in alAndalus through a close …

Mamluk Female Patronage, Nanis Nabil Hanna
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is discussing the topic of Mamliik Female Patronage in Egypt and how it differed from its contemporaries in Jerusalem, Seljuq Anatolia, and Timurid Iran. This subject, however, has not attracted the attention of many scholars, probably, because the information provided by the chronicles and biographers oqhe Mamliik period is scattered and incidental. This is also related to the age-long assumption that women had neither the economic resources nor the legal standing to commission works of art or buildings. The scholars who approached this topic were dealing with the subject from an architectural point of view and not in …

The Role Of Faith In Cross-Cultural Conflict Resolution, Abdul Aziz Said, Nathan C. Funk
The Role Of Faith In Cross-Cultural Conflict Resolution, Abdul Aziz Said, Nathan C. Funk
Peace and Conflict Studies
Excerpt
When we speak of the role of faith in cross-cultural conflict resolution, our challenge is to honor the diversity of the world’s humanistic and spiritual traditions while seeking common ground among them. What we aspire towards, in other words, is an agenda for research, dialogue and activism that is global in conception and responsive to common challenges of peacemaking and coexistence within and among the world’s many traditions. It is no longer sufficient for transnational peace agendas to be defined primarily by the cultural experiences and perceived security threats of a particular nation or culture. We need new frameworks …

Examples of Student Diversity
The vignettes and short snapshots in this booklet give the reader just a hint of the richness and diversity of experiences of IMSA alumni from Central and Southern Illinois. Space precludes telling so many other stories, of how horizons broadened as students accepted the opportunities at IMSA.
Thank you to Series Editor Cathy Veal, Vice President for Advancement, whose vision brought these booklets to life. lean Bigger of IMSA's Furnas Information Resource Center (IRC) created the title, design concepts, and the montage. She and Angela Richardson of the IRC gave invaluable ongoing counsel. Many thanks also to Jerre Henriksen, Juan …

Wild Plant Classification In Little Dixie : Variation In A Regional Culture, Justin M. Nolan
Wild Plant Classification In Little Dixie : Variation In A Regional Culture, Justin M. Nolan
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
This study examines the relation between folk expertise and wild plant classification in Little Dixie, a seven-county vernacular cultural region in central Missouri. A successive pile-sort task was administered to ten local wild plant "experts" and ten "novices" of Euro-American descent to investigate how ethnobotanical knowledge influences the cognitive construction of folk taxonomies. The results indicate that experts categorize plants according to utilitarian features (e.g., edibility, medicinal value) and morphology (e.g., herbs, trees) while novices rely almost exclusively on morphological traits. While the classification strategies of experts and novices are substantially different, a single categorization system is common to both …
