Cloistered Correspondence: Review Of When Prophecy Still Had A Voice: The Letters Of Thomas Merton And Robert Lax, Ed. Arthur W. Biddle., Claire Badaracco Sep 2001

Cloistered Correspondence: Review Of When Prophecy Still Had A Voice: The Letters Of Thomas Merton And Robert Lax, Ed. Arthur W. Biddle., Claire Badaracco

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The publication of these 346 letters over thirty years between Thomas Merton and his friend Robert Lax, who died in Olean, New York, three months before its publication, is timely, comprehensive, definitive, and a significant contribution to Merton studies. This is not light reading. Some of the correspondence is so encoded, privatized, and self-absorbed that the reader needs to compare the letters with the other works of the same period by these writers in order to make sense of things. The edition is scholarly, reliable, a solid addition to one's personal or university library, and highly recommended.

Strike One—You’Re Out! Wildlife Services Helps Reduce Wildlife Conflicts At Airports

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife at airports have risen dramatically in recent years as a result of large population increases in many wildlife species, faster airplanes, and the increase in air transportation traffic. Every year between 1991 and 1997, wildlife strikes cost U.S. civil aviation more than $300 million and 500,000 hours of aircraft downtime. About 2,400 bird strikes to civil aircraft are reported each year, and more than 2,500 are reported by the U.S. Air Force. Since 1990, more than 300 deer collisions with aircraft have been reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Do Crime-Related Expenditures Crowd Out Higher Education Expenditures?, Michael L. Marlow, Alden F. Shiers Sep 2001

Do Crime-Related Expenditures Crowd Out Higher Education Expenditures?, Michael L. Marlow, Alden F. Shiers

Economics

Fears about insufficient public education spending are often expressed in the area of higher education, whereby it is often argued that increases in expenditures on crime-related programs crowd out expenditures on higher education. This view suggests that higher education and crime-related programs directly compete for government expenditures so that what one program gains the other must lose as in a zero-sum game. A competing hypothesis is that higher crime-related spending leads to higher taxes or public debt issuance or to lower spending on programs other than higher education. We estimate a three-equation model of spending on crime-related programs, spending on …

Whose Limit Is It Anyway?, Joseph E. Borzellino

Mathematics

In a tongue-in-cheek manner, we investigate the notion of limit. We illustrate some of its shortcomings and show that addressing these shortcomings can often lead to unexpected consequences.

Hfco2 Laves Phase Intermetallics - Part Ii: Elastic And Mechanical Properties As A Function Of Composition, Katherine C. Chen, Fuming Chu, Paul G. Kotula, Dan Thoma Sep 2001

Hfco2 Laves Phase Intermetallics - Part Ii: Elastic And Mechanical Properties As A Function Of Composition, Katherine C. Chen, Fuming Chu, Paul G. Kotula, Dan Thoma

Materials Engineering

In efforts to establish and understand structure–property relationships in Laves phase intermetallics, elastic and mechanical properties are studied as a function of composition in the C15 HfCo2 system. Elastic constants and Debye temperatures are determined by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) at room temperature. A maximum near the stoichiometric Laves composition is revealed with the Young's modulus, bulk modulus, and Poisson's ratio. In addition, a slight drop in shear modulus is found with Co-rich compositions, and the Debye temperature increases with Co-content. Room temperature Vickers indentation is performed to assess the microhardness and fracture toughness of the HfCo2 alloys. …

Hfco2 Laves Phas Intermetallics - Part I: Solubility Limits And Defect Mechanisms, Katherine C. Chen, Eric J. Peterson, Dan J. Thoma

Materials Engineering

Solubility limits and constitutional defects in Laves phase intermetallics are investigated with the C15 HfCo2 system. Several binary alloy compositions based on HfCo2 are characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and density measurements. Rietveld refinements of XRD scans are used to determine lattice constants, anisotropic strain parameters, and atomic occupancies. Compositional trends are compared against predicted or calculated trends due to an anti-site substitution or vacancy defect mechanism. Geometric models and atomic size factors are used to establish solubility limits and to give insight into defect mechanisms. Results from …

Greenaway's Books, Steven Marx Sep 2001

Greenaway's Books, Steven Marx

English

Peter Greenaway's adaptation of The Tempest is titled Prospero's Books, renaming and representing Shakespeare's play as a work made of books. Prospero begins imagining, speaking and writing The Tempest in his bath while turning the pages of "The Book of Water." It and the other 23 books which inspire and empower him appear in Greenaway's version both as props in the narrative and as "real" documents located in a separate picture plane, where they are described by a donnish voice distinct from that of the protagonist-author.

Compressive Behavior Of Concrete With Vitrified Soil Aggregate, Shane M. Palmquist, Daniel C. Jansen, Christopher W. Swan Sep 2001

Compressive Behavior Of Concrete With Vitrified Soil Aggregate, Shane M. Palmquist, Daniel C. Jansen, Christopher W. Swan

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The compressive behavior of portland cement concrete with vitrified soil coarse aggregate is the focus of this paper. A total of 10 batches of concrete were examined at four different coarse aggregate volume fractions with three different combinations of vitrified and natural coarse aggregates. For comparison purposes, the ratios of cement, water, and fine aggregates were held constant. The stress-strain curves, modulus of elasticity, compressive strength, and Poisson's ratio are examined as a function of coarse aggregate content. Results show a decrease in compressive strength as the volume fraction of vitrified soil aggregate increased. Moduli of elasticity for concrete with …

Evaluation Of Geomembranes Using An Ultrasonic Method, Nazli Yesiller, Sevil Sungur Sep 2001

Evaluation Of Geomembranes Using An Ultrasonic Method, Nazli Yesiller, Sevil Sungur

Civil and Environmental Engineering

An ultrasonic testing procedure was developed to evaluate geomembranes. The pulse-echo inspection technique was used on the surface of geomembranes without disturbing the material. The equipment required consists of a P-wave transducer, a pulser-receiver, and a signal acquisition system. Travel time of ultrasonic waves and waveform energy are measured to evaluate the condition of geomembranes. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the method. Defects that simulate installation damage and various in-service degradation conditions were induced on samples. The defects were identified with the ultrasonic method at a success rate higher than 98%. Changes in the thickness or …

Watershed Management Technique To Control Sediment Yield In Agriculturally Dominated Areas, John W. Nicklow, Misgana K. Muleta Sep 2001

Watershed Management Technique To Control Sediment Yield In Agriculturally Dominated Areas, John W. Nicklow, Misgana K. Muleta

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Non-point source pollution is recognized internationally as a critical environmental problem. In Illinois, soil erosion from agricultural lands is the major source of such pollution. The erosion process, which has been accelerated by human activity, tends to reduce crop productivity and leads to subsequent problems from deposition on farmlands and in water bodies. Comprehensive watershed management, however, can be used to protect these natural resources. In this study, a discrete time optimal control methodology and computational model are developed for determining land use and management alternatives that minimize sediment yield from agriculturally-dominated watersheds. The solution methodology is based on an …

Simplified Analysis Of Asymmetric Structures With Supplemental Damping, Rakesh K. Goel Sep 2001

Simplified Analysis Of Asymmetric Structures With Supplemental Damping, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This study investigated the effects of neglecting off‐diagonal terms of the transformed damping matrix on the seismic response of non‐proportionally damped asymmetric‐plan systems with the specific aim of identifying the range of system parameters for which this simplification can be used without introducing significant errors in the response. For this purpose, a procedure is presented in which modal damping ratios computed by neglecting off‐diagonal terms of the transformed damping matrix are used in the traditional modal analysis. The effects of the simplification are evaluated first by comparing the aforementioned modal damping ratios with the apparent damping ratios obtained from the …

Computing Cyclomatic Complexity With Cubic Flowgraphs, Yongming Tang, Ali H. Dogru, Franz J. Kurfess, Murat M. Tanik Sep 2001

Computing Cyclomatic Complexity With Cubic Flowgraphs, Yongming Tang, Ali H. Dogru, Franz J. Kurfess, Murat M. Tanik

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Two new methods for the computation of cyclomatic complexity especially for decomposable representations are introduced. Building software by integration is a developing paradigm, especially enabled by the emerging component technologies. Decomposition of the design for a top-down approach is a prerequisite for this paradigm. Cubic flowgraphs are instrumental in providing formalisms for decomposition and integration. Cyclomatic complexity analysis of a design representation that is decomposable is the goal of this research. In addition to introducing cyclomatic complexity computation using cubic flowgraphs, preservation of cyclomatic complexity in the decomposition of the cubic flowgraph is also presented.

Style Matters: Applying--Egads!--Theory To Documentary Editing, Tracy Duvall Sep 2001

Style Matters: Applying--Egads!--Theory To Documentary Editing, Tracy Duvall

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Historical editors rarely cite theory to justify particular editorial practices. Instead, they usually make appeals to common sense and personal experience. Of course, "eyeballing it" is legitimate, but documentary editors should inform themselves about linguistic and literary theory to create better-informed policies for transcription and translation. Increasing theoretical sophistication will lead editors to pay more attention to reproducing an author's style. (The hyphenation of re-producing is meant to remind the reader that transcription and translation are creative acts [thus, produce] but that this creativity is constrained by the goal of fidelity to the source text [thus, re-].)
