Flour Protein Content And Fat And Sugar Replacers : Effects On Wire-Cut Cookie Spread And Texture And Sensory Perception Of Cookie Attributes, Kimberly A. Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations
For part 1 of a 2-part study, a randomized balanced incomplete design, blocked on day, was used to test the effects of 4 flours at 5.8, 7.5, 8.8, and 10.4% protein, 3 fat replacers (Betatrim, Stardri, and Simplesse) at 0, 35, 55, 75% fat reduction, and 3 sugar replacers (Sucralose, Isomalt, and Maltitol) at 0, 45, and 65% sugar reduction on cookie quality. Cookie spread (width/thickness) and hardness (g) were measured. Full-fat and 35 and 55% reduced-fat cookie spread decreased as flour protein increased (p = 0.0102) as did flour hydration properties. Within each flour, cookies made with Betatrim at …

Eeg Coherence And Amplitude Effects Of Rhythmic Auditory And Visual Stimulation With An Emphasis In Computational Methods, Jon Alan Frederick
Eeg Coherence And Amplitude Effects Of Rhythmic Auditory And Visual Stimulation With An Emphasis In Computational Methods, Jon Alan Frederick
Doctoral Dissertations
The photic driving response, the effect of a flashing light stimulus on the cortical EEG, has proven to be a sensistive neurometric that varies with differences in perception, mood, and physiological states. The diverse effects of photic stimulation have made commercially available "brainwave syncronizers" popular among consumers and even among some clinicians. It is common in the design of these devices to combine a rhythmic auditory stimulus with the visual stimulus. However, little if any experimental evidence supports the assumption that auditory stimulation enhances the photic driving effect. Therefore, this study compared the amplitude and coherence effects of three stimulation …

Ecological Problems With Iowa's Invasive And Introduced Fishes, Neil P. Bernstein, John R. Olson
Ecological Problems With Iowa's Invasive And Introduced Fishes, Neil P. Bernstein, John R. Olson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Since the time of European settlement, at least 59 non-indigenous fish species have been introduced, reached, or moved within Iowa waters. At least 28 nonnative fish species have been introduced into, or reported from Iowa waters since settlement. Of that number, 10 are established at this time through natural reproduction. In addition, many species of native fishes have been translocated within the state, and we provide documentation for 31 of these species. Two translocated species, gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) and yellow bass (Marone mississippiensis), have had adverse impacts on Iowa's aquatic ecosystems. While many introductions are thought to be benign, …
Pecos Revisited: A Modern Analysis Of Earnest Hooton’S, The Indians Of Pecos Pueblo, Katherine Elizabeth Weisensee
Pecos Revisited: A Modern Analysis Of Earnest Hooton’S, The Indians Of Pecos Pueblo, Katherine Elizabeth Weisensee
Masters Theses
The extensive data recorded by Earnest Hooton (1930) during his years of work on the analysis of the remains recovered from Pecos Pueblo provides an excellent database for reconsidering his conclusions within a modern context. The first issue addressed in re-examining Hooton’s data relates to the sex estimations made for the Pecos sample. Researchers, specifically Ruff (1991), questioned the highly biased sex ratio that Hooton reported for the sample. Using the craniometric and postcranial metrics data that Hooton collected it was possible to re-evaluate Hooton’s sex estimations by utilizing discriminant functionanalysis in order to establish a more accurate sex ratio …
Bacteremia Associated With Early Childhood Caries, Eddie Chang
Bacteremia Associated With Early Childhood Caries, Eddie Chang
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Previous research has investigated the post-operative bacteria levels caused by a variety of clinical procedures such as anesthetic injections, standard dental procedures, endodontic treatment, periodontal surgery, root scaling, and oral surgical procedures in children. Other studies have suggested that bacteremias are often caused by oral infections. Although numerous studies have examined how oral infections lead to various medical conditions (i.e. brain abscess) none have studied the potential for preoperative bacteremia that may arise in conjunction with early childhood caries (ECC). The purpose of this study was to compare potential systemic facultative and anaerobic bacteria found in otherwise healthy children who …

The Analysis Of Selective Information Processing And Neuropsychological Functioning In Individuals At-Risk For Eating Disorders: The Use Of A Pictorial Adaptation To The Stroop Paradigm, Using Print Media Advertisements, Kristine L. Lokken
Theses and Dissertations
There is evidence that women with bulimic symptoms are characteristically impulsive and have difficulty inhibiting various behaviors. Neuropsychological profiles of women with bulimic symptoms show patterns of impulsivity, inefficient problem solving ability, and an inability to inhibit irrelevant information. Women with bulimic symptoms also express substantially greater acceptance and internalization of sociocultural mores of thinness, and are more vulnerable to negative influence from laboratory exposure to stimuli representing “thin ideal” stereotypes. The present study examined a possible common link between the characterological and neuropsychological features of women with bulimic symptoms and their susceptibility to negative influence from mass media representations …

Etiology And Rehabilitation Effect Of Stroke In Child: A Casereport, Li-Chen Tung, Kwok-Tak Yeung, Chun-Hou Wang, Wen-I Liang, Liu-Ing Bih
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The incidence of strokes in childhood is 2.5/100,000. Of these, occlusive stroke accounts for 57 to 85 percent, and hemorrhagic stroke accounts for 15 to 51 percent. Occlusive stroke is primarily caused by congenital heart defects, and the principal symptom is acute hemiplegia. Hemorrhagic stroke is caused mostly by abnormalities of blood vessels, and is characterized by headache and loss of consciousness. Compared to adults, children have better collateral circulation and incompletely developed brains. The clinical and recovery courses those in children are different from those of adults. The prognosis and the incidence of stroke recurrence are largely determined by …

The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Native American Patients With Diabetes And Their Relationship To Seeking Health Care, Madonna Azure
The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Native American Patients With Diabetes And Their Relationship To Seeking Health Care, Madonna Azure
Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes Mellitus is a major health problem for Native Americans. There has been an increase in the prevalence rate of Type 2 diabetes among this population. The increase in Type 2 diabetes has been attributed to major lifestyle changes such as decreased physical activity and a diet high in fats. The number of diagnosed patients with diabetes has almost doubled over a ten-year period on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes and behaviors of Native American patients with diabetes and their relationship to patients' seeking health care services. The variables studied …
Characterization Of Organo-Tin And Organo-Mercury Compounds With Electrospray Mass Spectrometry, Kan Zhu
Characterization Of Organo-Tin And Organo-Mercury Compounds With Electrospray Mass Spectrometry, Kan Zhu
Masters Theses
Metal-containing compounds are often found as pollutants in the environment. Obtaining speciation information about these compounds is important to understanding toxieity and bioaccumulation. Electrospray Mass Spectrometry (ESMS) is a technique that has the potential to provide rapid and direct speciation information of solution phase metal compounds. The ionization behavior of chemical species is related to their electron affinities. The higher the electron affinity, the easier it will be reduced during the ionization process. Additionally, solvent with different polarity and surface tension will also affect the ionization and reduction products. Organo-tin compounds with more alkyl groups will be ionized more efficiently, …
