El autor estudia dos ejemplos poco conocidos de entremeses con elementos americanos, la segunda parte de El martinillo, entremés cantado de Luis Quiñones de Benavente, fechado entre 1634 y 1635, y Los casamientos de Vicente Suárez de Deza y Avila, que se supone escrito antes de 1663. En los dos casos se observa la trívialización cómica del mundo americano, en el primero a través de una alegoría que esconde algunas críticas acerca de la colonización, y en el segundo por medio de un tratamiento ridiculo del personaje del indiano fmgido, interesante invención de los dramaturgos de la comedia nueva. …

A él deben añadirse las comedias que tratan las andanzas indianas del clérigo Pedro Ordóñez de Ceballos: dos piezas de Alonso Remón y una comedia de fr. Francisco de Guadarrama, con dos continuaciones anónimas sobre cuya autoría se especula hoy. Influent wastewater toxicity causes upsets in the operations of biological wastewater treatment systems. Toxic compounds cause the loss of higher life forms in activated sludge, the formation of pin floes that settle poorly in downstream clarifiers and increase the addition of costly polymers. Ultimately, these effects lead to the degradation of effluent quality. In the most severe circumstances, influent toxicity can lead to a plant shut-down and the discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment. These effects can be avoided if influent wastewater is screened for toxicity and protective actions are taken to prevent damage to the activated sludge. Possible …

El artículo empieza con un repaso de la crítica previa del papel del Diablo y "lo diabólico" en la comedia en general. En el Nuevo Mundo esta presencia se manifiesta principalmente por el mayor de los engaños, la idolatría, que aparece constantemente como tópico en las comedias americanas del repertorio establecido por Zugasti. Sigue un breve análisis estadístico de la presencia del Diablo en el repertorio, con las correspondientes conclusiones. This dissertation examines the interaction between the various forces of Polish "nationalism" and "feminism" in the construction of women's physical culture in modern Poland from the late nineteenth century until the end of the twentieth century. The basic premise of this work is that unlike most western countries where sportswomen have typically been marginalized in their athletic endeavors, Polish female athletes have earned far greater respect and recognition in the development of their physical culture. This thesis attempts to explain variability of word order in Russian declarative sentences. I argued that Russian word order is not "free" but encodes different types of focus: predicate, sentence, and narrow. Chapter 1 of this thesis critiques several theories of grammar that attribute alternative word orders in Russian primarily to differences in style. Chapter 2 discusses the advantages of Lambrecht's information structure theory and Role and Reference Grammar as a theoretical framework for my research. Many churches, however, appear to try to ignore the issue; or turn to abusive or neglectful behavior toward homosexuals. In his paper, "Aimé Césaire and Gestures toward the Universal," Gary Leising argues that Césaire's Notebook of a Return to the Native Land presents a speaker struggling with his own identity, torn between a double consciousness of his black African heritage and his French-European education. This dichotomy appears in the poem in terms of his perceptions of his ancestry as well as in symbols of the masculine and feminine in the surrounding landscape. In his paper, "Language, Vagueness, and Social Communication," Colin B. Grant adopts an interdisciplinary approach to an interrelated complex of language, communication, and society. Grant operates with a modified concept of vagueness as a pragmatic property and attempts to establish a link between pragmatic vagueness and contingency in communication. This communicative contingency takes the form of improbabilities (entropy). Grant observes that the challenge lies in modelling communication as porous networks which nonetheless enable society to function. In this sense, contingency in communication must not be confused with arbitrariness just as cognitive closure cannot be confused with solipsism. This line of …

Menéndez y Pelayo había señalado (1900), como fuentes históricas de El Nuevo Mundo descubierto por Cristóbal Colón, de Lope de Vega, tan sólo las Historias de Gomara y de Oviedo, respectivamente, a las que la crítica posterior ha añadido algunas más. El presente trabajo pretende, por un lado, ampliar el panorama de las fuentes lopescas, incluyendo entre ellas a Pedro Mártir de Anglería y a Femando Colón, hijo del Descubridor; y por otro, se propone estudiar la constante remodelación a la que el dramaturgo somete sus modelos, orientándola según su poética y su estilo dramático.

In this study, my overarching principle is that readers’ ideologies are likely to influence the way they read texts, and that texts, in turn, often influence readers’ preconceived ideologies. This thesis is an attempt to understand how to use the theories of Kenneth Burke, Donna Haraway, and rhetoric of technology scholars toward the goal of social change in favor of Haraway’s cyborg political model, which stresses the need for unity within feminism, socialism, and other politically left groups. Burke argues that form in texts is the creation and fulfillment of desires in the audience. I examine several of Burke’s texts …
