Inflationary Bias In A Simple Stochastic Economy, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We construct explicit equilibria for strategic market games used to model an economy with fiat money, one nondurable commodity, countably many time- periods, and a continuum of agents. The total production of the commodity is a random variable that fluctuates from period to period. In each period, the agents receive equal endowments of the commodity, and sell them for cash in a market; their spending determines, endogenously, the price of the commodity. All agents have a common utility function, and seek to maximize their expected total discounted utility from consumption. Suppose an outside bank sets an interest rate rho for …

Computing The Shape Of The Image Of A Multi-Linear Mapping Is Possible But Computationally Intractable: Theorems, Raul A. Trejo, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2001

Computing The Shape Of The Image Of A Multi-Linear Mapping Is Possible But Computationally Intractable: Theorems, Raul A. Trejo, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In systems without inertia (or with negligible inertia), a change in the values of control variables x1,...,xn leads to the immediate change in the state z of the system. In more precise terms, for such systems, every component zi of the state vector z=(z1,...,zd) is a function of the control variables. When we know what state z we want to achieve, the natural question is: can we achieve this state, i.e., are there values of the control variables which lead to this very state?

The simplest possible functional dependence is described by linear functions. For such functions, the question of …

A Spatial-Temporal Statistical Approach To Command And Control Problems In Battle-Space Digitization, David A. Wendt, Noel A. Cressie, Gardar Johannesson Jan 2001

A Spatial-Temporal Statistical Approach To Command And Control Problems In Battle-Space Digitization, David A. Wendt, Noel A. Cressie, Gardar Johannesson

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

There are considerable difficulties in the integration, visualization, and overall management of battle-space information for the purpose of Command and Control (C2). One problem that we see as being important is the timely combination of digital information from multiple (possibly disparate) sources in a dynamically evolving environment. That is, there is a need to assimilate incoming data rapidly, so as to provide the battle commander with up-to-date knowledge about the battle-space and thereby to facilitate the command-decision process. In this paper, we present a spatial-temporal approach to obtaining accurate estimates of the constantly changing battlefield, based on noisy data from …

Managing Minnesota's Recovered Wolves, L. David Mech Jan 2001

Managing Minnesota's Recovered Wolves, L. David Mech

USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center

The Minnesota wolf (Canis lupus) population was estimated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources at 2,450 during winter 1997-1998 and had increased at an average annual rate of 4.5°% since winter 1988-1989. The population may be removed from the federal endangered species list by 2002, and management would then return to the state. A federal recovery team recommended a population goal of 1,250-1,400 wolves for Minnesota, with none in the agricultural region. A plan approved by the Minnesota legislature, however, continues the protection of wolves, except for pet and livestock depredation control, for at least 5 years …

Wiener Model Identification And Predictive Control For Dual Composition Control Of A Distillation Column, H H J Bloemen, C T. Chou, T J J Van Den Boom, V Verdult, M Verhaegen, T C. Backx

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The benefits of using the Wiener model based identification and control methodology presented in this paper, compared to linear techniques, are demonstrated for dual composition control of a moderate-high purity distillation column simulation model. An identification experiment design is presented which enables one to identify both the low and high gain directions of the distillation column, properties which are important for control and hard to identify in a conventional identification experiment setup as is demonstrated in the paper. Data from the proposed experiment design is used for indirect closed-loop identification of both a linear and a Wiener model, which shows …
