Teacher Efficacy, Administrator Efficacy, School Culture, And Leadership Density., Roy Wade Smith Jan 2001

Teacher Efficacy, Administrator Efficacy, School Culture, And Leadership Density., Roy Wade Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined new means for conceptualizing leadership in schools from a non-centrist perspective. Specifically, leadership in schools was conceived of, and studied as, an organizational construct rather than a set of personal attributes associated with positional authority. This non-centrist view of leadership is termed leadership density (Sergiovanni, 1987; Ellett, 1996), and is metaphorically represented in the study by characteristics of a small jazz combo. The primary focus of the study was the development of a new conceptual model of leadership, grounded within the small jazz combo metaphor. In an attempt to understand leadership from this new perspective, linkages between …

The Acute Effects Of Transdermal Testosterone Precursor Administration On Serum Steroid Hormone Levels In Females, Mark Anthony Rasmussen Jan 2001

The Acute Effects Of Transdermal Testosterone Precursor Administration On Serum Steroid Hormone Levels In Females, Mark Anthony Rasmussen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Most governing sports authorities have banned the use of anabolic steroids as ergogenic aids. Recently, a transdermal testosterone precursor dietary supplement (AndrosteDERMRTM) has become available; athletes can apply the cream to their skin with the belief that it will increase serum testosterone levels, muscle mass, and strength. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of one milliliter of AndrosteDERMRTM) applied to the inner surface of the upper arm on the serum levels of androstenedione, and free and total testosterone in female subjects. Serum levels were measured before application and every 45 minutes thereafter for six hours. Serum …

Protoporphyrin Ix Distribution In Rat Brain Following The Administration Of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid And Its Hexylester, Scott Alan Friesen Jan 2001

Protoporphyrin Ix Distribution In Rat Brain Following The Administration Of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid And Its Hexylester, Scott Alan Friesen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Rowett nude rats were injected intra-cranially with varying concentrations of 5-aminolevulinic acid (10, 20, 99, 199, 398 mM) and its hexylester (6.6, 13, 66, 132, 265 mM). Toxicity effects of these compounds were examined based on animal behavior and respiratory distress. It was determined that the maximum tolerable dose for intra-cranial injection is 99 mM 5-Aminolevulinic acid and 66 mM h-ALA; Human glioma spheroids were grown in vitro. After incubation, spheroids were sized (250--350 mum) and injected into the rat brain (10 spheroids per injection). Following the induction and development of glioblastoma multiforme tumors in vivo, Rowett nude rats were …

Performing Arts Manuscript Collections: Balancing Access And Privacy, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2001

Performing Arts Manuscript Collections: Balancing Access And Privacy, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This essay examines some of the issues involved in administering performing arts manuscript collections. After briefly discussing the evolving notion of privacy in both its legal and moral senses, it will turn to the relationships and interlocking responsibilities of the four groups concerned with access to manuscript collections: donors, custodians, users, and "third-party" contributors. Finally, the results of a survey of performing arts repositories will reveal the variety of ways in which these responsibilities are addressed. It will be demonstrated that despite the attention paid to issues of access by professional organizations, agreements in theory, much less in practice, have …

The History Of The Judicial Review Of Administrative Power And The Future Of Regulatory Governance, John J. Coughlin Jan 2001

The History Of The Judicial Review Of Administrative Power And The Future Of Regulatory Governance, John J. Coughlin

Journal Articles

Traditionally, judicial review has afforded an important check on the exercise of administrative power. First, judicial review functions to protect the legislative intent behind the statutory authorization of the exercise of administrative power. Pursuant to the conventional model, an administrative agency exercises restricted legislative and judicial functions under judicial scrutiny to insure compliance with congressional intent. Judicial review insures that "a congressional delegation of power . . . must be accompanied by discernible standards, so that the delegatee's action can be measured for its fidelity to the legislative will." Additionally, the opportunity for judicial review of administrative action corrects and …
