On The Assignment Of Gender To Chicano Anglicisms: Processes And Results, Robert N. Smead

Faculty Publications

The creation of neologisms through linguistic borrowing is a complex process. For donor language models to be transformed into host language replicas, phonological and morphological adaptation must take place. Part and parcel of that adaptation is the assignment of gender to loanwords in a host language like Spanish. The present article examines gender assignment in two corpora of loanwords (New Mexican and Southern Colorado Spanish: N=212 and General Chicano Spanish: N=595). Through the application of variable rule methodology (GoldVarb 2), five factors are posited as significant. Two of these categorically determine gender assignment when present: (1) the biological sex of …

Why Wildeve Had To Die: Mimetic Triangles And Violent Ends In The Return Of The Native, Jeff Massey Ph.D. Jul 2000

Why Wildeve Had To Die: Mimetic Triangles And Violent Ends In The Return Of The Native, Jeff Massey Ph.D.

Faculty Works: ENG (1995-2016)

Although significant critical attention has been directed toward understanding Eustacia Vye’s death in Hardy’s The V^tum of the Native (1878), substantially less has been paid to the other corpse fished from Shadwater Weir, Damon Wildeve. I feel the reasons behind his death remain largely unexplored. Damon and Eustacia, in many ways so similar to one another, meet an identical end beneath the waters of the drainage pool. No small critical effort has been directed towards understanding Eustacia Vye’s death, be it simple suicide, narcissistic death wish (Mitchell), pagan necessity (Giordano), or punishment for gender transgression Deen).

Critical Analysis Of Interventions Against Fgc In Egypt, Nahla G. Abdel-Tawab, Sahar Hegazi Jan 2000

Critical Analysis Of Interventions Against Fgc In Egypt, Nahla G. Abdel-Tawab, Sahar Hegazi

Reproductive Health

Community-based programs designed to discourage the practice of female genital cutting (FGC) in Egypt started as early as the 1920s, however, NGOs seldom document the implementation, strengths, and weaknesses of each approach; or difficulties faced in implementation or ways of overcoming those difficulties. The present meta-assessment was designed by the Population Council to address these issues. Recommendations proposed to increase the effectiveness of anti-FGC interventions in Egypt include: conducting formative research to assess the needs of individuals/communities; using more participatory learning techniques in awareness-raising seminars and training workshops; focusing messages not only on the health hazards of FGC, but also …
