Validity Of The Previous Day Physical Activity Recall (Pdpar) In Fifth-Grade Children, Stewart G. Trost, Dianne S. Ward, Ben Mcgraw, Russell R. Pate
Faculty Publications
This study evaluated the validity of the Previous Day Physical Activity Recall (PDPAR) self-report instrument in quantifying after-school physical activity behavior in fifth-grade children. Thirty-eight fifth-grade students (mean age, 10.8 ± 0.1; 52.6%; female; 26.3% African American) from two urban elementary schools completed the PDPAR after wearing a CSA WAM 7164 accelerometer for a day. The mean within-subject correlation between self-reported MET level and total counts for each 30-min block was 0.57 (95% C.I., 0.51-0.62). Self-reported mean MET level during the after-school period and the number of 30-min blocks with activity rated at > 6 METs were significantly correlated with the …

An Analysis On The Effects Of Social Context In The Display Of Anger In Children, Angie Vanmeter
Theses
The purpose of t his research is to determine if social context influences a child's decision to regulate their anger. The subjects used in this study were 20 first, third and sixth grade students totaling sixty children. The categories of social context are as follows: parent, peer and alone. The subjects completed a demographic survey, as well as an aggression questionnaire, designed by the researcher. The results confirmed previous research with regard to the influence social acceptance has over children's actions. This research indicates peers, as being the most influential category in determining a child's response to anger.

Developmental Changes In Verbal And Imaginal Mnemonic Techniques For Serial Recall, Michelle L. Rupiper
Student Work
Children’s ability to use mnemonic techniques was investigated in first, fourth and sixth graders. Children in each age group were assigned to one of three conditions: method of loci, story mnemonic or elaborative control group. Subjects were given three recall tests. Each test was scored with and without regard to the order in which subjects recalled the words presented. Relative to the control group, both mnemonic conditions showed an advantage in memorizing lists of 20 words. However, all conditions, including the elaborative control group showed significant increases in the number of words recalled between the baseline test and recall Test …

Children's Health Perceptions, Amy Forrest
MSN Research Projects
Little empirical knowledge exists regarding children's perceptions of health. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to determine the health perceptions of children with a convenience sample of fourth-grade students at a small elementary school in Northeast Mississippi. The theoretical framework utilized was Bandura's Social Learning Theory. The directional hypothesis in the proposed study was school-age children have a positive perception of health. The Children's Health Rating Scale was utilized as a measurement tool that ranked 17 health-related questions on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 = most negative, 5 = most positive). A high cumulative score indicated …
Demographics At Diagnosis Of Children With Type 2 Diabetes, Marcia Fleming Hammett
Demographics At Diagnosis Of Children With Type 2 Diabetes, Marcia Fleming Hammett
MSN Research Projects
Since 1991 the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes in children has increased at an alarming rate. Researchers have identified some common descriptors which may be predictive of early assessment and intervention for this population. Further validation of established descriptors and identification of other descriptors are needed. In this retrospective descriptive study, one research question guided the study: What are the demographic characteristics of children with Type 2 diabetes at the time of diagnosis? The Neuman Systems Model (198 9) provided the theoretical framework. Data were collected using the Hammett Chart Survey with 3 9 review variables. Charts from three endocrinology …

The Effects Of Group Counseling On The Self-Esteem, Anxiety, And Behavior Of Children With Deployed Parents, Nancy Taylor Mitchum
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a six-session group counseling intervention for children who had a parent experiencing military-induced deployment. Participants were 65 children (30 boys, 35 girls) of enlisted military personnel attending elementary schools near the Norfolk Naval Base. Elementary school counselors facilitated the counseling groups.
An experimental/control group pretest-posttest design was employed. Independent variables were the child's participation in the Children of Deployed Parents-Group/control group, child gender and age. Dependent variables were self-esteem, anxiety, and behavior as measured by the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC), the Child …

A Study Of Factors Related To Children's Interest In Television Violence, Stacy Melinda Renfrow
Theses
Since television is so pervasive in our lives , many researchers have come to study the connection of television on children's development. Research to date strongly indicates associations between aggressive behavior and viewing violent material on television . The present study looked, from the parent's perspective , at the relationship of television on their child' s behavior at home. The study examined the amount of television programming children are watching, the kinds of programming children are watching , how they react to what they see , whether forbidding certain violent programming had an effect on children' s interest in a …
The Effects Of Gender And Behavior On Elementary Teachers' Attributional Assumptions About Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Lisa Rollins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Questionnaires compromised of (a) a description of a child (either male or female) exhibiting attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behaviors (either predominately hyperactive/impulsive or predominately inattentive) and (b) 13 questions about the description were completed by 562 regular elementary education teachers in the state of Utah. The questions, which offered teachers a range of responses on a 5 point Likert scale, were designed to assess the extent to which the gender and behaviors of the child described affected the extent to which teachers were able to identify the child as being representative of a child with ADHD, teachers' attributional assumptions …

Rules, Responsibility And Commitment To Children: The New Language Of Morality In Family Law, Jane C. Murphy
All Faculty Scholarship
Part One of this Article explores the meaning of morality by briefly reviewing a variety of attempts to explore the meaning of moral conduct. This Section draws on a variety of contemporary moral philosophers who have built on the classical tradition to develop a broader definition of moral behavior. This discussion provides a context for the current debate about the meaning of morality in family law and moral discourse in the no-fault era. Part One also reviews the historical debate about how law should strike a balance between promoting communitarian values and respecting autonomy and individual rights. The Article argues …

Chinese Children's Evaluation Of Authority's Responses To Social Events, Pui San Tse
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Chinese children's conceptualization of moral, conventional and personal events and their judgments of authority were examined by assessing their evaluation of authority's responses to these acts. Seventy-two Macau children from second, fifth and eighth grades made judgments of permissibility of acts, personal jurisdiction, and obedience to rules regarding these events and then rated moral, conventional and filial duty reasons provided by parents in response to these events. Findings were that children made distinctions among these events. They also rated moral reasons as the best response to moral transgressions. Children rated both moral reasons and conventional reasons more positively than duty …

Second, it compares the consequences of fatal accidents involving children riding in the back of pickup trucks with those involving school buses and those involving children in airbag crashes in Florida during the same period. Third, using the 1995 Nationwide …
From Family To Care: Issues For The Child, Paul Bailey
From Family To Care: Issues For The Child, Paul Bailey
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
It is still widely held that the traditional or conventional nuclear family is the only suitable environment in which children can grow up and that any deviation from this norm puts children at a considerable disadvantage (Kahan, 1989). The vulnerability of children and young people coming into residential care in Ireland due to their dysfunctional family experiences, and how coming into residential care and their subsequent experience therein can sometimes further increase this level of vulnerability for the adolescent child has been well documented. This paper discusses the question: What can we, as residential child care workers and agencies, do …

Family Law And Gay And Lesbian Family Issues In The Twentieth Century, David L. Chambers, Nancy D. Polikoff
Family Law And Gay And Lesbian Family Issues In The Twentieth Century, David L. Chambers, Nancy D. Polikoff
Articles
Over these thirty years, lesbians and gay men have increasingly challenged conventional definitions of marriage and the family. In this brief article, we tell the story of gay people and family law in the United States across this period. We divide our discussion into two sections: issues regarding the recognition of the same-sex couple relationship and issues regarding gay men and lesbians as parents. These issues overlap, of course, but since family law discussions commonly treat adult-adult issues of all sorts separately from parent-child issues, we believe it convenient and helpful to do so as well.
Intimacy In Marriage: A Comparison Between Married Men With Children And Married Men Without Children, Kurt D. Soell
Intimacy In Marriage: A Comparison Between Married Men With Children And Married Men Without Children, Kurt D. Soell
Theses
This investigation explored the differences in perceptions of levels of intimacy in their marriage between married men with children and married men without children. Participants completed the Intimacy Scale (IS). Levels of intimacy were compared between both groups using a two-tailed independent T-test. The results showed that married men with children showed significantly lower levels of intimacy than married men without children. This study will review definitions of intimacy, marital satisfaction, the development of intimacy, how to improve on intimacy, how to experience intimacy within marriage, and how intimacy is related to the transition to parenthood.

The Relationship Between Working Status Of Mothers And Parental-Child Attachment, Sherri Denise Brown
Theses
The factors which influence the development of attachment between mothers and children were examined in this study. The researcher specifically looked at the differences in attachment with regard to the mother's work status during infancy. Thirty-five adolescent subjects completed the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment test (lPPA). The subjects were categorized into four groups based on what their mothers' work status was during their infancy. The information regarding work status was obtained through a demographic sheet completed by the parents of the subjects.
The test completed by the subjects consisted of twenty-five statements regarding a relationship with their mother. …
Count The Brown Faces: Where Is The “Family” In The Family Law Of Child Protective Services, Ana M. Novoa
Count The Brown Faces: Where Is The “Family” In The Family Law Of Child Protective Services, Ana M. Novoa
Faculty Articles
Can a system developed from intrusion into the lives of the poor be reconstituted to provide services that will nurture the quality of the lives of all children? If not, then the system should be scrapped and start over. Child Protective Services (CPS) has never recovered from its roots in distrust and discrimination against the poor and its mistaken defense of a false moral high-ground, which is perceived from the narrow focus of child-saving rather than on the legitimate and long term needs of children. The foster care system’s lack of concern for natural parents reflects centuries of a dual …

Herd Behavior In Designer Genes, Peter H. Huang
Herd Behavior In Designer Genes, Peter H. Huang
Publications
The ability of individuals to choose their children's genes has increased over time and may ultimately culminate in a world involving free market reprogenetic technologies. Reprogenetic technologies combine advances in reproductive biology and genetics to provide humans increased control over their children's genes. This Article offers economic perspectives that are helpful in understanding the possibly unexpected ethical, legal, and social issues at stake in using reprogenetic technologies for trait enhancement selection. The Appendix analyzes two competitive games that might arise in such a biotechnological society. Specifically, the Article focuses on herd behavior, caused by either a popularity contest or positional …

Parental Rights And The Ugly Duckling, Margaret F. Brinig, F. H. Buckley
Parental Rights And The Ugly Duckling, Margaret F. Brinig, F. H. Buckley
Journal Articles
Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling" is best remembered for its moral, "To be born in a duck's nest, in a farmyard, is of no consequence to a bird, if it is hatched from a swan's egg." Having read and thought about this story many times, we should like to suggest another, less heart-warming, interpretation. The story of the Ugly Duckling, that most resilient of cygnets, masks the tragedy of children who suffer abuse. Its message, that personal spirit will triumph when a child grows up, misrepresents the experience of many victimized children. If we wait for the child to …

A Community-Based Parenting Program With Low-Income Mothers Of Young Children, Bonnie Nicholson, Viktor Brenner, Robert A. Fox
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Research has established a significant relationship between certain parental characteristics. such as income or parenting practices, and the development of child behavior problems. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a parenting program for low-income parents of children one to five years old which was offered through community-based family resource centers. Seventy-one mothers completed the program and showed significant decreases in their use of verbal and corporal punishment and significant increases in nurturing behaviors: their children’s behavior also improved significantly. Forty-five percent of parents also met Jacobson and Truax’s (1991) criteria for clinically significant change. Implications for practitioners working With this …
