Making Do : Case Studies Of Disciple Of Christ Congregations In The Great Depression, Donald Wesley Trotter
Doctoral Dissertations
There has been a voluminous amount of study done on the Great Depression of the 1930s, but most of it has dealt with national organizations and with prominent people, leaders, and spokespersons. Besides individual church histories, little study has been done on local congregations. Yet, churches as voluntary social organizations can be vehicles to investigate the responses of groups to socioeconomic stress. Churches were the arbiters of social ethics and the main sources of benevolent assistance before the Depression, but that changed with the New Deal. My title is somewhat facetious, but not completely. There has been a profound shift in the direction and underlying assumptions of editorial theory and practice during the thirty years in which I have been practicing this craft, and my purpose here is to make some general observations on this topic. I start with a warning, though: most of my comments apply to textual or literary editing, not to documentary editing as it is practiced by literary editors.

Alice Nute was born July 25, 1915 in Houlton, Maine. Her father was a forester; her mother was a teacher who graduated from Bates. Nute went to Ricker Junior College and worked in the Kerry Library in Houlton. She moved to Augusta after college and worked in the state law library from November 15, 1943-May 12, 1978. When she retired, her title at the library was “Deputy Law Librarian.” She married Floyd Thomas Nute, who was Muskie’s press secretary around 1954 when Muskie was governor of Maine.
