Resource Colonialism And Native Resistance: The Mining Wars In Wisconsin, Linda Marie Robyn
Resource Colonialism And Native Resistance: The Mining Wars In Wisconsin, Linda Marie Robyn
Dissertations
In recent years powerful multinational mining corporations have attempted to mine various minerals found on Indian lands in the northern region of Wisconsin. These lands are currently protected from corporate incursion by treaties between the Chippewa people and the United States government. The Chippewa are using the treaties as an obstacle to corporate access to their lands and to protect their lands from the environmental devastation that will occur from proposed mining ventures.
This case study utilizes a power-reflexive method to analyze the power of the state to control rich mineral resources known to be on reservation lands. Under examination …

The Connection Between Public Transit And Employment, Thomas W. Sanchez
The Connection Between Public Transit And Employment, Thomas W. Sanchez
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
Even with a considerable amount of attention being paid to the role of public transportation in addressing inner-city mobility problems, there is very little evidence of the degree to which one affects the other. In other words, little research has specifically focused on how labor participation is impacted by increases in public transportation availability. Research on the spatial mismatch hypothesis has dealt with the relationship between labor participation and the spatial separation of jobs and houses; however, most analyses concentrate on commuting time or distance as a function of auto accessibility. Few, if any, studies have considered the relative impacts …

Utilizing Gis Technology For Brownfields Redevelopment, Jeffrey J. Duteau
Utilizing Gis Technology For Brownfields Redevelopment, Jeffrey J. Duteau
Theses
Typically, when developers, banks and other organizations have an interest in a piece of property they perform an extensive information search to determine if the site is worth purchasing. This search could consist of tax and title information, the location of utilities and major roadways in the area, information on population demographics and environmental contaminant data. An information search of this type could take days, weeks or even months to compile. With a geographic information system (GIS), this search could take a matter of minutes and is displayed in an easy to understand graphic or map form along with a …

A New Approach To Regulatory Reform, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Even though there is a legitimate need for government regulation, it is still a blunt and imperfect tool, often imposing costs that greatly outweigh the benefits. This study presents the need for regulatory reform and suggests a few ways to do so.

The Importance Of Liability For The Redevelopment Of Brownfields : The Developers View, Daniel F. Chachakis
The Importance Of Liability For The Redevelopment Of Brownfields : The Developers View, Daniel F. Chachakis
Theses
The thousands of former industrial properties lying vacant in New Jersey are an economic challenge for all areas of government. If these properties are, or are perceived to be, contaminated then they are labeled Brownfields. An important question is whether the threat of liability for contamination by prior owners is a current cause behind the failure of developers to acquire and redevelop Brownfields in the State of New Jersey.
The goal of this work was to discover if there is a link between liability and the developer's decision making process. How important is the liability factor? Fifty-seven variables were examined …
