Towards A Reconstructive Feminism: Reconstructing The Relationship Of Market Work And Family Work, Joan Williams Nov 1998

Towards A Reconstructive Feminism: Reconstructing The Relationship Of Market Work And Family Work, Joan Williams

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article traces the separation of the work and family spheres, arising in the nineteenth century, and how this separation into traditionally male and female areas has affected women's "choice" to stay home and rear children, or to participate in the workforce. This article explains how women often fail to achieve the ideal-worker norm because of the demands on their time created by childrearing. The author ends by discussing the shortcomings of the classic strategy feminists have proposed to change domesticity's ordering of family and market work and suggests a new paradigm, called "reconstructive feminism," which eliminates the ideal-worker norm …

Nurse Practitioners’ Developmental Screening And Referral Practices For Children With Developmental Delays, Terri Chisolm Smith Aug 1998

Nurse Practitioners’ Developmental Screening And Referral Practices For Children With Developmental Delays, Terri Chisolm Smith

MSN Research Projects

Children with developmental delays benefit from participation in early intervention programs. Yet many children are not screened for developmental delays, and many children with developmental delays are not referred to early intervention programs. Families depend on their primary health care providers for the detection of developmental delays and information about services available for their children with developmental delays. The primary care nurse practitioner is in an ideal position to screen for delays, provide necessary referrals for services, and assist the families in maximizing their self- care potentials. Orem's self-care deficit theory of nursing served as the theoretical framework for the …

Characteristics Of Internalizing Social-Emotional Behaviors Of Southwestern Native American Children, Carolyn Thomas Morris May 1998

Characteristics Of Internalizing Social-Emotional Behaviors Of Southwestern Native American Children, Carolyn Thomas Morris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The knowledge base targeting internalizing symptomatology in Native American children is surprisingly limited. As yet, it is not clear if the process and symptoms of internalizing disorders are the same across cultures. The need for further investigation is heightened by the fact that, compared to the majority population, Native Americans are believed to be at greater risk for psychological problems because of impoverished conditions, high unemployment, and high numbers of traumatic events on the reservations. Additionally, the losses of traditional culture and language are considered risk factors for greater psychopathology. The negative ramifications of internalizing disorders (e.g., depression and anxiety) …

Legal Images Of Motherhood: Conflicting Definitions From Welfare "Reform," Family And Criminal Law, Jane C. Murphy Jan 1998

Legal Images Of Motherhood: Conflicting Definitions From Welfare "Reform," Family And Criminal Law, Jane C. Murphy

All Faculty Scholarship

Part I of this Article explores the traditional idealized view of motherhood that child placement statutes and court decisions reflect. These laws include statutes and case law in custody disputes between parents and in child protection proceedings under civil and criminal laws where the dispute is between the parent and the state. Part II contrasts the legal construct of motherhood that child placement laws embody with the legal image of mothers in child support and welfare law.

Part III examines the impact of these conflicting images of motherhood on a particular group of mothers -- battered women. Battered women illuminate …

Assesing The Family And Medical Leave Act In Terms Of Gender Equality, Work/Family Balance, And The Needs Of Children, Angie K. Young Jan 1998

Assesing The Family And Medical Leave Act In Terms Of Gender Equality, Work/Family Balance, And The Needs Of Children, Angie K. Young

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

While recognizing that parental leave is only one aspect of the FMLA, this Article concentrates on the provision allowing leave to parents in order to care for their children. Before analyzing the FMLA in detail, it is helpful to explore what aims a parental-leave policy should have. The purpose of this Article is to propose and defend three goals that parental-leave legislation should strive to meet: equality of career opportunities for men and women, the right to participate in both work and family, and meeting the needs of children. After articulating what parental-leave legislation should aim for in theory, this …

"O Wind, Remind Him That I Have No Child": Infertility And Feminist Jurisprudence, Linda J. Lacey Jan 1998

"O Wind, Remind Him That I Have No Child": Infertility And Feminist Jurisprudence, Linda J. Lacey

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Feminists have constructed a "grand theory" of infertility and new reproductive techniques that has little to do with reality. Much of the discussion of reproductive technology is written in highly abstract, philosophical terms, rather than in the more experiential, narrative style which characterizes much of feminist jurisprudence. The infertile woman is generally voiceless and invisible in the telling of this story; when she does appear she is dismissed or criticized. This Article is an attempt to begin dialogue which incorporates her perspective into the discussion.

Normative, Validation, And Reliability Studies Of The Nine-Hole Peg Test Scores With Children, Yvonne Smith Widner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to establish norms for fine motor dexterity skills on elementary school children five to ten years old and conduct reliability and validity studies utilizing the Nine-Hole Peg Test. Sample included 1,020 students in ten elementary schools in the Las Vegas area. As children got older, their fine motor speed increased. Significant gender differences were indicated in dexterity in all ages, but only in the dominant hand. Moderately high test-retest reliability and high interrater reliability were obtained. Strong correlation between the NHPT and Purdue Pegboard Test scores provided concurrent validity of the NHPT. Significant difference …

La Familia En La Mira: Nuevas Perspectivas Sobre Madres, Padres E Hijos, Judith Bruce, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Ann Leonard, Patrice L. Engle, Niev Duffy

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Women And Children In The Economy: Reflections From The Income Tax System, Faye Woodman Jan 1998

Women And Children In The Economy: Reflections From The Income Tax System, Faye Woodman

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

I have been asked to speak on “women and economics” with specific reference to the Canadian tax system. It is my thesis that the economic vulnerabilities of women and children in this nation are reflected and reinforced in the tax system. Further, it is my view that societal attitudes about who should support, and how we should support, children contribute to a complex synergy within the economic/tax system. This has the potential to produce a new underclass of government dependents who are dependent because, paradoxically, they receive so little support. Finally, I end with a plea for a broader commitment …

Country Profile Of Women's Health And Development In Indonesia, Population Council

Reproductive Health

The “Country Profile of Women’s Health and Development in Indonesia” contains a thorough review of the following: Geographical, Political, Socio-Demographic, and Economic Profile of Indonesia; Status of Women; and Women’s Health Status. In view of the complexity of the problems facing women, the document concludes that Indonesia needs a plan for the future with a gender perspective that prioritizes increased life expectancy, legal protection, and empowerment for women. To reach this goal, Indonesia started by ratifying the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and set it into law in 1984. Young Families' Utilisation, Self-Perceived Requirements, And Satisfaction With Child Health Services In The City Of Belmont, Western Australia, Ailsa M. Munns

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The expectations of young families regarding care they would like to receive from community nurses working in the child health area is affected by the relationship between those expectations, utilisation and sociocultural factors such as family type, family composition and ethnicity. A descriptive study with both quantitative and qualitative components was used to identify and analyse the self-identified requirements of young families utilising Child Health Services in the Belmont area, Western Australia, and their patterns of utilisation. Twenty five women who had a child or children under …

The relationship between Type A Behavior pattern in elementary children and their self esteem was examined using 68 students. The participants were third, fourth and fifth graders in the Montgomery County School District in central Missouri, who completed the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory (School Form). ln addition these students were also assessed for Type A behavior pattern by their teachers using the Matthew's Youth Test for Health. Correlational results indicated that there was no relationship between a child's Type A behavior pattern and self esteem.
