Repairing Main Street For The Twenty-First Century, Eunice Hsin-Yi Chen Dec 1997

Repairing Main Street For The Twenty-First Century, Eunice Hsin-Yi Chen

Masters Theses

All through history towns and cities have had main roads where there was a greater concentration of businesses, public buildings, religious buildings and residences. To the community, what was often called main street was not just a place to carry on business but a place to meet, gossip and exchange ideas. Because of single-use zoning, scattered development and the car’s particular needs, the strip lacks the communal gathering possibilities of main street. This thesis explores how to reintroduce communal aspects to a main road in the suburban context where structure has been eroded by strip development. The method used is …

Our Communities : Our Urban Forests, Valarie Reese Evans Dec 1997

Our Communities : Our Urban Forests, Valarie Reese Evans

Masters Theses

It is important that the benefits of urban trees and vegetation are recognized in order that their existence be maintained within towns and cities. Urban trees contribute a great deal to a community, including climate modification, air pollution control, noise pollution abatement, conservation of soils, while also providing an environment for wildlife habitats and biodiversity within the community.

The proof that trees and vegetation do, in fact substantially contribute to a healthy environment provides a resource for influencing local government leaders and citizens to recognize the value an urban forestry program has to a community.

Planning For Sustainable Communities : A Comparative Study Of Indicators Of Sustainability In Six U.S. Communities, Leonida S. Corcuera Dec 1997

Planning For Sustainable Communities : A Comparative Study Of Indicators Of Sustainability In Six U.S. Communities, Leonida S. Corcuera

Masters Theses

Cities play a dynamic role in economic and social development and in managing the built and natural environment. Increasing awareness of the consequences of development in the environment and concern about a sustainable future has led many communities to plan for sustainability. Crucial to planning for a sustainable community is determining whether an urban area is moving towards or away from sustainability, which is gauged by various community indicators.

Sustainability indicators are quantitative and qualitative information, which assist a community in identifying its priorities and assess the community’s long-term vitality. Indicators that show trends describe the impacts of human actions …

A Demonstration Project For Sustainable Development Principles : A Case Study In Pittman Center, Tennessee, Micheal G. Collins

Masters Theses

Government leaders, city officials, non-profit groups, and others interested in protecting the environment while promoting economic development are realizing that the key to a healthy future is to promote sustainable development. Pittman Center, a small, mountain community in east Tennessee is interested in taking this step towards sustainable development. City leaders want to develop a vacant piece of property adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the Greenbriar entrance. They want to develop a commercial enterprise on this site based upon guidelines and principles of sustainable development. This thesis outlines and reviews general principles of sustainable development (protecting …

Preferences, Cooperation, And Institutions, Alanson P. Minkler, Thomas J. Miceli Oct 1997

Preferences, Cooperation, And Institutions, Alanson P. Minkler, Thomas J. Miceli

Economics Working Papers

We examine the link between social institutions and individuals' propensity to cooperate in a simple game theoretic framework. To begin, we transform the usual prisoner's dilemma game over material payoffs into one with utility payoffs by including non-material preferences. By introducing a continuum of types, three distinct behaviors (not otherwise imposed) emerge: 1) pure defection, (2) pure cooperation, and (3) behavior contingent on expected partner behavior. All three behaviors emerge in equilibrium and in a static analysis. As such it represents a synthesis of previous, disparate efforts. Exogenous social policy can affect cooperation rates by changing the size of the …

Living Responsibly : A Study Of Sustainable Living In East Tennessee And The Southern Appalachian Bioregion, Jonathan Matthew Scherch

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the ways in which people living and working within East Tennessee and the Southern Appalachian bioregion attempt to do so more sustainably, and by extension, responsibly. A total of 94 subjects participated in guided interviews (N=76), with some interviews having multiple participants. The interviews examined the range of sustainable living practices which were being learned, developed, and practiced; the subjects’ personal pathways to their practices and world views, as distinct from the social mainstream; and the subjects’ demographic characteristics. Results from data analysis drawn from subject responses to both open- and closed-ended questions indicate the following: (a) …

Sustainable Community Planning: Lessons From The Netherlands, Margot Mcdonald Apr 1997

Sustainable Community Planning: Lessons From The Netherlands, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

In 1990, the Dutch Government adopted a national plan to develop integrated and comprehensive policies that would respond on a national, regional, and local level to the need for improved environmental quality for the welfare of current and future generations. The program, called the National Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP), represented a bold effort to develop cooperation and shared responsibility between the public and private sectors setting goals for reduced energy consumption, resource utilization, and improved environmental quality including the reduction of SO2, NOx, and CO2 emissions. This paper reports on key elements of the NEPP …

A Critical Analysis Of The New Urbanism, Metin Cihan Yildirim Jan 1997

A Critical Analysis Of The New Urbanism, Metin Cihan Yildirim

Theses

After suburbia, the new urbanism offers a fresh start to designing human settlements in North America. The movement returns to the traditional American models of human settlements to design the suburbs, to create new communities. The new urbanism seems to use the traditional town model without questioning any of its potentially negative aspects.

In this thesis, the author questions several aspects of the new urbanism movement. The criticism focuses on town location and town pattern. Some influential examples of automobile-age U.S. suburbs, which the movement ignores, are analyzed with new urbanist examples to point out that there may be better …

The Social Reconstruction Of Emotions: Insights From Members Of A 12-Step Community, Sandra Coyle Jan 1997

The Social Reconstruction Of Emotions: Insights From Members Of A 12-Step Community, Sandra Coyle

Clinical Sociology Review

Common among many approaches to the study of emotions that are emerging across disciplines is the fundamental proposition that emotions "are emergent properties of social relations and sociocultural processes" (McCarthy 1994: 269). Consistent with Berger's (1977) assessment of ideas, emotions–their meanings and associated behavioral counterparts–are believed to succeed in history by virtue of their relationship to specific social processes. Hence, as Steams and Steams (1994) observed, emotions have histories that are a part of every individual's socializing environment Emotions, then, are social things that are learned and can be relearned (McCarthy 1989).

As in Power (1984), this paper positions the …

Integration Of Sti And Hiv/Aids With Mch-Fp Services: A Case Study Of The Nakuru Municipal Council's Project On Strengthening Std/Aids Control, James Kariba Wabaru, Bedan Kiare Kariuki, Baker Ndugga Maggwa

Reproductive Health

Kenya’s Nakuru Municipal Council (NMC) operates five clinics located primarily in residential areas with high concentrations of people. The clinics provide basic antenatal, child welfare, STI, and other curative services, and family planning services are available at four of the clinics. One provincial referral hospital operated by the Ministry of Health also provides MCH-FP and HIV/STI services in a special STI treatment clinic. The seven public health facilities in Nakuru Municipality are participating in a collaborative project with the Department of Community Health at the University of Nairobi, the University of Manitoba in Canada, and the Nairobi Municipal City Council. …

Anna Letitia Barabauld's Poetic Vision: Community, Imagination, And The Quotidian, Carrie Ann Woods Jan 1997

Anna Letitia Barabauld's Poetic Vision: Community, Imagination, And The Quotidian, Carrie Ann Woods

Master's Theses

With the publication of her Poems in 1773, favorable reviews welcomed Anna Letitia Barbauld into the literary world. However, Barbauld has traditionally been left out of English literature anthologies, condemned to the murky depths of obscurity. Why has this talented British poet of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries been undeservedly marginalized? Perhaps she has never achieved the status of a major literary figure because her impulse towards community places her outside the mainstream Romantic tradition dominated by the "egotistical sublime." In the poetry of William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and John Keats, an …
