Solid Waste Management And The Need For Effective Public Participation, Catherine A. Solheim, Charles E. Faupel, Conner Bailey
Solid Waste Management And The Need For Effective Public Participation, Catherine A. Solheim, Charles E. Faupel, Conner Bailey
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Recent changes in technical requirements for landfill design, mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, have led to closing the majority of solid waste landfills in the United States. Efforts to site new landfills have elicited widespread opposition. Based on eight case studies in Alabama, we identify three themes behind this opposition: threats to quality of life, potentially harmful economic impacts, and frustration over representational issues in the process involved in selecting the proposed solid waste facility. These concerns mirror much of the literature on public opposition to landfills and other facilities which pose similar threats to the environment and …

Vcu Voice (1997-10-13)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

On July 20, 1969, when “man” landed on the Moon, the United States achieved a remarkable scientific and technological breakthrough. “One small step for . . . man; one giant leap for mankind”; Neil Armstrong’s voice crackled through Mission Control to the millions around the globe who were watching that moment, transfixed by their television sets. Everyone was watching. Everyone that is, but my mother-and the handful of other mothers around the globe who were giving birth at the same moment-to people like me, a generation of moon children.

Global Responsibilities: Ethics, Public Health, And Global Environmental Change, Dale Jamieson
Global Responsibilities: Ethics, Public Health, And Global Environmental Change, Dale Jamieson
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
In this article, Professor Dale Jamieson examines the relationship between
climate change and public health from an ethical perspective. He begins by
exploring the link between global environmental change and public health and
concludes that global warming poses a serious potential threat to human
health. Professor Jamieson then questions why the potential health effects of
climate change have received so much attention when the other ramifications
of climate change have been left unaddressed He argues that the combination
of several factors has brought the issue of potential health effects to the
forefront of the climate change debate. One such factor …

The Struggle Over Parcel C: How Boston’S Chinatown Won A Victory In The Fight Against Institutional Expansionism And Environmental Racism, Andrew Leong
Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
For the last fifty years, Boston’s Chinatown has been a shrinking community. Squeezed in by highways on two sides, its land is being gradually consumed by two medical institutions, Tufts University Medical School and New England Medical Center. During the last few decades, these two medical institutions have swallowed up nearly one third of the land in Boston’s Chinatown. Despite this, both medical institutions want more. In its latest attempt at institutional expansion, New England Medical Center made an offer to the City of Boston in early 1993 to acquire a small plot of land in Chinatown called Parcel C, …

The Epa's Proposed Phase-Iii Expansion Of The Toxic Release Inventory (Tri) Reporting Requirements: Everything And The Kitchen Sink, Barbara Ann Clay
Pace Environmental Law Review
This Comment examines the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) proposed expansion of the Toxic Release Inventory (TRl) reporting requirements under section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) of 1986. The TRI program allows the EPA to provide public information pertaining to the release of chemicals by certain industrial facilities into the environment. In October of 1996, the EPA published its intention to expand reporting requirements, including the collection of material accounting (MA) data elements. MA data tracks the lifecycle of chemicals from raw materials to end product; therefore, industry officials oppose MA reporting as unjustifiably extensive. Environmental …

Living Responsibly : A Study Of Sustainable Living In East Tennessee And The Southern Appalachian Bioregion, Jonathan Matthew Scherch
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined the ways in which people living and working within East Tennessee and the Southern Appalachian bioregion attempt to do so more sustainably, and by extension, responsibly. A total of 94 subjects participated in guided interviews (N=76), with some interviews having multiple participants. The interviews examined the range of sustainable living practices which were being learned, developed, and practiced; the subjects’ personal pathways to their practices and world views, as distinct from the social mainstream; and the subjects’ demographic characteristics. Results from data analysis drawn from subject responses to both open- and closed-ended questions indicate the following: (a) …
Community Based Risk Perceptions : Competing Frames At Love Canal, New York, Erin Elizabeth Robinson
Community Based Risk Perceptions : Competing Frames At Love Canal, New York, Erin Elizabeth Robinson
Masters Theses
This study focuses on community based risk perceptions in an infamous community: Love Canal, New York. From the onset of the problems at Love Canal, residents were given different interpretations of the risks they faced. The problems at Love Canal were socially constructed. Competing definitions of disaster support the argument that although a physical problem exists, interest groups will compete over definitions to validate their claims of what the problem is and what actions should be taken. Competing frames then emerge to represent a version of reality most suitable to the groups' interests.
This study focuses on analysis of competing …
