Gender, Ethnicity And Space: The Case Of Racial Ethnic Minority Women Telecommuters In Omaha, Ne, Hope Kawabata Dec 1997

Gender, Ethnicity And Space: The Case Of Racial Ethnic Minority Women Telecommuters In Omaha, Ne, Hope Kawabata

Student Work

Telecommuting is a labor process in which employees work from home on a regular basis, but maintain contact with the office through telecommunications technology such as computer networks, facsimile machines, voice messaging systems, and so on. Telecommuting has become very popular in recent years; however, little is known about its social and spatial impacts. Preliminary research on gender and telecommuting has shown that telecommuting tends to reinforce a traditional division of domestic labor and identification of women with the home; however, whether this is the case for ethnic minority women is unknown. This thesis research used in-depth, semistructured interviews to …

Assessment Of Aggression In Children: The Use Of Human Figure Drawings, Jennifer Underwood

Theses

The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of six characteristics of drawings cited in the literature as indicators of aggression. The study was designed to compare the drawings of students to their rated behavior on the Aggression sub-scale of the Child Behavior Checklist-Youth Self Report form. It was hypothesized, based upon past research, that students who rated their behavior as aggressive would demonstrate a significant number of the aggressive characteristics in their drawings. One-hundred seventy, eighth grade students participated in this study by completing the checklist and drawing a person. The results obtained did not support the …

Re-Examination Of The Application Of Cognitive Developmental Theory To The Study Of Ethics And Socialization In The Accounting Profession, Stephen Bruce Scofield Jul 1997

Re-Examination Of The Application Of Cognitive Developmental Theory To The Study Of Ethics And Socialization In The Accounting Profession, Stephen Bruce Scofield

Doctoral Dissertations

Concern over the ethical behavior of accountants in public practice is legitimate. Willful misrepresentation of accounting information undermines the effective operation of economic institutions and social systems that rely on financial information. Such concern, fueled by salient instances of accounting failures, has prompted investigation by the federal government and research by both accounting institutions and researchers in academe.

One of the most critical claims coming out of these inquiries is that the accounting profession is controlled by a self perpetuating culture that too readily identifies with the interests of clients, as opposed to the needs of financial information users. Anecdotal …

The analysis of demographic information yielded gender as a significant …

Acculturation And Response Style On Mexican Americans On The Millon Index Of Personality Styles, Alicia Stephens Guffey May 1997

Acculturation And Response Style On Mexican Americans On The Millon Index Of Personality Styles, Alicia Stephens Guffey

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This research investigated response style differences between highly acculturated and low acculturated Mexican-Americans on the Negative Impression (NI) and Positive Impression (PI) Scales of the Millon Index of Personality Styles (Millon, 1994). The MIPS is a questionnaire designed to measure personality styles of normally functioning adults. Research has suggested that culturally distinct response styles are common in less acculturated Mexican-Americans. If present, these culturally distinct styles could be misinterpreted and have a negative or harmful impact on the assessment of Mexican-Americans. Analyses of covariance on data from two culturally distinct groups of Mexican-American college students, with age, gender, educational level, …

Screening Measures For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Heather Foley Apr 1997

Screening Measures For Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Heather Foley

Theses

While performance-based measures have not typically been used by school psychologists in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessment, a growing body of evidence suggests that neuropsychological measures may provide valuable diagnostic information as part of a comprehensive evaluation of the disorder. The utility of two neuropsychological measures for use as screening measures in assessing ADHD was examined in the present study. The performance of 29 children with ADHD was compared with that of 96 controls on alternate forms of Trails B and a Figure Cancellation Task. Although a developmental trend was found suggesting increased performance with age, time to complete …

Educating Adolescents With Emotional And Behavior Disabilities: A Bottom-Up Approach, Aimee Darmer Feb 1997

Educating Adolescents With Emotional And Behavior Disabilities: A Bottom-Up Approach, Aimee Darmer

Theses

This study presents a review of the literature describing the characteristics of students with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities (SED). Studies examining the best educational practices for this population of students are also reviewed and discussed. The author concludes that the best educational programs for students with SED contain an emphasis on personal responsibility and academic success within a day treatment setting. To test this hypothesis, the author examined one such program, the Avalon School of Rochester, New York, which exhibits many of the features correlated in the literature with student success. This study concludes that, given the choice to …

Development And Implementation Of The Body Logic Program For Adolescents: A Primary Prevention Program For Eating Disorders., Paula Jonniece Varnado

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eating disorder symptoms such as feelings of fatness, restrictive eating and purgative behaviors are observed in many children and adolescents. These feelings and behaviors, may, in some adolescents lead to the development of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A recent series of studies has identified risk factors for the development of eating disorder behaviors in children and adolescents. These risk factors include overconcern with physical appearance, negative evaluation of physical appearance, social pressure for thinness, higher weight level, depression, and body dysphoria. It has been hypothesized that targeting adolescents who are at risk for developing an eating disorder may result …

Relationship Of Self-Injurious Behavior And Aggression To Social Skills In Persons With Severe And Profound Mental Retardation., Dee Duncan Jan 1997

Relationship Of Self-Injurious Behavior And Aggression To Social Skills In Persons With Severe And Profound Mental Retardation., Dee Duncan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the literature, self-injurious behavior and aggression are often lumped together collectively as maladaptive behaviors. This study examined the social skills characteristics between persons with self-injurious behavior, aggression and a control group using the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills in Persons with Severe and Profound Retardation (MESSIER). Persons engaging in self-injurious behavior were significantly different from persons engaging in aggression as well as from the control group on five of the six subscales. The self-injury group had lower scores on subscales measuring positive behaviors and higher scores on subscales measuring negative behaviors. As expected for persons engaging in aggression, scores …

The Multidimensionality Of Illusory Judgments: Reexamination Of Illusion Of Control Research, Paul Keith Presson Jan 1997

The Multidimensionality Of Illusory Judgments: Reexamination Of Illusion Of Control Research, Paul Keith Presson

Doctoral Dissertations

The present dissertation examines the well-established research paradigm known as the illusion of control. Until now, researchers have employed one basic paradigm which has addressed the illusion of control as a unidimensional phenomenon. In Study 1, 91 female undergraduates were presented with three induction conditions used by previous researchers. Factor analyses showed that judgments from these tasks did not tap into a single process, but rather fell into two types of illusory judgments--belief- and contingency-based. In Study 2, 182 female undergraduates were exposed to the same three induction conditions used in Study 1 plus two additional contingency tasks. As in …

Psychosocial And Sociostructural Determinants Of Mastery: The Context Of Age And Disability, Scott David Schieman Jan 1997

Psychosocial And Sociostructural Determinants Of Mastery: The Context Of Age And Disability, Scott David Schieman

Doctoral Dissertations

The "active" and "potent" self has held a special interest to philosophers, psychologists, and sociologists since the inception of those disciplines. The present research uses sociological perspectives on social comparison and reference group theory to provide a framework for understanding the various dimensions of self-process in the context of age and disability. Specifically, this research examines associations between age, disability, and social status indicators as they impress upon personal agency or mastery.

This study uses secondary data that includes respondents aged 18 and over who resided in any of ten counties in Southwestern Ontario and were part of a two-wave …

Parallels Between Adolescent-Mother And Adolescent-Best Friend Interactions, Katherine A. Black Jan 1997

Parallels Between Adolescent-Mother And Adolescent-Best Friend Interactions, Katherine A. Black

Doctoral Dissertations

Forty-two adolescents (13-18 years) along with their mothers and best friends participated in this study. Adolescents participated in videotaped interaction tasks with their mothers and with their best friends, in which unresolved problems between the respective dyads were discussed. Attachment, self-esteem, personality, emotional expressiveness, friendship, and mood were assessed with questionnaires. There were four main findings in this study. First, there were positive associations between adolescents' behavior with their mothers and adolescents' behavior with their best friends. There were also positive associations between mothers' behavior with adolescents and adolescents' behavior with best friends. These associations were sometimes mediated by adolescents' …

Relativistic Thinking And Identity Development In College Students, Rebecca Anne Regeth Jan 1997

Relativistic Thinking And Identity Development In College Students, Rebecca Anne Regeth

Doctoral Dissertations

The relationship between relativistic thinking and identity formation was examined. Relativistic thinking is the ability to accept the subjective nature of knowledge and values and has been shown to develop during college. It was predicted that as students become more relativistic in their thinking, they also realize that their own perception of reality is relative too. This causes an identity crisis, resulting in a mature identity. A one-year longitudinal study showed that changes in identity (increased moratorium) were related to changes in thinking (increased relativism). Students in different college majors were shown to think differently about the nature of knowledge …

Understanding, Knowing, And Telling Transgender Identities., Darryl B. Hill Jan 1997

Understanding, Knowing, And Telling Transgender Identities., Darryl B. Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous psychological research has pathologized transgendered people. Reconceptualizing gender from a postmodern perspective and theory and research from within the transgender community leads to a very different view of gender and transgender identities. However, the transgender community's thoughts on this reconstruction of gender has been mostly unexplored. Therefore, I engaged 17 male-born and one female-born members of southwestern Ontario's transgender community in a dialogue. We spoke about how they understand gender, came to know their transgenderness, and tell the story of their gender. Then, I analyzed the interviews using a four part coding strategy focused on direct responses to specific …

An Integration Of Biographical Data And Personality Research Through Sherwood Forest Empiricism: Robbing From Personality To Give To Biodata., Bruce W. Davis Jan 1997

An Integration Of Biographical Data And Personality Research Through Sherwood Forest Empiricism: Robbing From Personality To Give To Biodata., Bruce W. Davis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Archival data was used to assess the effectiveness of incorporating biodata scoring into extant personality measures. Personality and biodata theories were briefly reviewed and several commonalities were noted. Hypotheses were developed for Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Agreeableness, and Openness to Experience. The first three dimensions were expected to predict absenteeism and all four were expected to predict turnover, and empirical scoring was expected to increase predictive validity. Data were collected from three samples (school bus drivers, bus drivers, and law enforcement) and three different personality measures were scored using England's (1971) vertical percent method. Results showed that two of the three …

Differences On Measures Of Distress Between Clients Who Continue In Psychotherapy, Drop Out Prior To Intake, And Drop Out Following Intake., Craig A. Healey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study compared clients who continued in therapy with clients who dropped out before the intake and with those who quit immediately after intake. Differences between groups were examined on the following variables: age at application, length of delay before intake interview, client gender, year in university, scores from the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Post-Session Client Report (a self-report measure of client perceptions of both therapist and intake session). Participants were 855 university students who requested psychological services at a university counselling center between 1993 and 1997. Test scores were more useful than either …

Individual Differences In Psychological Adjustment To Perceived Abnormalities Of Appearance, Timothy Peter Moss Jan 1997

Individual Differences In Psychological Adjustment To Perceived Abnormalities Of Appearance, Timothy Peter Moss

School of Psychology Theses

The aim of this programme of research was to investigate the differences between individuals in their psychological adjustment to perceived abnormalities of appearance. The first phase of the research was to refine and validate a measure of distress and dysfunction associated with having an appearance which is different from normal. Over 500 patients in plastic reconstructive surgery units were recruited as participants in a nationwide multi-centre trial. The resulting measure, the Derriford Appearance Scale 24r was shown to have good psychometric properties, and was used as a criterion measure of adjustment. A series of clinical interviews were conducted with contrasting …

An Integrated Model Predicting Smoking Stage Of Change Among A Sample Of Government-Insured And Indigent Medical Patients., Edwin Daniel Boudreaux Jan 1997

An Integrated Model Predicting Smoking Stage Of Change Among A Sample Of Government-Insured And Indigent Medical Patients., Edwin Daniel Boudreaux

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study found that an integrated model using variables from several psychosocial theories, including the theory of planned behavior, decisional balance theory, and self-efficacy theory, was successful in predicting smoking stage of change. Specifically, ever smokers with higher self-efficacy, higher ratings of the cons of smoking, and lower ratings of the pros were more ready to quit or had already quit. Additionally, those who rated smoking as less tempting and who reported having people in their support system who were supportive of their cessation were in later stages of change. These results point to the importance of assessing cognitions towards …

The Screen For Adolescent Violence Exposure (Save): Development And Validation., Teresa L. Hastings Jan 1997

The Screen For Adolescent Violence Exposure (Save): Development And Validation., Teresa L. Hastings

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Increased interest in how violence exposure might relate to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other adolescent psychopathology has created considerable demand for an assessment tool to assist in this research effort. Though attempts have been made to improve the measurement standards for violence research on youth, available instruments lack adequate psychometric qualities, comprehensiveness, or an acceptable format for slow readers. The present study provided empirical evidence on the utility of the Screen for Adolescent Violence Exposure (SAVE), an instrument designed to both correct the deficiencies of previous measures and to assess violence exposure for school, home, and neighborhood settings. The …

Predictors Of Postconcussion Symptomatology In A Mild Head Injury College Population., Laurie M. Ryan Jan 1997

Predictors Of Postconcussion Symptomatology In A Mild Head Injury College Population., Laurie M. Ryan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mild head injury is the most common form of head injury and the majority of individuals who sustain such injuries are young adults. Following mild head injury, individuals often complain of a number of physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms referred to as postconcussion symptoms (PCS). The most commonly reported postconcussion symptoms are headache, dizziness, decreased concentration, memory problems, irritability, fatigue, visual disturbances, sensitivity to noise, judgement problems, and anxiety. These symptoms can persist from months to years following injury and may even be permanent and cause disability (Brown, Fann, & Grant, 1994; Gouvier, Cubic, Jones, Brantley, and Cutlip, 1992). Both …
