Aviation English: An Introduction, Peter H. Ragan Dec 1996

Aviation English: An Introduction, Peter H. Ragan

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Aviation is a specialized, technology-based area that covers a broad range of activities, from esoteric analyses of compressible fluids, to selling tickets, to getting a clearance for takeoff. Accordingly, the language behavior inherent to such activities is diverse, often requiring specialized uses of English that are collectively labeled here as Aviation English. Aviation English figures prominently in most fields of aviation/aerospace education and practice, in regulatory and administrative agencies concerned with national and international commerce, norms and standards, and in academic, industrial, and government research and development. A greater awareness of the nature of Aviation English and of relevant resources …

Immunocytochemistry By Electron Spectroscopic Imaging Using Well Defined Boronated Monovalent Antibody Fragments, M. M. Kessels, B. Qualmann, W. D. Sierralta

Scanning Microscopy

Contributing to the rapidly developing field of immunoelectron microscopy a new kind of markers has been created. The element boron, incorporated as very stable carborane clusters into different kinds of peptides, served as a marker detectable by electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI) - an electron microscopic technique with high-resolution potential.

Covalently linked immunoreagents conspicuous by the small size of both antigen recognizing part and marker moiety are accessible by using peptide concepts for label construction and their conjugation with Fab' fragments. Due to a specific labeling of the free thiol groups of the Fab' fragments, the antigen binding capacity was not …

Persuasion Theories In The Practice Of Public Relations In The 1990'S, Susan E. Owens Dec 1996

Persuasion Theories In The Practice Of Public Relations In The 1990'S, Susan E. Owens

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to present ways in which persuasion theories are currently used in public relations and how persuasion theories could be used in public relations. Some public relations textbooks devote a chapter or section to persuasion theories and how they relate to public relations. The public relations practitioner needed a publication that expanded on these theories and provided cases of how they are used in public relations today.

To research persuasion theories and current application of them, current textbooks and periodicals were reviewed at several libraries. The searches at Rowan College, Richard Stockton College and Ocean …

Attitudes and consciousness about Africa are much shaped by the borders between its nations, peoples and other resources. Thus, the history of the cartography of Africa informs us not only about the continent's past, but much of what constitutes its present and, perhaps, its future.

Thinking And Learning Through Creative Movement In The Classroom, Katherine M. Nauman-Borton Dec 1996

Thinking And Learning Through Creative Movement In The Classroom, Katherine M. Nauman-Borton

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In the past decade, the American school system has come under scrutiny. American children are scoring lower than children from other countries on standardized tests. What can be done to ensure that American students are able to compete in the technological world of today? Many educators believe that in order for children to fulfill their potential, they must be given more than information and knowledge. They must be taught how to think, how to use the knowledge they learn in school. Researchers such as Robert H. Ennis (1987, 1993) and Matthew Lipman (1995) believe thinking must be advanced in the …

A Note On Distributions Of True Versus Fabricated Data, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

New empirical evidence and statistical derivations of Benford’s Law have led to successful goodness-of fit tests to detect fraud in accounting data. Several recent case studies support the hypothesis that fabricated data does not conform to expected true digital frequencies.

Illustrations, Text, And The Child Reader: What Are Pictures In Children's Storybooks For?, Zhihui Fang Dec 1996

Illustrations, Text, And The Child Reader: What Are Pictures In Children's Storybooks For?, Zhihui Fang

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Picture books are profusely illustrated books in which the illustrations are, to varying degrees, essential to the en joyment and understanding of the story (Tomlinson and Lynch-Brown, 1996). As the most characteristic form of children's literature (Nodelman, 1996), picture books hold a prominent place in children's literature because of the juxtaposition of pictures and words. Thanks to the public's acute awareness of the importance of childhood in human devel opment, to professional critical evaluation of children's literature, as well as to the advances in printing technology and art reproduction, children's literature has witnessed a dramatic increase in well-illustrated picture books.

Case Study Analysis In Reding/Language Arts: Getting To The "Nitty-Gritty", Janet H. Towell

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

On the first day of class in a graduate reading assessment and evaluation course, my students were asked to formulate a list of questions in cooperative groups that should be considered when doing a case study on a student to assess his or her skills and abilities including strengths and needs in read ing/language arts. They were asked to think of any areas of concern that may affect the student's academic performance such as social or emotional factors. The following table of 20 questions was compiled by this group of 16 inservice teachers with varying levels of experience and expertise. …
