Microbial And Molecular Basis Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Biodegradation In Contaminated Soils, Yeonghee Ahn
Microbial And Molecular Basis Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Biodegradation In Contaminated Soils, Yeonghee Ahn
Doctoral Dissertations
Studies were undertaken to investigate the microbial and molecular basis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) biodegradation in contaminated soils. A culture collection of bacteria isolated from PAH-contaminated soils was characterized genotypically and phenotypically. The collection consisted of 141 putative PAH-degraders originally isolated using the PAH spray plate and the naphthalene vapor plate methods. The characterizations were designed to analyze genotypes and phenotypes of PAH-degraders, to screen HMW (high molecular weight) PAH degraders as sources for understanding of HMW PAH degradation, and to screen nonNAH7-hybridizing PAH- degraders as sources for the future development of new gene probes. The methods used to …

The Attitudes Of Chinese Students At The University Of Tennessee Toward The Computer, Gonghua Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
As computer literacy and computer use become more and more important in the educational environment, the attitudes of international students toward computers may play an important role in their academic success in this country. The study investigated the attitudes of Chinese students at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville toward computers and explored the possible effects of gender, age and computer experience on these students’ attitudes toward computers.
The primary instrument used in the study was Drs. Loyd and Gressard’s Computer Attitude Scale. The scoring strategy results in higher scores on the computer anxiety subscale corresponding to lower anxiety, and higher …

Framing Analysis, News Values And Newspaper Coverage Of The North American Free Trade Agreement, Robert Curtis Hayes
Framing Analysis, News Values And Newspaper Coverage Of The North American Free Trade Agreement, Robert Curtis Hayes
Masters Theses
The relationship between framing analysis research, news values and the North American Free Trade Agreement are examined through a content analysis method of research. The analysis is designed to explore the ways news frames develop and become manifest within newspaper texts. The news value of proximity was introduced to the study by considering the geographic location of the nine North American border city newspapers that contribute to the sample of 400 articles. To test the frames, the ratification of NAFTA by the U.S. House of Representatives is the focal point for the sample of 400 articles. The articles were coded …

Implications Of A Feminist Narratology: Temporality, Focalization And Voice In The Films Of Julie Dash, Mona Smith And Trinh T. Minh-Ha, Jennifer Alyce Machiorlatti
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation conducts feminist narrative textual analysis of films by three independent women film-makers-of- color: Julie Dash, Mona Smith and Trinh T. Minh-ha. The research utilizes traditional cinematic narratological methods combined with a feminist perspective. Narratology is the structural/textual study of narrative organization, style and content. Feminism is a theoretical body of inquiry which lends implications of gender difference, power relationships, cinematic stereotypes, and cultural significance to textual analysis. Feminist inquiry contributes a social, cultural, ideological and historical perspective to the taxomony of a structuralist narrative methodology. By combining this contextual perspective with a topological textual method, I propose consideration …
