Competing Conceptions Of Risk, Paul B. Thompson, Wesley Dean Sep 1996

Competing Conceptions Of Risk, Paul B. Thompson, Wesley Dean

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Recent literature is said to reflect growing acknowledgment of multiple conceptions of risk but often to obscure an important distinction. Building on work of Kristin Shrader-Frechette, the authors explore the potential for debate over competing philosophical conceptions of risk.

Risk Criteria For Approving Or Rejecting Field Tests Of High-Performance Weapons, Shaul Feller, Michael Maharik

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Because details are classified and participation by affected populations is limited, military test ranges impose difficult challenges on those responsible for their safety. Here, the authors catalog some of those challenges and suggest ways to address them.

Changing Practices In The Assessment Of Writing A Discipline Redefining Itself, Marie E. Schleiff Jun 1996

Changing Practices In The Assessment Of Writing A Discipline Redefining Itself, Marie E. Schleiff

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This thesis concerns how changes in the assessment of writing mirror the historical changes in the purposes and methodologies in education. We have witnessed a dramatic shift from the viewing and testing of writing as a series of sub-skills, with emphasis on error-avoidance and correctness of form, to viewing both the process of writing and its assessment as a means of discovery, reflection, and learning. New practices in the evaluation of writing reflect knowledge of how writing occurs and how it is taught. Results of a survey conducted over two years show high school students' responses to traditional and new …

Creating Effective Learning Environments In Print: A Guide For Lecturers And Designers Of Independent Study Materials, Jan Herrington

Research outputs pre 2011

This book is about providing the assistance that you need to create effective printed learning materials. It focuses on the needs of the writer of a distance unit, but the principles apply equally to any self-directed study materials. The book has been developed to assist you with the preparation of your study materials, and to describe some of the many support services available to you.

It also provides guidelines on non-discriminatory writing and a useful editorial style, sometimes described as a 'house style'. Above all, Creating Effective Learning Environments in Print will help to ensure that documents you produce are …

Honouring Young Children: Research, Curriculum And Practice In Early Childhood Education, Loraine Corrie (Ed.) Jan 1996

Honouring Young Children: Research, Curriculum And Practice In Early Childhood Education, Loraine Corrie (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Early childhood educators tend to be people who like to agree with their colleagues. Often we avoid conflict situations and keep the peace by being silent, rather than raising our voices in dissent. But rapid changes to the field, coupled with the explosion of knowledge in the 90s, have opened up new dilemmas and new challenges for teachers. If we are to meet these challenges in a way that honours young children, then we need to talk about our differences and diverse views in a spirit of trust and professional collegiality.

The Second Edith Cowan Memorial Conference on Early Childhood …

Geological And Land Instability Mapping Using A Gis Package As A Building Block For The Development Of A Risk Assessment Procedure, R N. Chowdhury, P N. Flentje Jan 1996

Geological And Land Instability Mapping Using A Gis Package As A Building Block For The Development Of A Risk Assessment Procedure, R N. Chowdhury, P N. Flentje

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A modern land instability risk assessment procedure must include an accurate geological framework and land instability database. Geological and land instability mapping of the northern suburbs of the City of Wollongong represents a considerable challenge and is to be achieved using computer generated 1:4000 topographic base maps. Using an integrated series of techniques, including computer modelling of the escarpment geology and field mapping techniques, a new series of geological maps has been produced. Meanwhile an exhaustive land instability database of the region has been compiled. A flexible approach to mapping and data compilation is very useful and confirms the viability …

Assessment And Treatment Of Domestic Violence In A Substance Abuse Setting, Carlo Defazio Jan 1996

Assessment And Treatment Of Domestic Violence In A Substance Abuse Setting, Carlo Defazio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Domestic violence and substance abuse have come to the forefront of the public's awareness in the last decade. This document focuses on the simultaneous occurrence of these phenomena and proposes that providers reconcile any possible differences in treatment and collaborate, if not integrate services. Providers must move beyond their respective theoretical approaches and form a new transtheoretical delivery approach to treatment in order to provide the best possible outcomes for clients. Additionally, while the document assumes that substance abuse programs are offering appropriate assessment and treatment to their clients, it seeks to further heighten their awareness to issues concerning domestic …

A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Model For Diagnostic Windfield Assessment, Zijiang Shi Jan 1996

A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Model For Diagnostic Windfield Assessment, Zijiang Shi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A 3-dimensional model that calculates windfields over irregular terrain based on meteorological tower data has been developed. The governing equations of atmospheric motion, the finite element method and atmospheric boundary layer concept have been introduced. A surface model of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) has been generated from DEM files which contain elevation data, and a 3-D mesh has been generated. Initial estimates of the velocity field are developed by interpolating surface and upper level wind measurements. A diagnostic objective analysis technique is used to generate 3-D winds above the surface layer. This algorithm incorporates NTS tower field measurements to …

Wildlife Damage Management (Wdm) In The Northern Utah Adc District, United States Department Of Agriculture, Animal And Plant Health Inspection Service, Animal Damage Control

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Across the United States, wildlife habitat has been substantially changed as human populations expand and land is used for human needs. These human uses and needs often compete with wildlife which increases the potential for conflicting human/wildlife interactions. In addition, segments of the public strive for protection for all wildlife; this protection can create localized conflicts between human and wildlife activities.

A Needs Assessment For The Convention And Meeting Planning Industry, Beth Robyn Appelbaum Jan 1996

A Needs Assessment For The Convention And Meeting Planning Industry, Beth Robyn Appelbaum

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Meeting and convention planning is increasingly becoming integral to the hospitality industry. Indeed, such planning touches almost every facet of hospitality, travel and tourism services. Only in the past twenty years has this function become recognized as a profession. A knowledge of lodging, food and beverage, and the broader aspects of tourism will enhance the meeting planner's effectiveness, but beyond this what are the nuances of the dynamics of such planning?;Meeting and convention planning courses are being offered on an increasing basis within hospitality education programs. The question is, are the combinations of such courses providing the competencies in order …
