Andrew Carnegie: Scottish Immigrant, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, Sam Gould
University of Dayton Review
Andrew Carnegie was born November 25, 1835, in Dunfermline, Scotland, fourteen miles north of Edinburgh, into the family of a poor weaver. His father, a man of deep feeling and community spirit, was experiencing displacement and discouragement because the steam driven looms of the industrial age were making his craft obsolete. At the age of 13, Andy, his mother, father, and brother Tom immigrated to the United States and settled in Pittsburgh. On August 11, 1919, at the age of eighty-three, Andrew Carnegie died, leaving an estate of $30 million. This is a substantial amount of money for anyone to …

"Blessings Left Behind" : Self And Social Obligation In The Novels Of Elizabeth Gaskell, Eileen D. Abel
"Blessings Left Behind" : Self And Social Obligation In The Novels Of Elizabeth Gaskell, Eileen D. Abel
Doctoral Dissertations
Far from supporting the domestic ideology of the Nineteenth Century as many writers contend, Elizabeth Gaskell's five major novels–Mary Barton, Ruth, North and South, Sylvia's Lovers and Wives and Daughters--reflect her overriding idea that the individual could effect social change only through the achievement of moral integrity. Gaskell believes that the primary responsibility of an adult participant of community life is moral awareness, and in these five novels Gaskell creates a sort of moral mythology, or stories by which women could guide their lives. Gaskell's heroines influence their specific communities by learning the supposed "feminine" virtues of love, mercy and …

In 1835 an antislavery sympathizer leaving a lecture by Theodore Dwight Weld went home to dream that she was transported above the world; looking down at the United States, she saw "multitudes of sable figures, bending beneath a scorching sun -- their backs lacerated by the whip -- scourged, maimed, loaded with irons -- subject to every insult -- and exposed to every gust of unbridled passions." The dreamer, a Mrs. Sturges, drew from many discourses in describing her lengthy dream, but the fundamental trope of her visionary narrative was the story of the suffering slave, a trope that in …

Effacing The Blots From Their Otherwise Fair Escutcheon : Problems Of Public Health In Leicester 1849-1891, Scott Edward Roney
Effacing The Blots From Their Otherwise Fair Escutcheon : Problems Of Public Health In Leicester 1849-1891, Scott Edward Roney
Masters Theses
This study concerns two public health problems in Victorian Leicester: sewerage and 'summer diarrhoea.' The problems are considered to have been constructed socially as well as materially. While neither problem was unique to Leicester, there were circumstances which made the town's responses to the problems unique. The methodological lens for the study is a quasi-Kuhnian conceptualization called an 'accepted remedy.’ It is posited that the existence or absence of a consensually-held accepted remedy for a specific public health problem was a significant factor in determining how a community would respond to the problem and how successful such a response might …
