A New Concept Of "History": A Dialogue Between Reinhart Koselleck And Chela Sandoval, Ruth E. Bryan
A New Concept Of "History": A Dialogue Between Reinhart Koselleck And Chela Sandoval, Ruth E. Bryan
Ruth E. Bryan
This paper explore the meaning and conception of “history” as used by Chela Sandoval in her article “U.S. Third World Feminism: The Theory and Method of Oppositional Consciousness in the Postmodern World” (1991) and Reinhart Koselleck in his book of essays, Futures Past (1985). For both writers, "history” is based in the relationship of past experience to future expectations. However, for Koselleck, “history” contains the expectation of positive progress. Thus, in his conception, all people have the same general experience (a conception of the past), therefore we all conceptualize history in the same way, therefore we are all equally happy …

The Relationship Between The Classification Of Dementia And Social Policy And Consequent Delivery Of Services, Brigitte Pennington
The Relationship Between The Classification Of Dementia And Social Policy And Consequent Delivery Of Services, Brigitte Pennington
Theses & Honors Papers
The American population is getting older, and with the aging of the population the prevalence of chronic illnesses will increase. Current social policies that are intended to assist elderly persons and their families in case of illness are no longer sufficient to meet that need, and will decline further as the number of older persons increases. This is especially true for patients who have developed dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, because dementias are still considered that "peculiar disease of the cerebral cortex" described by Alois Alzheimer in 1907 that seems not to fit any current classification. This study was designed to …

An Investigation Into Attitudes Surrounding Facilitated Communication, Jessica N. Peregoy
Theses & Honors Papers
This qualitative study investigated facilitators' opinions regarding facilitated communication (FC). Six individuals who have experience and/or training in the use of this method were interviewed. Issues discussed included FC's effectiveness for individuals other than those with autism, training prior to using the method, need for modifications in the method, and validity of the communication arising from the use of FC. Recurring themes were constructed from comments made during the course of the interviews. Each theme was supported by comments made by at least half of the facilitators. These themes were dissatisfaction with formal training, application to other populations, acknowledgement of …

Restriction Or Resistance? French Colonial Educational Development In Cambodia, Thomas Clayton
Restriction Or Resistance? French Colonial Educational Development In Cambodia, Thomas Clayton
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
By 1944, after eight decades of French colonial control, only a small percentage of eligible students in Cambodia attended French schools. Several scholars argue on the basis of such evidence that the French purposefully restricted education for Cambodians in order first to achieve and then to maintain power in the colony. This article examines educational development in Cambodia during the French colonial period and concludes that the lack of Cambodian educational participation stemmed from Cambodian resistance, rather than French planning. French educational reforms sought to understand Cambodian resistance, to overcome it, and to draw Cambodians into schools dedicated to the …

An Examination Of The Theoretical And Philosophical Foundations Of Reflective Thinking And Practice, Jerry D. Johnson
An Examination Of The Theoretical And Philosophical Foundations Of Reflective Thinking And Practice, Jerry D. Johnson
Masters Theses
The recent revival, especially in education, of a widespread interest in reflective thinking, has made the understanding of its theoretical and philosophical foundations of great importance. A corresponding practical application of reflective thinking, with an aspiration of achieving improvement in practice, has enunciated another aspect of the traditional connection of mind to matter. The clarification of the meaning of reflective thinking and practice involves an interdisciplinary consideration of the conceptual basis of its origins. By showing areas of agreement or apparent consensus among theorists and philosophers, some uniformity, consistency, and coherence in meaning begins to emerge. A comparison and cros-sreferencing …
