Student Satisfaction With A Community College's Counseling Services: Gender And Race Differences, Carla Denise Noto
Student Satisfaction With A Community College's Counseling Services: Gender And Race Differences, Carla Denise Noto
Theses
Forty-five community college students (8 males and 37 females) were surveyed to determine their level of satisfaction with counseling services offered at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley. The three areas of counseling explored were academic counseling, career counseling, and personal counseling. Results indicated that neither the gender of the student n or the ethnic group the student belonged to related to the level of satisfaction he/she received from any of the three areas of counseling. Academic counseling was found to have the highest satisfaction rankings and Personal counseling was found to have the lowest. ii
The Effect Of Gender And Age On Ppst Performance In An Urban Teacher Education Program, Judith Harrington
The Effect Of Gender And Age On Ppst Performance In An Urban Teacher Education Program, Judith Harrington
Counseling Faculty Publications
This study examined PPST scores for 318 College of Education students in a midsized, midwestern, urban university. Factors of gender and age were used to compare performance on the three PPST subtests of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Findings tended to support some gender-stereotypical beliefs with regard to math and verbal abilities. The study's findings did not support the often perceived belief that traditional students outperform nontraditional students. Inferences for urban colleges of Education are discussed.

Executive Summary: Information for this report was obtained from the Student Tracking System. Findings are intended to provide insight into various characteristics of the 2100 graduates who matriculated during the 1993-94 academic year. Generally, Western's 1994 graduates were mostly female (57.8% versus 42.2% male); mostly transfers (53.5% versus 42.1% natives, or students who began at Western as first-time fresh); and overwhelmingly current Washington residents (97.5%). Some 1994 graduates chose not to disclose their ethnicity (5.4%). Of the rest, the majority were Euro-Americans (85.4%). Ethnic-minorities made up 8.4% of 1994 graduates, up from 7.0% in 1993. Time-to-degree analysis for yearly cohorts …
Idealism And The Individual Woman: Reading Bessie Head's A Question Of Power, Paul J. Heald
Idealism And The Individual Woman: Reading Bessie Head's A Question Of Power, Paul J. Heald
Scholarly Works
In A Question of Power, South African exile Bessie Head graphically illustrates the relevance of gender difference to religion, political philosophy, and human rights. At first glance, the novel is a startling interior view of the psychosis that can result from constant alienation. The madness so painfully described, however, is portrayed as specific to women. And the road from madness -- the rejection of idealism, the rejection of universalism, and the rejection of power -- carries an important message to those seeking to understand the various feminist perspectives on human rights and spirituality. In Head's view, the recognition of …

We Can't Go On Together With Suspicious Minds: Judicial Bias And Racialized Perspective In R. V. R.D.S., Richard F. Devlin
Dalhousie Law Journal
In recent years it has been recognized that the Canadian judiciary has been drawn from only a relatively small cross section of the community, specifically privileged white males. As a result there have been calls for, and some action in pursuit of, appointment processes that are designed to diversify the bench in order to render it more inclusive. Gender and race are the two primary categories that are invoked as the benchmarks of diversity. While it would appear that numerically there seems to be some very modest progress towards the goal of achieving a more inclusive judiciary, significant qualitative, institutional …

Linda Jacobson Interview Virtual Reality Evangelist, Loretta L. Lange
SWITCH
In the interview with Linda Jacobson, a Virtual Reality (VR) artist, Jacobson discusses the current and future state of VR technology’s role in the politics of the body, social identity, self, gender, class, and race. This article discusses the fact that barriers to access exist for a more diverse set of artists across race, class, and gender to engage with VR technology and the need to evolve the development platform, so artists can implement their ideas in a low-cost way. The author discusses Jaron Lanier’s ideas about using VR to explore other identities based on a theatrical model where the …

Evaluation Of Leadership In Ontario Public Libraries, Reed Osborne
MPA Major Research Papers
This paper examines whether the leadership performance appraisal ratings of public library chief executive officers (CEOs) are influenced by the gender of the CEO. Surveys with 272 board members and management or professional staff at public libraries in Ontario were conducted to determine their evaluations of the CEO for 14 leadership qualities. The findings reveal that female CEOs carry an additional burden in the form of ongoing gender role tensions that male CEOs do not have to endure.

SWITCH
This interview with Brenda Laurel, Virtual Reality (VR) author and thinker, discusses the applications and challenges of VR. Creating an emphatic experience using VR technology is possible, but the challenge lies in designing an environment that models the senses to stimulate emotions. VR enables experiences of different genders, but physiological differences between the sexes exist and are important to understand. However, technology used to create the environment and simulation of physical objects in VR is only in the developmental stage. Laurel believes in the importance of keeping the mind grounded in the physical body, in order to strengthen the appreciation …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Race, Socioeconomic Status And Gender On Juvenile Justice Case Processing In A Southeastern C-Level Metropolitan Area, Melanie Wynell Smith
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management
The goal of this research was to evaluate intake, adjudication and disposition of juvenile court cases to determine the extent to which outcomes are influenced by the race, socioeconomic status and gender of the referred youth. Three causal models were developed which incorporated the hypothesized relationships in both consensus and conflict paradigms. Zero-order correlations and path analysis were employed for quantitative analysis. Additionally, court services unit personnel were surveyed to determine the extent to which quantitative results were reasonable and reflective of their experience in the court system under study.
Path analysis and qualitative survey results indicate that the effect …

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The individual and departmental factors affecting graduate students' professional socialization were studied by employing data from 309 PhD students in 16 graduate programs in sociology. Using Rosenbaum's tournament model of opportunity structures and aspects of Tinto's model of social psychological integration, this study examines students' access to initial funding, resources in the department, indicators of prior ability, current professional activities, mentoring processes, and social psychological factors for their effects on socialization into the academic profession. Access to initial funding and to mentoring have substantial effects on PhD students' professional socialization, but prove to be less than rational processes in the …

Effects Of Therapist Gender On Client Communications In Marital Therapy, Laurel C. Agee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to explore how therapist and client gender are associated with communication behaviors of males and females in marital therapy. The majority of research on therapist gender issues has been conducted with individual clients. Few data exist on the effects of therapist gender within marital therapy. This study examined the communication patterns of couples within a marital therapy setting and the influence of therapist gender on those patterns. Forty-six 10-minute videotape segments of marital therapy were coded for communication patterns. Coded verbal statement categories included the verbal behaviors of agreement, supportive, solution of problems, and …

The Effects Of Therapist Gender On Group Therapy For Eating-Disordered Clients, Todd A. Soutor
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This present study examined the session-by-session content of group therapy for eating-disordered clients. The main objective of this study was to identify how therapist-client gender match affects group therapy process , regarding the disclosure of important issues relevant to eating-disordered clients. It was hypothesized that the group therapy process for eating-disordered clients would be qualitatively different if therapy was facilitated by a female as opposed to a male therapist. The evaluation of the research question required using an alternating treatments single-subject research design, in which the presentation of treatment conditions was counterbalanced across two therapy groups. The treatments consisted of …

Gender And Depression: Analysis Of The Effects Of Sex Roles, Sex-Role Self-Discrepancy, And Attributional Style, Scott V. Cutler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of attributional style, sex roles, and sex-role self-discrepancy in the relationship between gender and depression. Epidemiological studies report a higher incidence of depression among women then men (approximately 2:1). Among the various theories suggested to explain this gender difference, sex roles, attributional style, and self-discrepancy have been conceived as possible explanations. The relationship between gender and depression may be better understood through examining the possible contribution of these three independent variables.
To examine these theories, a sample of 130 subjects was drawn from clients at the USU Counseling Center, the …

Fraternal studies are adjacent to gender studies -- fraternal societies have often been exclusively male or female, and research into such societies inevitably raises questions of gender. This review of Stern's landmark book sustains that position.

Although there has been increasing awareness regarding equity and access issues in the legal profession, that awareness has tended to miss the multi-faceted nature of the problem. The author discusses how the recognition of one kind of barrier may not assist in the recognition of others. Understanding race or gender does not necessarily imply understanding disability or sexual orientation. Students, faculty and practitioners need to challenge and question their assumptions, to guard against barriers to entry and to really belonging.

A Woman's Tragedy: Catherine Bernard's 'Brutus', Nina Ekstein
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
The theater has traditionally been a male domain. The ranks of authors, directors, and even actors have long been overwhelmingly dominated by men. In Western drama, no women playwrights have gained admittance to the literary canon. While never absolute, the relative exclusion of women from dramatic authorship is even greater when the type of theater in question is tragedy. Carol Gelderman asks bluntly: "Why is it that no woman has ever written a great tragedy?". A number of explanations have been put forward that suggest deep-seated links between men and tragedy: Susan Gilbert and Susan Gubar find that "the structure …

While much is known about female disadvantage in learning, less research has explored their advantages, or the advantages and disadvantages experienced by male students. It seems to be generally assumed that gender issues are exclusively female issues. This project sought to dispel this myth by gathering information about male students' perceptions and experiences, and comparing them with those of female students, to highlight perceptual differences and their implications for learning.

Entrepreneurial or self-employed women are a growing component of the workforce worldwide. Australian statistics reveal that women are establishing their own businesses (in particular in self-employment) at a approximately twice the rate of men. In 1991-92 more than one million (41 per cent) of the 2.6 million people working in small business were women. Less than one third of these were self-employed or employers, while women accounted for 46 per cent of small business employees (Employment and Skills Formation Council, 1994)...

The employment patterns of “nontraditional” workers in the United States show two conflicting characteristics. On the one hand, researchers have observed a continuing increase in the rate of participation of nontraditional workers at multiple levels in the work force. For example, the proportion of women white collar workers increased from twenty-two percent in the late 1960s to forty-six percent in 1992. Similarly, the average job tenure for nontraditional workers has also increased. For example, although males in the thirty-five to forty-four year old age group have experienced a small decline in job tenure, women in the same group have seen …

What does law tell us about our relations to material things? Property theorists maintain that there are no legal relations between persons and things. Things can be owned, transferred, bequeathed, assigned, repossessed, and so on, but such arrangements really describe relationships among different persons with regard to the object rather than relationships between persons and things.
Yet the quality or shape of the legal relations among persons often depends on the cultural meaning of the thing in question, a meaning (or meanings) that exists, in some form anyway, prior to or independent of, legal concepts traditionally attached to things such …

Where Are The Girls? Gender Differences In Secondary Science And Math Grades, Jeff Matthew Ommen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
To investigate gender differences in secondary science and math grades, I used a cumulative numerical grade, a method to reduce a single student's many grades into a single number. Subjects were 640 students, who graduated from two small, mid-west high schools from the years of 1986-1993. Gender differences in cumulative numerical grades were not continuously supported in single class tests, in single school tests, or combined school tests. There were instances gender differences in cumulative numerical grade were upheld, however. A definite interaction was evident between math and science cumulative numerical grades. The differences between male and female cumulative numerical …
