The Preschool Speech Intelligibility Measure, Sherrill R. Morris
The Preschool Speech Intelligibility Measure, Sherrill R. Morris
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
Documenting changes in speech intelligibility across time is an important but difficult task for speech-language pathologists. This study reports on the development and initial testing of the Preschool Speech Intelligibility Measure (PSIM), a single-word, multiple-choice intelligibility measure. The PSIM is adapted from the Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech (Yorkston & Beukelman, 1981) and is designed to plot changes in children’s speech intelligibility across time. This instrument is offered as an addition to the existing array of available speech intelligibility measures.
From Comparative Risk To Decision Analysis: Ranking Solutions To Multiple-Value Environmental Problems, John Kadvany
From Comparative Risk To Decision Analysis: Ranking Solutions To Multiple-Value Environmental Problems, John Kadvany
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
While recognizing that the making of environmental policy is sufficiently complex that no one method can serve all conditions, Dr. Kadvany urges that more attention be given to multiattribute utility and decision analysis. He suggests this can help, e.g., to illuminate stakeholder values and generate alternative approaches.
Retrospective On U.S. Health Risk Assessment: How Others Can Benefit, Dennis J. Paustenbach
Retrospective On U.S. Health Risk Assessment: How Others Can Benefit, Dennis J. Paustenbach
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Dr. Paustenbach reviews the scientific underpinnings of about twenty years of health risk assessment practice and their implications for environmental policy. He observes that more than 600 peer-reviewed papers provide a wealth of information that can save other countries billions of dollars. He also briefly reviews risk-assessment practices outside the U.S.
Present Risk, Future Risk Or No Risk - Measuring And Predicting Perceptions Of Health Risks Of A Hazardous Waste Landfill, William K. Hallman, Abraham H. Wandersman
Present Risk, Future Risk Or No Risk - Measuring And Predicting Perceptions Of Health Risks Of A Hazardous Waste Landfill, William K. Hallman, Abraham H. Wandersman
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Given that perceived risk is multidimensional, the authors seek better understanding by focusing on health risks and, more particularly, on their temporality. In this way, they attempt to measure more meaningfully psychological influences on risk perceptions.

Conjunctival Impression Cytology Assessment Of Vitamin A Status Of Migrant Children, Laura Nihan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Subclinical vitamin A deficiency was assessed in 65 Hispanic children attending four migrant Head Start programs in Utah. Subjects aged 2 to 6 years (median 3 years 10 months) were examined for evidence of vitamin A deficiency by conjunctival impression cytology. Biochemical indices for serum vitamin A, retinol-binding protein, zinc, and iron were performed.
Of eight children (12.5%) with subclinical vitamin A deficiency, one child had a marginal serum vitamin A of 11 μg/dl. Retinol-binding protein concentrations were significantly lower in two subjects with abnormal conjunctival impression cytology. Serum zinc, which when low can mimic signs of ocular vitamin …

An Assessment Of Water Sources Related To Major Systems Of Agricultural Land Use In Kentucky, Robert L. Blevins, Gerald R. Haszler, Grant W. Thomas, Kenneth L. Wells, William W. Witt
Soil Science News and Views
Recent years have seen a greater public concern about the quality of the nation's water resources. While initial concerns targeted point source pollution, the emphasis in recent years has shifted to non-point source pollution, including the effect of general practices used by fanners in agricultural production systems. Since there was no reliable data base on such effects for Kentucky, the state's General Assembly passed legislation during its 1990 session directing the University ofKentucky's College of Agriculture (UK.CA) to assess the effect of agricultural practices on quality of the state's waters. As part of the efforts undertaken by the UKCA in …

Ec95-745 Managing Livestock Odors: Principles, Assessment And Planning, Richard K. Koelsch
Ec95-745 Managing Livestock Odors: Principles, Assessment And Planning, Richard K. Koelsch
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Odors associated with livestock manure represent a growing challenge for livestock producers. Livestock production trends such as more animals per farm and expanded reliance upon manure storage have added to the odor muisance. Implementing other environmentally friendly practices such as manure nutrient management and maintenance of surface crop residues for soil conservation also have resulted in additional odor challenges.
Odors originating from livestock wastes are a common source of irritation between producers and neighbors. Confrontations may lead to more stringent local zoning regulations, greater scrutiny of other farm environmental issues, and litigation.
This publication summarizes the underlying causes of livestock …
