Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars

The relative performance of com hybrids grown under similar environmental conditions in 1994 is evaluated in this report. Information in the tables includes both 1994 and 1993-94 grain yields in bushels per acre (bu/acre); and 1994 test weight, moisture percentages of shelled com at harvest, final plant populations per acre, and stalk lodging percentages. The test trials reported in this publication were conducted by the Plant Science Department Crop Performance Testing Program, Agricultural Experiment Station.

The prairie vole is probably the primary rodent that reduces no-till crop plant stands in Kentucky. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) content of 10 parts per million (ppm) for safe drinking water. Because of this, the effect of commercial nitrogen (N) fertilizers in agricultural production as a contributor of NO3-N to surface and groundwater is now being widely examined. The objectives of this study were to try to find an effective inorganic nitrogen (N) fertilizer rate to apply to a corn crop when poultry manure has been used on the field and to see if an N soil test at sidedress time could help predict the amount of N needed.

Lots of 229 kg untreated seed com and com treated with 8 ppm pirimiphosmethyl were stored in unaerated bins and bins modified with a fan blower to provide aeration. The corn was infested artificially with adults of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst); the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky; and eggs of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hiibner), to determine the effects of aeration on insect control in southeastern Georgia. Total temperature units in unaerated and aerated treated corn during the storage period of 15 October through 4 August were 5,729 and 5,196 degree-days, and moisture content was significantly …

Shattercane (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is a forage-type sorghum also known as black amber, chicken-corn, and wild cane. Infestations are most prevalent in Nebraska river valleys and tributaries, but are found in upland areas also.

South Dakota Beef Report, 1994

Net energy (NE) of diets containing 77.7% whole corn of either normal (53.8 Ib/bushel, NC) or light (40.8 Ib/bushel, LC) test weight was determined by total collection and indirect respiration calorimetry using six crossbred steers (avg wt 327 kg). Diet treatments were applied in a switchback design. The steers were initially adapted to ad libitum intake of either NC or LC diets for 32 days followed by 7 days total feces and urine collection. Gaseous exchange was subsequently measured for at least 48 hours. Intake was then reduced to an estimated 1.1 times maintenance for 6 days and collections were …
