Renal Tubular Hypouricemia And Calcium Urolithiasis, Tadashi Kotake, Naoto Miura, Haruo Ito
Renal Tubular Hypouricemia And Calcium Urolithiasis, Tadashi Kotake, Naoto Miura, Haruo Ito
Scanning Microscopy
The information concerning the relationship of hypouricemia with urinary tract stones is limited. We investigated the incidence and types of hypouricemia, and also studied its relationship to urinary tract stones. Hypouricemia was detected in 3 out of 1520 outpatients (0.20%). The loading tests using pyrazinamide, probenecid and benzbromarone showed that uric acid absorption was impaired before tubular secretion in two cases and incomplete postsecretory reabsorption in one case. Complication of urinary tract stone was found in two cases. The composition of the stones was mixed calcium oxalate and uric acid. Hypouricemia should be recognized as one of the causes of …
Microwear Studies Of Early African Hominid Teeth, Pierre-François Puech
Microwear Studies Of Early African Hominid Teeth, Pierre-François Puech
Scanning Microscopy
Studies of microwear on fossil hominid teeth have become an important approach in paleoanthropology. Since there are very few samples of early hominids from East Africa with suitable teeth, this paper presents a review of the occurrence of some dental wear characteristics to provide a data base for reconstructing the diet of the early hominids.
Distinctive microwear features such as furrows, crenulations, stress lines and deep grooves, are interpretive tools that can be used in a biomechanical approach. Occurrence of the same dental microwear patterns in extant species with known dietary differences is indicative of foods that have probably been …
The Growth And Bioenergetics Of Callinectes Sapidus Larvae And The Effects Of Diet Quality On Larval Physiology, James J. Pletl
The Growth And Bioenergetics Of Callinectes Sapidus Larvae And The Effects Of Diet Quality On Larval Physiology, James J. Pletl
OES Theses and Dissertations
Food quality, especially ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), can affect the physiology and metabolic efficiency of larvae of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. These affects may correlate with success in development and juvenile recruitment.
Larvae were exposed to two diets differing quantitatively in ω3 PUFA and respiration, excretion, growth, and feeding rates were measured for each larval stage and the megalopal stage. The energy partitioned to molts and specific dynamic action was also measured. T
he ω3 PUFA enriched diet resulted in a lower respiration rate when compared to the unsupplemented diet, but there was little differences in excretion …

Cross-Cultural Association Between Dietary Animal Protein And Hip Fracture: An Hypothesis, Benjamin Jac Abelow
Cross-Cultural Association Between Dietary Animal Protein And Hip Fracture: An Hypothesis, Benjamin Jac Abelow
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Age-adjusted female hip fracture incidence has been noted to be higher in industrialized countries than non-industrialized countries. A possible explanation which has received little attention is that elevated metabolic acid production associated with a high animal protein diet might lead to chronic bone buffering and bone dissolution. In an attempt to examine this hypothesis, cross-cultural variations in animal protein consumption and hip fracture incidence were studied. When female fracture rates derived from 34 published studies in 16 countries were regressed against estimates of dietary animal protein, a strong, positive association was found. This association could not plausibly be explained by …
Factors Affecting Fasting Urinary Calcium Excretion In Stone Former Patients On Different Dietary Calcium Intake, Piergiorgio Messa, Giuseppe Mioni, Rossana Franzon, Michele Messa, Aldo Cruciatti, Sandro Giannini, Angela D'Angelo
Factors Affecting Fasting Urinary Calcium Excretion In Stone Former Patients On Different Dietary Calcium Intake, Piergiorgio Messa, Giuseppe Mioni, Rossana Franzon, Michele Messa, Aldo Cruciatti, Sandro Giannini, Angela D'Angelo
Scanning Microscopy
The effects of variable calcium content on daily and fasting urinary calcium and other lithogenic solutes excretion, on the bone turnover index (fasting hydroxyproline urinary excretion) and on the calciotropic hormones were studied in 312 stone former patients with an outpatient protocol and 15 stone former patients in an inpatient study. Furthermore in 60 of these patients, 30 while on a low calcium diet (LCD) and 30 on a free calcium home diet (FCD), the effects of an oral calcium load (OCL) on bone turnover index, calciotropic hormones and calcium excretion were evaluated. The results demonstrate that an LCD is …
Diet And Diseases Of Zion Canyon Mule Deer, Zion National Park, Utah, Brenda Cunningham
Diet And Diseases Of Zion Canyon Mule Deer, Zion National Park, Utah, Brenda Cunningham
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Many mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in Zion Canyon, Zion National Park appear to be in poor condition. In this study diet composition, nutritional value of the diet, prevalences of diseases and parasites, and herd composition were examined for further evidence of poor condition. Analysis of forage plants indicated a nutritionally adequate diet. This conclusion was also supported by serum chemistry results. Serum titer levels did not reveal any current infections, however, high eosinophil levels in 84% of animals tested were likely due to parasitism. Cysticeri of two species of Taenia, adult Elaeophora schneideri, and Sarcocystis hemionilatrantis were isolated in necropsies …
