New features are observed in normal-emission photoelectron spectra from Ni(100) in a narrow range of photon energies around 25 eV. These features are inconsistent with either direct transitions from the bulk or emission from occupied surface states or resonances. We suggest that they are a consequence of interference between the ordinary direct transition emitting an electron in the normal direction and the excitation from the same initial state into a final state that would normally be emitted from the surface at Γ― in the second surface Brillouin zone, but at this energy is trapped in a surface wave.

Radiation Pressure And The Stability Of Broad-Line Region Clouds, Gary J. Ferland, Moshe Elitzur
Radiation Pressure And The Stability Of Broad-Line Region Clouds, Gary J. Ferland, Moshe Elitzur
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We discuss two constraints on the existence and stability of quasar emission-line gas. The case of a constant pressure photoionized cloud in pressure equilibrium with a surrounding hot gas is considered. We show that the radiation pressure of the internally generated line emission makes a significant contribution to the total pressure in standard broad-line region models, and that models with either a higher ionization parameter or lower gas density are dominated by radiation pressure and hence unstable. Further, clouds with ionization parameters lower than the standard value cannot be supported by any hot gas which is heated only by the …

Theoretical Study Of Silylene Insertion Into N-H, O-H, F-H, P-H, S-H, And Cl-H Bonds, Krishnan Raghavachari, Jayaraman Chandrasekhar, Mark S. Gordon, Ken Dykema
Mark S. Gordon
The potential energy surfaces for the insertion reactions of silylene into NH3, Hp, HF, PH3, H2S, and HCl have been characterized in detail by using ab initio molecular orbital theory, including electron correlation and zero-point corrections. All the interactions involve the initial formation of a donor-acceptor complex followed by a proton shift via an unsymmetrical high-energy transition state. The binding energies of the complexes as well as the rearrangement barriers for the hydrogen migration of these complexes to give the normal valent compounds have been calculated in all cases. The complex between SiH2 and NH3 exists in a deep minimum …

Perturbation Analysis Of The Limit Cycle Of The Free Van Der Pol Equation, Mohammad Dadfar, James Geer, Carl M. Andersen
Perturbation Analysis Of The Limit Cycle Of The Free Van Der Pol Equation, Mohammad Dadfar, James Geer, Carl M. Andersen
Computer Science Faculty Publications
. A power series expansion in the damping parameter E of the limit cycle U(t; E) of the free van der Pol equation Ul + E( U2 _1) U + U =0 is constructed and analyzed. Coefficients in the expansion are computed up to 0(E24) in exact rational arithmetic using the symbolic manipulation system MACSYMA and up to O(E163) using a FORTRAN program. The series is analyzed using Pade approximants. The convergence of the series for the maximum amplitude of the limit cycle is limited by two pairs of complex conjugate singularities in the complex e-plane. These singularities are the …

Chemistry Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Purified EBV DNA and cloned DNA fragments were trapped in Sendai virus (SV) envelopes during envelope reconstitution. The DNA-loaded reconstituted envelopes (RSVE/DNA) served as gene-transfer vehicles using the capability of RSVE to fuse with normal and tumor cells. The efficiency of RSVE-mediated EBV DNA transfer into lymphoid tumor cells and fresh human lymphocytes was 5-10% of the enveloped 3H-labeled EcoRI fragment B of EBV DNA. Purified intracellular EBV (B95-8 strain) DNA induced EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA) in 0.2-1% of human lymphocytes, transiently stimulated cellular DNA synthesis, but did not fully transform cells. Cloned Sal I F1 fragment [approximately equal to …

Magnetoresistance Of Small, Quasi-One-Dimensional, Normal-Metal Rings And Lines, C. P. Umbach, S. Washburn, R. B. Laibowitz, Richard A. Webb
Faculty Publications
The magnetoresistance of sub-0.4-μm-diam Au and Au60Pd40 rings was measured in a perpendicular magnetic field at temperatures as low as 5 mK in search of simple, periodic resistance oscillations that would be evidence of flux quantization in normal-metal rings. However, instead of simple oscillations, a very complex structure developed in the magnetoresistance at low temperatures. Fourier analysis of all the data did not reveal convincing evidence for flux quantization in the rings. Complex structure similar to that observed in the rings was also found in the magnetoresistance of short, narrow, Au and Au60Pd …

Some Comments On The Concepts Of Dose And Dose Equivalent, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann
Some Comments On The Concepts Of Dose And Dose Equivalent, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann
Robert Katz Publications
Although dose is the simplest and most widely used measurement of a radiation field, it does not always lead to an unambiguous estimate of response. This is reflected in the very wide range of relative biologic effectiveness (RBE) values for biological systems. The ambiguity arises from the focus on energy deposition as the source of biological effect, whether in macroscopic or microscopic volumes. The properties of the biological detector play a role equally important to the properties of the radiation field in their interaction. To predict even the most experimentally accessible biological response, cell killing, we must know the probability …
The Effects Of X-Irradiation On The Metamorphosis And Budding Of Aurelia Aurita, Michael John Prokopchak
The Effects Of X-Irradiation On The Metamorphosis And Budding Of Aurelia Aurita, Michael John Prokopchak
OES Theses and Dissertations
With the aid of the Aurelia Metamorphosis Test System, the acute or subtle morphological and behavioral effects of irradiation on the Norfolk Aurelia aurita were described and the sensitivity to X-irradiation of those organisms receiving thyroxine and those not receiving thyroxine was compared. Levels of radiation were 0 (control), 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 and 40,000 rads. Morphology of the ephyrae, statolith and rhopalia numbers were recorded using the light microscope, Developmental abnormalities of the scyphistomae and ephyrae were recorded with the scanning electron microscope and light microscope. Two major findings from this investigation were the absence of rhopalia and statoliths …
Tectonic Implications Of Late Tertiary Strata Exposed Along The Piankatank River, Eastern Virginia, Daniel Stephen Lane
Tectonic Implications Of Late Tertiary Strata Exposed Along The Piankatank River, Eastern Virginia, Daniel Stephen Lane
OES Theses and Dissertations
Biostratigraphic analysis of Late Miocene and Pliocene strata along the Piankatank River in eastern Virginia exposes a juxtaposition of the Eastover and Yorktown Formations. This structure is situated on a NE trending alignment of geological, geomorphic, and geophysical features which run from southern Virginia to northern Delaware. Tectonic jointing in isolated sandstone bodies and fracture controlled drainage patterns provide further evidence of post-middle Pliocene tectonism in the region. The lateral spacing of this structure from the Stafford and Brandywine fault zones and other linear features on the Coastal Plain strongly implies that a structural similarity exists between the Piankatank structure …
Stratigraphy And Textural Analyses Of A Beach Ridge Complex, Cape Henry, Virginia, Daniel Leland Oyler
Stratigraphy And Textural Analyses Of A Beach Ridge Complex, Cape Henry, Virginia, Daniel Leland Oyler
OES Theses and Dissertations
Eight lithological units, documented from the analyses of 26 boreholes, comprise five laterally extensive horizons in the subsurface of Cape Henry, Virginia. Interpretations of the environments of deposition for those units are based upon textural and compositional features, fossils, thickness and distribution of strata, and previous reports about late Tertiary and Quaternary deposits in nearby areas. The incised, Pliocene Chowan River Formation (Unit H) underlies Pleistocene Units F and G which are concentrated in a buried river valley beneath Cape Henry. Estuarine Units D and E resulted from a marine transgression of the study area during the early Holocene. The …

Photoionization Of Atomic Chlorine Above The 1S Threshold, Siamak Shahabi , Anthony F. Starace, T.N. Chang
Anthony F. Starace Publications
The total photoionization cross section of the 3p subshell of atomic chlorine is presented with use of the recently developed open-shell transition-matrix method of Starace and Shahabi. The role of electron correlations is studied by comparison with Hartree-Fock and close-coupling calculations. In contrast to 3p-subshell photoionization of argon, it is shown that, in chlorine, final-state interchannel interactions are very strong while virtual pair excitations have a weak effect on the shape of the cross section, serving mainly to reduce the discrepancy between length and velocity results. Our results are compared in detail with other theoretical results above …
Numerical Experiments With The Quasigeostrophic Potential-Vorticity Equation, Peter L. Spence
Numerical Experiments With The Quasigeostrophic Potential-Vorticity Equation, Peter L. Spence
OES Theses and Dissertations
A method is developed to model the circulation of a barotropic, 8-plane ocean under an imposed steady wind stress. The model includes the effect of both horizontal and vertical friction along with nonlinear advection of vorticity. Implementing the method involves solving the unsteady quasigeostrophic potential-vorticity equation using a compact finite difference scheme (Gatski, Grosch, and Rose, 1982).
Once developed, this model is used in four separate numerical experiments. In each experiment, a model ocean with an initial flow field is driven to a steady state solution. Vertical viscosity is held constant in the first three experiments while lateral viscosity is …

Amatitlan, An Actively Resurging Cauldron 10 Km South Of Guatemala City, Richard L. Wunderman, William I. Rose
Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications
A 14×16 km diameter collapse caldera has been recognized 10 km south of Guatemala City, Guatemala. The caldera is north of the presently active volcano Pacaya and west of Agua, a large stratovolcano. The caldera was not previously recognized because its eastern and western margins coincide with faults that outline the Guatemala City graben and because the northern margin of the caldera is buried by pyroclastic rocks. The existence of the northern caldera margin is now established by gravity data and a variety of geological observations including circumferential faults, hot springs, well-log data, and lithological changes in sedimentary rocks. A …
