Small Mammals In Openings In Virginia's Dismal Swamp, Robert K. Rose Dec 1981

Small Mammals In Openings In Virginia's Dismal Swamp, Robert K. Rose

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In a study of small mammals of openings in the Dismal Swamp of Virginia, seven species were obtained using pitfall traps. Samples included several species rarely caught in the Swamp - seven specimens of the Dismal Swamp subspecies of the southern bog lemming, Synaptomys cooperi helaletes, the first collected in this century; two least shrews, Cryptotis parva; and 15 southeastern shrews, Sorex longirostris fisheri . Results are compared to previous studies, conducted primarily in forested habitats, in which the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, and the golden mouse, Ochrotomys nuttalli, were numerically dominant.

The Spatial Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, James William Newlin Aug 1981

The Spatial Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, James William Newlin

Master's Theses

The hypothesis is that spatial distributions of phytoplankton standing crop and photosynthetic capacity in Westhampton Lake are homogeneous was tested. Distributions were analyzed with respect to horizontal and vertical planes separately and combined. The study was divided into three time period: 1) late summer stratification, 2) early fall mixing, and 3) fall turnover, based on isothermal lines of the lake at the deepest station. Phytoplankton standing crop was measured by spectrophotometric and fluorometric methods. The photosynthetic capacity was measured flurometrically. Combined horizontal and vertical spatial distribution of standing crop was clumped for the entire lake and during each time period. …

Population Stability Of Three Species Of Zooplankton In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, James Christopher Conyers May 1981

Population Stability Of Three Species Of Zooplankton In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, James Christopher Conyers

Master's Theses

Populations of zooplankton, Keratella cochlea's (Rotifera) Bosmina longirostris (Cladocera), and Mesocyclopsedax (Copepoda) were sampled in Westhampton Lake from June 30 to December 22, 1978. Population densities were estimated over time and analyzed for stability relative to the occurrence of rainfall. Two aspects of stability were used for analysis and given operational definitions as follows: Resistance - a population was resistant if its density was not more variable during periods of rain compared with periods of little or no rain; Persistence - a population was persistent if its density during periods of rain was not different from its density in periods …

The Political And Legal Framework For Cable Television Franchising By Virginia Local Government, Clyde Edward Roettger

Master's Theses

Within the last decade state-of-the-art cable television has gone from an unsuccessful, premature proposal in Virginia, to operative franchises in several jurisdictions , including Richm::m.d, Henrico, Chesterfield, Arlington, and Alexandria. There are also a number of franchises which have been in operation for many years and which are intended largely for reception improvement with sone minimal extra services, such as those in Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights. It is proposed here to raise significant issues which could have been addressed by Virginia state and local government as to the regulation of this rapid growth of cable television in the Cormnnwealth, …

Water Quality In A Small Tidal Creek: Parker Creek, Virginia, Carl F. Cerco, Albert Y. Kuo Mar 1981

Water Quality In A Small Tidal Creek: Parker Creek, Virginia, Carl F. Cerco, Albert Y. Kuo

Reports

Parker Creek is a branched tidal creek located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In its southern branch, the creek receives waste inputs from a poultry processing plant. A study has been conducted to determine the effects of these inputs and to formulate a mathematical model of the creek system suitable for water quality planning. The model and field studies show the creek may be divided into two zones, an upstream zone dominated by freshwater flows and waste inputs, and a downstream zone dominated by conditions in adjacent Metomkin Bay. In the upstream zone of the waste-receiving branch, conditions of …

The Survey also showed that coming to terms with this crisis is proving to be difficult.

The Vascular Flora Of The Kersey-Crump Creek Watershed, Hanover County, Virginia, Eddie Reeves Smith

Master's Theses

A floristic survey was conducted in the Kersey-Crump Creek watershed, Hanover County, Virginia from spring 1978 through summer 1980. This upper Coastal Plain area (42 km2) near the fall line yielded 514 species of vascular plants, representing 334 genera and 113 families. Four hundred and seventy-nine county records were established. Panax trifolium, colonizing a rich wooded creek bottom, was the only plant rare to Virginia. Voucher specimens are deposited in the herbaria of the University of Richmond, Virginia, and the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia.

Recreational Boating In Virginia: A Preliminary Analysis, Thomas Murray, Jon A. Lucy Jan 1981

Recreational Boating In Virginia: A Preliminary Analysis, Thomas Murray, Jon A. Lucy

Reports

Increasingly, recreational boating and its supporting industries are being affected by governmental policy and regulatory and allocation decisions. Clearly, those charged with making these decisions cannot understand the impacts of their decisions on related business, individuals, and their livelihoods without possessing some knowledge of the general linkages between boating and local economies. This initial estimate of the economic impacts of boating in Virginia is a first step in that direction. Hopefully, a better knowledge of the nature, recent growth and present magnitude of boating in the Commonwealth will insure that decisions made which influence its existence will be'based on the …
