James A. Garfield (1831-1881), the only preacher to ever occupy the White House, was a product of the profound social, intellectual and religious ferment of the early decades of the nineteenth century which produced the American religious movement known as the Disciples of Christ. The first fifty years of Disciple history closely paralleled Garfield’s life. The purpose of this study is to focus on the intimate Garfield-Disciples relationship, and to show its reciprocal nature. This study is an examination of the contributions made by Captain Dan Jones, called the father of the Welsh Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a pioneer to the Great Basin. Jones was one of the all-time missionary greats, instrumental in converting over 5,000 Welsh people and their introduction into the Utah pioneer society. He operated a steamboat on the Mississippi for the Mormon Church and later a commercial boat on the Great Salt Lake for Brigham Young. Jones headed a steambot expedition in opposition to an attempted kidnapping of Joseph Smith in Illinois. The …

In his acceptance address, he said he would work to "overcome the apathy" which he said had characterized the Association in recent years. Doctor Truman was a professor of dental physiology and operative dentistry at the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery from 1865 to 1876. He incurred the antagonism of many dentists by strongly advocating the admission of women to the dental profession. He had served as corresponding secretary of the Association from 1906 to 1908. Doctor Thorpe was the first dean of Barnes Dental College of St. Louis, which he and two other dentists organized in 1903. He was assistant secretary of the Federation Dentaire Internationale for five years, and originated the Fourth International Dental Congress, held in St. Louis in 1904.
