"A recent Letter to the Editor of this newspaper pointed out part of the problem of our capital city. Whether one agrees with the writer or not, it is important to consider what he said because this is the image of the city which he carried away with him."

The Spatial Pattern Of Upper Income Class Residential Location In Rio De Janerio, Brazil, Regina Bienenstein Zoninsein

Architecture Master Theses

This study is about the residential location of the upper-income class in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It focuses on the spatial pattern of this location and its relationship with the characteristics of the natural environment and the availability of public services and facilities.

It shows that Rio de Janeiro's spatial structure up to the nineteenth century was similar to the Latin American Colonial Model: the city developed around the main plaza which concentrated the elite class.

During the nineteenth century, the first elite settlements were formed outside the city center in a spatial pattern which approximated to Hoyt's Sector Model: …

The Public Markets Of London Before And After The Great Fire Of 1666, Susan Henderson

School of Architecture - All Scholarship

Transition periods such as England experienced during the seventeenth century are particularly efficacious for the study of the development of design concepts as the controversy which is generated during times of great socioeconomic change heightens the contrast between the old and new, and more clearly reveals the relationship between the physical and the social and economic environments. The purpose of the study is to examine the rebuilt city in terms of the changing forces which shaped it. The scope is a detailed examination of one particular aspect of the post-fire reconstruction period -- the public market system.

The study begins …

The recent discussions on the proposal for an auto-restricted zone in Kennedy Plaza have centered essentially on one idea: should this area continue to be used for cars and parking space or should it be turned over to pedestrians, with limited auto access, increased bus usage, and fewer parking spaces?

"They line many of the streets in the older urban centers of Rhode Island. By present housing standards, they are considered out of fashion. Often in need of repair, built on small lots and crowded together, the multifamily, three-decker is a unique form of urban architecture."

The Polygonal Chapter House: Architecture And Society In Gothic Britain, John Robert Zukowsky Jan 1977

The Polygonal Chapter House: Architecture And Society In Gothic Britain, John Robert Zukowsky

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Romanesque survivals have long been considered puissant elements in the formation of an English Gothic architecture. Introductions and innovations within the architectural vocabulary of the British Isles can be equally salient. One such innovation of visual prominence is the polygonal plan for chapter houses.

Chapter houses are the board rooms of ecclesiastic foundations. They are usually square or rectangular in plan. Only in England do we find the appearance of a new plan-type, a circle, in the chapter house of Worcester Cathedral from ca. 1120. But from the year 1200 through the 1400s the polygonal and not circular plan is …
