Letter By Jose Chapiro To Earl Clement Davis, Jose Chapiro
Letter By Jose Chapiro To Earl Clement Davis, Jose Chapiro
Manuscripts, 1933-1953
There is a substantial expression of gratitude for Earl Davis in the Acknowledgments section of José Chapiro's 1947 book Thoughts for Each Day selected from the writings of William Ellery Channing:
“Finally, I am particularly gratified to inscribe here the name of Earl C. Davis, the sage of Petersham, Massachusetts, and a distinguished citizen of the Free State of William Ellery Channing. A tireless reader, he is also a perpetual student of that ‘gay science’—the word is Nietzsche’s—in which scholarship and life complement and fertilize each other. Earl C. Davis cultivates it with the same joy and earnestness of purpose …
Why The Birth Of Jesus Is Celebrated?, Earl Clement Davis
Why The Birth Of Jesus Is Celebrated?, Earl Clement Davis
Sermons, 1933-1953
In Earl Davis's later years, he used shorthand for his sermons.
Here, Davis states that we celebrate the birth of Jesus because of the faith he had -- "his consecration to a great and generous purpose" -- and the fact that he made good when tested, even unto death.

Not Revelation But Discovery, Not Forms But The Holy Spirit, Earl Clement Davis
Not Revelation But Discovery, Not Forms But The Holy Spirit, Earl Clement Davis
Sermons, 1933-1953
This is a particularly rich sermon by Earl Davis. His main point is that no matter how challenging or difficult the present may seem, we are moving irresistibly to a better future. He says 'better' because, as he understands the term, the Holy Spirit ("the whole healthy life, life with values and standards, life with purpose, life healthy and vigorous with its eye on some better tomorrow, some better age, some better world") is ever moving in us and about us, unexhausted and dynamic." The lesson from Hebrews 3 is again about working through a discouraging time.

The Consensus Of Sandomierz. A Chapter From The Polish Reformation, Jaroslav Pelikan Jr
The Consensus Of Sandomierz. A Chapter From The Polish Reformation, Jaroslav Pelikan Jr
Concordia Theological Monthly
From April 9 to 14, 1570, representatives of Polish Calvinism, of Polish Lutheranism, and of the Bohemian Brethren met in the city of Sandomierz in southwestern Poland and signed a document acknowledging each other's confessions and doctrines as orthodox and looking forward to the time when all three could be united in one confession and one national Polish Church; that document was the so-called Consensus Sendomiriensis, the Consensus of Sandomierz. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the conditions which produced it, and to explain the circumstances under which it was adopted.

Men are asserting that Luther had no right to say of his teaching: "Haec dixit Dominus." All that he could say was that according to his interpretation of Scripture He said so and so; and as his opponents said the same, the matter is left in doubt; no man can be divinely sure of his doctrine.

Native Christian Movements In The Philippine Islands, Arnold Strohschein
Native Christian Movements In The Philippine Islands, Arnold Strohschein
Bachelor of Divinity
The story of the Independent Filipino Church is actually the story of one man, Bishop Gregorio Aglipay. It was this man who led the Filipino masses in a break from Rome to get up a truly Filipino national Church, a Church that a Filipino would be proud to claim as his own a church organized end conducted altogether by Filipino people. Therefore, it is necessary that we go into the life and background or this prominent man, Gregorio Aglipay, that we might learn what prompted him to lead his people in a revolt against Rome.

Sacramentalism In The Roman Catholic Church, Jack H. Ruff
Sacramentalism In The Roman Catholic Church, Jack H. Ruff
Bachelor of Divinity
In view of the current wave of Romanist propaganda, the purpose of this paper is to re-examine the sacramental system of Rome in the light of the Scriptures and history. Objective examination will show that: a) The sacraments have become the shackl.es to bind men to the Church of Rome, b) The sacramentalism or the Romanists leads to doubt or carnal security, c) The papists' system is inadequate as shown by the very practice of the Catholic Church.
