Cross-Pollinating Music: The Past, Present And Future Of Genre-Blending Experimental Musicians, Vanessa Ague
Cross-Pollinating Music: The Past, Present And Future Of Genre-Blending Experimental Musicians, Vanessa Ague
Capstones
Recently, experimental music that mixes popular genres with academic styles has skyrocketed into the mainstream. Part of that’s because of the democratizing power of the internet, part of that’s because it’s a style that’s slowly become more prevalent over many years. This essay explores the different ways experimental musicians blend popular genres into their compositions, providing a succinct timeline of the style’s history and a playlist that features musical examples. The Temple Of Immensity: For Choir And Electronics, Steven Naylor
The Temple Of Immensity: For Choir And Electronics, Steven Naylor
Honors Projects
the temple of immensity is a composition for 16-part choir and fixed media electronics composed by Steven Naylor using astronomical data concerning the stars nearest to Earth and their properties. “The temple of immensity” is an archaic and rarely used term, defined as “the universe or the complete overhead expanse of the heavens, especially as conceived as an object of religious reverence.” This piece seeks to convey feelings of wonder and awe for outer space through the setting of an original self-composed poem and through the use of star data to determine musical aspects. The resulting 28-minute composition blends voices …
"A New World For Instrumental Art": An Exploration Of The Nineteenth-Century Saxophone Quartet And Its Repertoire, Laney Sheehan
"A New World For Instrumental Art": An Exploration Of The Nineteenth-Century Saxophone Quartet And Its Repertoire, Laney Sheehan
Honors Projects
This Honors Project examines the major characteristics of the nineteenth-century saxophone quartet and its repertoire through the lens of four musical works: Hector Berlioz’s Hymne (for six wind instruments of Adolphe Sax), Jean-Baptiste Singelée’s Premier Quatuor, Jérôme Savari’s Quatuor pour Saxophones, and Caryl Florio’s Quartette (Allegro de Concert).
Concertina For 12 Musicians, Michael Boss
Concertina For 12 Musicians, Michael Boss
Music Theses and Dissertations
There is ample repertoire that demonstrates bitonality and polytonality. Composers like Bartok used bitonality in his piano piece Mikrokosmos. Within neo-classicalism, Stravinsky used an aggressive and biting bitonality in his most famous work, The Rite of Spring.
But these techniques are not exclusive to the orchestral or chamber music idioms. Jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus was no stranger to executing these schemes within the improvisational work Zoo-Bab-Da-Oo-Ee, a simple blues tune he wrote early in the development of his musical canon. Over the course of the piece, the harmonic tissue becomes thematic. It is common practice within this …

"You Are Safe. You Are Calm. You Are In Control.", Carly Erst
Graduate Thesis Collection
"You are safe. You are calm. You are in control." is a piece written out of a state of emotional and physical exhaustion. The piece uses an electronic track comprised of the sounds of distressed children recorded at a daycare and a flex string quintet that plays along with the track. This paper explores the reasoning behind the music, the connections the piece has to the past, and the relevance of the piece now and in the future.
Multiple Approaches To Auditory Rhythm: Development Of Sustained Musical Beat And The Relation To Language, Development Of Rhythmic Categories Via Iterated Production, And A Meta-Analytic Study Of Neural Entrainment To Beat, Karli Marie Nave
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Rhythm is ubiquitous to human communication, coordination, and experience of music. In this dissertation, I address three empirical questions through three different methodologies, all of which contribute to the growing body of literature on human auditory rhythm processing. In Chapter 2, I present a registered report detailing the results of independent conceptual replications of Nozaradan, Peretz, Missal, & Mouraux (2011), all using the same vetted protocol. Listeners performed the same tasks as in Nozaradan et al. (2011), with the addition of behavioral measures of perception. In neuroscience, neural correlates to musical beat perception have been identified, yet little to no …
Engaging With The Score: Wadada Leo Smith, Graphic Notation, And The Performer’S Perspective, Kennedy Taylor Dixon
Engaging With The Score: Wadada Leo Smith, Graphic Notation, And The Performer’S Perspective, Kennedy Taylor Dixon
Masters Theses
As a Composer/Performer, my work exists in both realms. This thesis reflects the principle that my experience as a violist influences my compositional process and vice versa. Since identifying under both artistic skill sets, it has become evident that the two areas that exist as a creative and presentational output, thrive off one another’s success.
In June 2019, I had the chance to play Wadada Leo Smith’s String Quartet No. 3: Black Church, The First World Gathering of the Spirit (1995) at the Nief-Norf Summer Festival. This encounter was the first time I interacted with graphically notated scores as a …

Scattered People, Shared Identity: An Examination Of Music And Identity Among Jewish Populations In Germany, France, And Israel During The Holocaust, Jessica Catherine Staedter
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of music’s role in identity formation, specifically focusing on Jewish identity in Germany, France, and Israel before and during World War II. This thesis is an examination of how societal changes function as a catalyst for identity negotiations, how said negotiations function within cultural context, and, above all, how music functioned on all sides of these arguments. The following sections will discuss the current trends in Jewish identity research, the historical events of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century with particular focus on Jewish life before and after the Napoleonic era, the role of …
Khruangbin On Tour, Meghan Eileen Connolly
Khruangbin On Tour, Meghan Eileen Connolly
Graphic Communication
My senior project, Khruangbin On Tour, creates the opportunity to ideate and promote Khruangbin’s, a three-person band, tour through branding and merchandise. The goal is to create visuals, such as a poster or t-shirt design, to complement their songs and the band as a whole through the use of color palettes, typography, objects and illustrations. The music’s feeling and aesthetic should be reflected in the visual aspects as it represents the artist overall and speaks to the audience.

The Machine Is Angry, Seth David Allen
The Machine Is Angry, Seth David Allen
Graduate Thesis Collection
At its heart (or lack thereof) The Machine is Angry is a theater work. The visual components are as equally important as their acoustic counterparts. Sounds are only as valuable as the images they evoke and the intention of The Machine is to outline a picture that simultaneously conveys community and isolation; the idea that one can feel most alone when in a crowded room.
Constructivism In Choral Music Education: Supplemental Activities For The Traditional Choral Ensemble, Allison Renee Fojo
Constructivism In Choral Music Education: Supplemental Activities For The Traditional Choral Ensemble, Allison Renee Fojo
Graduate Thesis Collection
Constructivism in music education can help teachers and students alike better their educational experience by working as a collaborative team. In the choral classroom, constructivist teaching establishes the teacher as the facilitator of learning rather than the “teacher as conductor.” Teachers help foster the musical-thinking of the ensemble. Students learn and retain information when teachers can support learners’ understanding of musical ideas and work within the student’s zone of proximal development. Through the use of teacher-guided questioning, cognitive apprenticeship, informal music-making, CMP, problem-solving, and Understanding by Design, students become active participants. Included are supplemental activities for the traditional choir classroom …

Relationships Between Working Class, First Generation College Students And Their Parent(S)/Guardian(S): A Phenomenological Study On The Impacts Of Middle Class Socialization, Lindsay Ellen Mason
Dissertations
This constructionist phenomenological dissertation study explored stories from nine working class, first generation college students, specifically how middle class socialization on a four year university campus located in the Mountain West region of the United States impacts the relationships with their parent(s)/guardian(s). My primary research question was: How does attending college at a 4 year public university influence first generation, working class students’ relationships with the ir parent(s)/guardian(s)? My sub research questions were: What role does middle class socialization that occurs on a 4 year public university campus play in impacting this relationship? And what role does online learning/remote learning …
The Haitian Méringue Through Stylized Piano Compositions From 1880-1930, William Leroy Harned
The Haitian Méringue Through Stylized Piano Compositions From 1880-1930, William Leroy Harned
Dissertations
This study primarily describes the Haitian méringue from a historical analysis and a collective musical analysis of digital editions published from 2016 to 2020 that include previously unavailable piano compositions from Haiti’s first composers. Secondarily, this study clarifies the performance practice of innovative rhythmic notations from Haiti and Puerto Rico to indicate a relaxed syncopation of the tresillo-based five-beat syncopated rhythm. The history of the development of the méringue involves the creolization of mainly European and African dances. Comparison with compositions of origin dances reveals common structures between them. The European salon style inspired these Haitian compositions that resemble Romantic …
The Concept Album As Postmodern Literature: A Critical Examination Of Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral, Kelly E. Stith
The Concept Album As Postmodern Literature: A Critical Examination Of Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral, Kelly E. Stith
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With the humanities becoming progressively more open to interdisciplinary studies, there exists a space for music to be part of the discourse surrounding literature. One of the most important developments for music was the rise of the concept album, a medium where the individual tracks are defined by a larger theme or a unifying narrative. The concept album first emerged in the 1960s and became a method for musicians to experiment with expanded storylines and lyrical motifs that overthrew classical models of music albums. One of the most
influential concept albums, Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral, which came out …

Influences Of Chinese Cultural Traditions On Piano Music By Chinese Composers: Analytical Study Of Representative Piano Works Through 1980, With Pedagogical And Performance Considerations, Zhipeng Li
Dissertations
Since the Western piano music culture entered China, Chinese musicians have never stopped exploring the piano. The piano compositions grew up with the new China and have been influenced by different historical periods, from the earliest imitation of Western music structure and harmony, to the later incorporation of Chinese folk music, and finally to the bold fusion of Chinese and Western composition techniques into a Chinese style piano music. The development of Chinese piano music has been recognized by the world in the last one hundred years. More and more musicians are interested in Chinese piano works. Understanding Chinese piano …
America Arts For All: Promoting Musical Opportunity And Equity For Socioeconomically Challenged Students, Sydney L. Amos
America Arts For All: Promoting Musical Opportunity And Equity For Socioeconomically Challenged Students, Sydney L. Amos
Honors Theses
America Arts for All examines the student benefits of being involved in the Central Music Academy, a program that provides free music lessons to students on free or reduced lunch. Some of the benefits their program specifically realizes are higher graduation and college entry rates as well as higher interest in and knowledge of music in comparison to their general public school peers. Low-income students are significantly under-represented in music programs across the nation because they cannot afford instruments or program fees or because they feel that they cannot compete with their more socioeconomically privileged peers. Examination of the student …
Embracing Worship And Performance, Robson N. Galvao
Embracing Worship And Performance, Robson N. Galvao
Selected Honors Theses
Music is a very powerful tool. It is a very important part of the world around us. Some would even say that without it, life would not be the same. When it comes to church, it is not any different. Music plays a very large part of most church services today, whether that be having someone play a church organ in a more traditional church or by having a full worship band with lights and production in a more contemporary church. With that comes the issue of performance within the church music context. One of the biggest issues within the …
Disparities In Programming African American Solo Vocal Music On College Campuses Across The United States, Ramelle Brooks
Disparities In Programming African American Solo Vocal Music On College Campuses Across The United States, Ramelle Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the representation of African American composers within the solo vocal literature genre of classical music. Literature suggests the music of African American composers is seldom taught in classical musical studies. The study explored one publicly available college recital database from each U.S. geographical region (Northeast, Midwest, South, West), which included listings of songs performed at each recital. The researcher recorded the number of recitals including African American composers and provided a numerical breakdown of song genres associated with African American Americans that included African American arts songs, Spirituals, Blues, Gospel, Jazz, and operatic arias. The number of …
Transcribing Baroque Lute To Marimba: Viability, Techniques, And Pedagogical Possibilities, Cory James High
Transcribing Baroque Lute To Marimba: Viability, Techniques, And Pedagogical Possibilities, Cory James High
Theses and Dissertations
Transcriptions and adaptations of works originally composed for other instruments are commonplace within the current marimba repertoire. Marimbists have been borrowing repertoire from other instruments and transcribing or arranging them for performance on the marimba due to the relative youth of the instrument. These adaptations began as a necessity, but they are still often programmed due to their popularity, and because many academic institutions require the performance of era-specific works or works by certain composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, and no literature was composed for the marimba during those times.
Source instruments for these marimba adaptations have varied some, …
Songs And Salamanders: Investigating The Relationship Between Music And Environmental Education, Walker Nyenhuis
Songs And Salamanders: Investigating The Relationship Between Music And Environmental Education, Walker Nyenhuis
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Environmental education and creative arts such as music have complemented each other for many years. This capstone project investigates the relationship between the two disciplines by asking the question: How can environmental educators use music to increase students’ understanding of the natural world? Focusing on the professional development of environmental educators and other informal educators is important because these individuals will have many opportunities to promote connection between students and the natural world throughout their careers. Musicians and songwriters such as the Banana Slug String Band and Joe Reilly provide invaluable examples of musical experiences that both inform and entertain …
A Schema-Theoretic Approach To Hierarchy In Eighteenth-Century Tonality, Simon K. S. Prosser
A Schema-Theoretic Approach To Hierarchy In Eighteenth-Century Tonality, Simon K. S. Prosser
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Prevalent modern-day theories of tonal hierarchy for eighteenth-century music, especially those influenced by the ideas of Heinrich Schenker, have been called into question by schema theorists such as Robert Gjerdingen and Vasili Byros, who argue from both cognitive and historical evidence that eighteenth-century tonal cognition was sequential or “windowed” rather than hierarchical. This dissertation seeks to recuperate the concept of tonal hierarchy in eighteenth-century music, drawing on research that reconstructs the implicit tonal theories of the partimento and thoroughbass traditions, as well as concepts of hierarchy from schema theory itself, to formulate a historically and cognitively grounded theory of tonal …
“Leisure With Decorum”: Gentlemen Making Music In The Georgian Era, Lidia A. Chang
“Leisure With Decorum”: Gentlemen Making Music In The Georgian Era, Lidia A. Chang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project examines the musical activities of Georgian gentlemen with the goal of illustrating the ways that recreational music-making tested the boundaries of gender, class, and nationality. While the English nobility could respectably engage in music-making, socialize with professional musicians (subverting, or temporarily suspending otherwise rigid class boundaries), and openly extol the virtues of Continental culture without compromising their gentlemanliness, English gentlemen walked a much thinner line. In pursuit of these claims I will expand the scope of primary sources beyond conduct books and novels to include selections of unpublished, peripheral accounts of recreational music-making as found in letters, diaries, …
A Teacher's Companion For The Emerging Electric Orchestra, Rachael Greenman
A Teacher's Companion For The Emerging Electric Orchestra, Rachael Greenman
Recital Papers
Historically orchestral string instruments have been defined as classical instruments. As a result in primary and secondary school programs students have been relegated to playing music by Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Those programs and that world is rapidly evolving. A broad range of new electric string instruments and technologies are being introduced into the classroom and everything from pop to rock to show tunes are being played engaging students in new and exciting ways. The challenge for teachers and administrators is how to start such a program in their school. This thesis explores the unique challenges and opportunities that this …
Factors Influencing Student Continuance In Instrumental Music Classes: A Quantitative Analysis, Andrew Duncan
Factors Influencing Student Continuance In Instrumental Music Classes: A Quantitative Analysis, Andrew Duncan
Masters Theses, 2020-current
In this quantitative study I investigated relationships between motivation, music aptitude, academic achievement, race, gender, and instrument type and student continuance in their first year of instrumental music study. Beginning instrumental music students (n = 30) completed the EVC Survey (Kosovich et al., 2015) to determine expectancy, value, and cost. I collected data on music aptitude, gender, race, and instrument type from teacher and school records, and conducted binary logistic regression and Chi-Square tests in order to determine predictors of continuance in instrumental music classes. I excluded gender, race, and instrument type from the logistic regression model because they did …

Recordings of these pieces also accompanies the work.
Analysis Of Music Genre Clustering Algorithms, Samuel Walter Stern
Analysis Of Music Genre Clustering Algorithms, Samuel Walter Stern
Theses and Dissertations
Classification and clustering of music genres has become an increasingly prevalent focusin recent years, prompting a push for research into relevant algorithms. The most successful algorithms have typically applied the Naive Bayes or k-Nearest Neighbors algorithms, or used Neural Networks to perform classification. This thesis seeks to investigate the use of unsupervised clustering algorithms such as K-Means or Hierarchical clustering, and establish their usefulness in comparison to or conjunction with established methods.
