On The Imperishable Face Of Granite: Civil War Monuments And The Evolution Of Historical Memory In East Tennessee 1878-1931., Kelli Brooke Nelson Dec 2011

On The Imperishable Face Of Granite: Civil War Monuments And The Evolution Of Historical Memory In East Tennessee 1878-1931., Kelli Brooke Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After the Civil War individuals throughout the country erected monuments dedicated to the soldiers and events of the conflict. In East Tennessee these memorials allowed some citizens to promote their ideas by invoking both Union and Confederate Civil War sympathies. Initially, East Tennesseans endorsed the creation of a Unionist image to advertise the region's potential for industrialization. By 1910 this depiction waned as local and northern whites joined to promote reconciliation and Confederate sympathizers met less opposition to their ideas than in the past. After 1919 white East Tennesseans, enmeshed in the boom and bust cycles of the national economy, …

"Untitled", Janet Rose Engel-Julian

All Student Theses

The emotions from memories and the passing of time can be an intriguing thing. The more time that passes the more difficult it can be to remember details thus changing the memory. The more people who share a specific memory, the more memories may exist, yet each person’s recognition of the event may vary. When family members recall a childhood event, they can have a plethora of viewpoints and interpretations all depending on the time passed and roles played along with previous life experiences.

For centuries, history was recorded orally through ceremony and storytelling, and some cultures also involved the sharing of food. …

Model Socialist Town, Two Decades Later: Contesting The Past In Nowa Huta, Poland, Kinga Pozniak Sep 2011

Model Socialist Town, Two Decades Later: Contesting The Past In Nowa Huta, Poland, Kinga Pozniak

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This work examines people’s experiences of the postsocialist transformation in Poland through the lens of memory. Since socialism’s collapse over two decades ago, Poland has undergone dramatic political, economic and social changes. However, the past continues to enter into current politics, economic debates and social issues. This work examines the changes that have taken place by looking at how socialism is remembered two decades after its collapse in the Polish former “model socialist town” of Nowa Huta. It explores how ideas about the past are produced, reproduced and contested in different contexts: in Nowa Huta’s cityscape, in museums, commemorations, and …

Does Crowding Obscure The Presence Of Attentional Guidance In Contextual Cueing?, Steven William Fiske Jul 2011

Does Crowding Obscure The Presence Of Attentional Guidance In Contextual Cueing?, Steven William Fiske

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The contextual cueing effect was initially thought to be the product of memory guiding attention to the target location. However, the steep search slopes obtained in contextual cueing indicate an absence of attentional guidance. We hypothesized that crowding could be obscuring the presence of attentional guidance and investigated this possibility in 2 experiments. Crowding was manipulated by varying the density of items in the local target region in a contextual cueing task. We observed a significant reduction in search slopes between the novel and repeated conditions when crowding was reduced. Enhancing crowding eliminated the contextual cueing effect. These findings suggest …

The Neural Correlates Of Retrospective Memory Monitoring: Convergent Findings From Erp And Fmri, Jeremy Clark Roper Jul 2011

The Neural Correlates Of Retrospective Memory Monitoring: Convergent Findings From Erp And Fmri, Jeremy Clark Roper

Theses and Dissertations

Monitoring the accuracy of memory is an automatic but essential process of memory encoding and retrieval. Retrospective memory confidence judgments are making effective and efficient decisions based on one's memories. The neural processes involved in retrospective confidence ratings were investigated with EEG and fMRI using a recognition memory task designed such that participants also rated their confidence in their memory response. Correct trials (hits and correct rejections) were examined for differences related to the participants' level of confidence in their response. There were significant differences in electrophysiological activity (in the FN400 and the late parietal component) associated with confidence rating, …

Essential Oils Peppermint And Rosemary Exposed To The Olfactory Sense And The Effects On Cognition And Perceived Mood, Tara A. Ricciardelli

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Recent research suggests that essential oils of a certain quality can enhance memory consolidation and cognitive performance. The present study examined whether the essential oils rosemary and peppermint were powerful enough to significantly improve short-term memory in recall and recognition tasks. Participants were in a room with a device that diffused a scent or water (no scent) for ten minutes prior to their entry. The participants viewed word lists and were later tested for accuracy in terms of recall and recognition. Results from a one-way analyses of variance demonstrated that peppermint and rosemary did not significantly improve short-term memory or …

Presence Within Absence, Jennifer Halvorson May 2011

Presence Within Absence, Jennifer Halvorson

Theses

Your grandparents' and parents' values do mark you and continue to mark you as you grow older, cause I think of a lot of things that, oh, I wouldn't do that because grandpa wouldn't do that. He was the neatest thing since sliced bread, as far as I was concerned. Marion Kesner This remark was made by my grandmother in the summer of 2009. It was a closing statement to one of our many discussions revolving around her history. The conversation led me to realize that the connection to the past contributes deeply to our current identity. Through time and …

Looking Back: An Examination Of Family Archives, James E. Bentley Iii May 2011

Looking Back: An Examination Of Family Archives, James E. Bentley Iii

Art and Design Theses

With digital technology now dominating the film and photography industry, analog resources are becoming scarce. Simultaneously, memories preserved through personal family archives also are in danger of deterioration. Time, heat and humidity can cause film to decay just as the passage of time and the erosion of memory allows their contents to fade. In Looking Back, my family film and photography archives are exhumed and collectively examined by myself and my family. Reflecting upon this massive accumulation of imagery and their attached memories seems an endless task. However, as expressed in Looking Back, the greater the effort to …

Role Of Synapsin In Long-Term Synaptic Facilitation In Aplysia, Anne Hart May 2011

Role Of Synapsin In Long-Term Synaptic Facilitation In Aplysia, Anne Hart

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Enhanced expression of the presynaptic protein synapsin has been correlated with certain forms of long-term plasticity and learning and memory. However, the regulation and requirement for enhanced synapsin expression in long-term memory remains unknown. In the present study the technical advantages of the marine mollusc Aplysia were exploited in order to address this issue. In Aplysia, learning-induced enhancement in synaptic strength is modulated by serotonin (5-HT) and treatment with 5-HT in vitro of the sensorimotor synapse induces long-term facilitation (LTF) of synaptic transmission, which lasts for days, as well as the formation of new connections between the sensory and …

Confabulation: Photographs, Memory, And Painting, Erin Cunningham May 2011

Confabulation: Photographs, Memory, And Painting, Erin Cunningham

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is in regards to paintings created by Erin Cunningham for the completion of her MFA in Visual Arts at Boise State University in the spring of 2011. She primarily discusses the tenuous connection between photography and memory. Examining ideas developed by Roland Barthes, she set out to prove that while there is a distinct difference between the factual language of photography and the fictive language of memory, that the two have a type of symbiotic relationship. Particularly in regards to familial photography, the paintings she has developed from this concept examine the construction of memoir using images that …

Currere, Illness, And Motherhood: A Dwelling Place For Examining The Self, Michelle C. Thompson May 2011

Currere, Illness, And Motherhood: A Dwelling Place For Examining The Self, Michelle C. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a pathography, my experience as a mother dwelling with illness which began because of my son's illness. The purpose of this dissertation is two-fold: to examine my Self as a mother dwelling with illness so that I may begin to work through repressed emotions and to further complicate the conversation begun by Marla Morris (2008) by illuminating the ill person's voice as one which is underrepresented in the canon. This dissertation is written autobiographically and analyzed psychoanalytically. The subjects of chaos, the Self, and motherhood are examined as they apply to my illness. In addition to psychoanalysis, …

Based On A True Story, Mary Elkins Apr 2011

Based On A True Story, Mary Elkins

Theses and Dissertations

Trying to remember is a form of forgetting. Memory fades, changes meaning, and disappears over time. While trying to find other ways to preserve stories about my family, it occurred to me that I could recreate what I remember in clay. I am creating collections of physical mementos of the memories that fill my head, focusing mainly on my childhood. Remembering is in itself an act of forgetting, and thus this is my memory preservation kit. I am recording memories of my family for posterity in clay before I have a chance to forget.

Rewrite, Jamie Lawyer

Theses and Dissertations

“Rewrite” is a photographic project that utilizes the domesstic space as a stage for emotional projection of a traumatic memory. The work considers the relationship that exists between an individual and the rooms and objects within a home space in an attempt at understanding an individual’s mental state. “Rewrite” explores the ways in which we exist through our home and how a juxtaposition of objects and materials can create meaning. The photographs are a visual interpretation of the emotions surrounding sexual abuse/assault/rape as they have related to my own personal history and conversations I have had with women close to …

The Poetics Of Remembrance: Communal Memory And Identity In Heidegger And Ricoeur, David Leichter Apr 2011

The Poetics Of Remembrance: Communal Memory And Identity In Heidegger And Ricoeur, David Leichter

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation, I explore the significance of remembering, especially in its communal form, and its relationship to narrative identity by examining the practices that make possible the formation and transmission of a heritage. To explore this issue I use Martin Heidegger and Paul Ricoeur, who have dedicated several of their major works to remembrance and forgetting. In comparing Heidegger and Ricoeur, I suggest that Ricoeur's formulation of the identity of a subject and a community offers an alternative to Heidegger's account. For, if Heidegger's critique of subjectivity offers the possibility of a new relationship to history and community, it …

Memory, Identity, And The Rhetoric Of Quilts, J. Jane Amelon Apr 2011

Memory, Identity, And The Rhetoric Of Quilts, J. Jane Amelon

English Theses & Dissertations

Quilts have been documented as artifacts of past experiences and social circumstances, but the rhetorical aspects have been largely unexplored. In this study, I establish quilting as a form of knowledge about memory, one of the canons of rhetoric. This task requires a rhetorical framework of memory to accomplish its end.

In order to create a rhetorical framework for the study of memory, I examine preservative and generative memory as represented in women's quilts. Previous quilt studies have not addressed these two facets of memory, and previous memory studies have paid little or no attention to quilts. Additionally, this study …

Non-Being And Memory: A Critique Of Pure Difference In Derrida And Deleuze, Frank Scalambrino Jan 2011

Non-Being And Memory: A Critique Of Pure Difference In Derrida And Deleuze, Frank Scalambrino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The psychology philosophy split has restricted viable readings of today's psychological research. My project (within the philosophy of psychology) is to provide these readings. Specifically, in this dissertation I analyze the data and the interpretations of a large number of contemporary memory research articles. I use these articles to support my claim that Immanuel Kant misunderstood what in the Critique of Pure Reason he labeled "affinity." Further, Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze inherit this Kantian misunderstanding by way of G.W.F. Hegel's attempt to eliminate it. Put another way, the component in question is that which grounds the post-structuralist justification for …

The Poreh Nonverbal Memory Test, Chelsea Kalynn Kociuba Jan 2011

The Poreh Nonverbal Memory Test, Chelsea Kalynn Kociuba

ETD Archive

Nonverbal memory focuses on the remembrance of information that cannot be described or put into a verbal component, such as remembering a person's face, identifying abstract stimuli, or remembering objects. Because nonverbal memory focuses on the remembrance of things that cannot be put into words it is a difficult construct to measure accurately. One area that is of great importance in the assessment of nonverbal abilities is spatial memory (Reynolds & Coress, 2007, Foster, Drago, & Harrison, 2009). Most of the tasks that have been developed to assess this construct employ verbally mediated clues allowing the examinee to compensate for …

How To Make Love In A Graveyard: An Integrative Approach To Celebrating Trauma, Memory, And History Through Alain Resnais’ Hiroshima, Mon Amour, Molly M. Pearlstein Jan 2011

How To Make Love In A Graveyard: An Integrative Approach To Celebrating Trauma, Memory, And History Through Alain Resnais’ Hiroshima, Mon Amour, Molly M. Pearlstein

Senior Projects Spring 2011

This paper is an exploration of trauma through the lens of Alain Resnais’ 1959 film, Hiroshima, Mon Amour. Elle. We hypothesize that Elle develops Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after witnessing the traumatic death of her first love. Diagnosing Elle using the DSM-IV-TR criteria for PTSD, we demonstrate how she continues to fit the criteria for PTSD fourteen years later. Within this investigation, we target dissociation as an important factor in Elle’s posttraumatic response. The issue of dissociation is discussed in relation to memory, and to a larger extent, historical trauma. Through an integrative approach, film analyses elaborate the elusive …

Tin Dioxide Memristors On Glass And Plastic Substrates, Oscar Del Real Jan 2011

Tin Dioxide Memristors On Glass And Plastic Substrates, Oscar Del Real

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

NanoMIL has studied and developed SnO2-based memristors, while the W.M Keck Center has been a research leader in printed silver inks. The focus of this thesis is to take the previous generation of memristors on glass and develop a process for creating memristors on flexible Kapton film for the first time. Moreover, collaborative work between the two UTEP laboratories produced memristors with printed silver top electrode contacts, also for the first time. These approaches may enable inexpensive flexible memory.

Maturation of the process was achieved by understanding important process parameters and subtle differences between glass and Kapton substrates. Moreover, electrical …

Memoryscapes: Place, Mobility, And Memory In The Post-Dicatorial Southern Cone, Rebbecca M. Pittenger Jan 2011

Memoryscapes: Place, Mobility, And Memory In The Post-Dicatorial Southern Cone, Rebbecca M. Pittenger

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

The urban landscapes of Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay lay bare the markings of these countries‘ turbulent political and economic pasts, their transition to democracy, and diverse efforts to preserve memory. Claudia Feld‘s observation that these countries have experienced a 'memory boom‘—not a deficit—in recent years manifests itself as much culturally and politically as it does spatially, through the creation of memorials, memory parks, museums, and memory-related performances and discourses. Along these same lines, narratives of memory recur among artistic and cultural works of the post-dictatorial Southern Cone—not exclusively among memorials and other designated sites of recollection, but along the everyday …

Myosin Ii In Hippocampal Synapses: Regulation Of Synaptic Plasticity, Strength And Actin Dynamics By Two Distinct Isoforms, Maria Dolores Rubio Jan 2011

Myosin Ii In Hippocampal Synapses: Regulation Of Synaptic Plasticity, Strength And Actin Dynamics By Two Distinct Isoforms, Maria Dolores Rubio

All ETDs from UAB

Cytoskeletal actin filaments underlie dendritic spine plasticity, critical for several forms of learning and memory. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms that regulate actin dynamics is essential to elucidate memory formation pathways. Myosins, a superfamily of actin binding proteins, have emerged as candidates for regulation of actin dynamics in the brain. Several myosin class II isoforms have been identified in brain, but their individual contribution to synaptic activity is still unknown. Based on the finding that myosin IIB regulates actin polymerization in the growth cone of developing neurons and that it is necessary for maintenance of dendritic spine structure, I hypothesized that …

The Effects Of Response Modality On Retrieval, Adam Putnam Jan 2011

The Effects Of Response Modality On Retrieval, Adam Putnam

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The testing effect refers to the finding that retrieval practice can lead to enhanced recall on future tests. Despite being a widely researched phenomenon, the underlying mechanisms of the testing effect remain unknown, and basic issues are unresolved. The purpose of these experiments was to investigate how different response modalities influence retrieval both on initial and delayed tests. More specifically, we were interested in whether subjects can recall more via writing or speaking, whether writing: or speaking) on a first test can lead to better performance on a second test: and whether the type of second test would matter), and …

Age Differences In Proactive Facilitation And Interference: The Role Of Remindings, Chris Wahlheim Jan 2011

Age Differences In Proactive Facilitation And Interference: The Role Of Remindings, Chris Wahlheim

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

A common finding is that specific types of memory performance decline as a function of age. Among the situations that produce these differences are those in which proactive interference: PI) occurs. PI refers to impaired memory for new information as a result of previous learning of competing information. However, research has shown that PI situations can sometimes be facilitative to memory performance for both young and older adults when information is integrated effectively. One potential integration mechanism is the retrieval of earlier competing information during study of new information. Such instances have been referred to as "remindings", and they serve …

Often Wrong But Never In Doubt: Categorized Lists Produce Confident False Memories, Kurt Desoto Jan 2011

Often Wrong But Never In Doubt: Categorized Lists Produce Confident False Memories, Kurt Desoto

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In the categorized list procedure, subjects study words from semantic categories, then take a recognition test on those items. Subjects are likely to recognize common: high output dominance) category members even when they are not studied. Across three experiments, we sought to extend the categorized list procedure, further develop an explanation of why false recognition of category members occurs in this procedure, and modulate false recognition of category members by manipulating encoding and retrieval phases. Experiment 1 extended previous categorized list research, showing that subjects are likely to false alarm with high confidence to high output dominance category members that …

Sleep, Memory, And Aging: Effects Of Pre- And Post-Sleep Delays And Interference On Memory In Younger And Older Adults, Michael Scullin Jan 2011

Sleep, Memory, And Aging: Effects Of Pre- And Post-Sleep Delays And Interference On Memory In Younger And Older Adults, Michael Scullin

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The present research investigated the relationship between sleep and memory in younger and older adults. Previous research has demonstrated that during the deep sleep stage: i.e., slow wave sleep), recently learned memories are reactivated and consolidated in younger adults. However, little research has examined whether memory consolidation occurs during deep sleep in older adults. Younger adults and older adults encoded word pairs: e.g., channel - result) in the morning or evening and then returned 12 hours or 24 hours later for a final test: three groups: 12-hr wake, 12-hr sleep, 24-hr PM-PM sleep). Sleep stage scoring was obtained by having …

Making Memory: Techne, Technology, And The Refashioning Of Contemporary Memory, Kimberly Lacey Jan 2011

Making Memory: Techne, Technology, And The Refashioning Of Contemporary Memory, Kimberly Lacey

Wayne State University Dissertations

My dissertation answers two questions: Does the tension between interactive technologies and rhetoric re-shape the nature and relevance of the canon of memory? Do interactive technologies affect the ways we remember and persuade? I argue that my interpretation of techne suggests possibilities for the creation and production of new types of memory in combination with digital media. To interrogate this connection, I suggest three interpretations of the Greek concept, techne: as a process that is inherently productive; as a force that renegotiates contemporary sources of social power; and as a skill that balances expert knowledge with instrumentality. I explore …
