General Francisco Franco’s brutal dictatorship (1939-1975) was one of the darkest periods in Spain’s recent history. During this dictatorial regime, political detractors were mercilessly persecuted, tortured and massacred. In 1975, Franco died leaving the legacy of nearly four decades of repression and over 150,000 victims on his back. Spain then cautiously headed into a process of democratization, with fear and horror still etched on the country’s memory. While politicians promised a smooth transition to democracy, their insistence to look ahead meant Spaniards were asked to neglect the country’s painful past. Radiation effects are an important reliability concern for space and defense electronics, especially for non-volatile memory (NVM). State-of-the-art radiation hard NVMs have very limited capacity (in megabytes range), and high cost, making them impractical for several applications that require larger storage capacities. In this context, NAND flash memory is very attractive due to its high density (>1 tera-bytes/sq. inch) relatively low cost (<$1 per giga byte), light weight and small form factor. Hence this dissertation conducts a systematic study on the radiation effects on the commercially available off-the-shelf NAND flash memory chips. First, an experimental demonstration of radiation effects were performed on the 3-D NAND flash memory using a Co60 Gamma-ray source at Sandia National Laboratory. A significant layer-to-layer bit error variation within a physical memory block of the irradiated memory chip was observed. The possible application of these findings for the radiation-tolerant smart memory controller design were explored. Second, this dissertation evaluates a radiation induced error mitigation strategy using read-retry method. The read-retry function is typically offered in the high-density NAND memory chips to recover data once the default memory read method fails. In this work the read-retry method was applied on the irradiated 3-D NAND chip and an algorithm is proposed for its efficient implementation. Third, a systematic study was conducted on the effects of low dose gamma radiations ( 2rad(Si)/day) on high density NAND flash memory chips. The measured cumulative bit error rate (BER) over two months shows significant linear increase with exposure time and BER is independent of the prior damage. Fourth, a theoretical framework was developed to understand the total ionizing dose sensitivity of the commercial flash memory chips. The theoretical framework motivated the basic design rules for using the commercial flash memory chips as dosimeter.

Currently, the expenditures for higher education by the Dominican government are at record highs (OECD, 2012; MESCYT, 2018). Yet, nationwide, student attrition rates in universities average a challenging 50% (OECD, 2012). This percetange climbs to 80% in Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD). UASD is the oldest public university and the largest higher education institution in the Dominican Republic, hosting 44% of all undergraduate students enrolled in the country (OECD, 2012; UASD, 2018). The institution’s attrition levels suggest that while the Dominican government’s investment in higher education is high, the return on that investment is low.

On July 24, 1915, the passenger boat Eastland capsized while docked in the Chicago River, killing 844 of its 2,500 passengers. The Eastland Disaster remains the greatest loss-of-life tragedy on the Great Lakes. Using museum exhibits, government documents, trial transcripts, period newspapers, oral interviews, images, ephemera, and popular culture materials, this study examines the century after the disaster in terms of the place the Eastland has held in regional and national public memory. Neuroimaging methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measure neural activity changes activity in the brain while subjects perform experimental tasks. The people of the Dutch-American community constructed and maintained a strong ethnoreligion identity in the twentieth despite pressures to join the mainstream of the United States. A strong institutional completeness of congregations and schools resulted from and contributed to this identity. The people in these institutions created a shared identity by demanding the loyalty of members as well as constructing narratives that convinced people of the need for the ethnoreligious institutions.

The dissertation evaluated the ability of adult literacy learners with dyslexia to assess their cognitive abilities in two separate domains: reading and memory. This study also evaluated the effect that one-on-one tutoring had on the learner's ability to accurately self-assess these cognitive abilities. Twenty adult literacy learners (n = 20) with dyslexia were tested in both domains. This study also included a control group of 10 good readers (n = 10) who were administered the same three standardized tests. This data was collected by administering three standardized assessments. Despite the fact that over 200,000 Irish men fought in the British Army during the First World War, Ireland's sizeable contribution to the war remained in the shadows of history for most of the twentieth century. This dissertation examines the cultural components of the memory of the Great War in Ireland and argues that, taken together, they constitute an alternative Irish national identity that threatened and challenged republican nationalism. These cultural components existed in the realm of vernacular memory, which lay beyond the reach of the Irish government.
