Framing The Fight: Revolutionary Feelings In Virtual Communities, James Reilly Jun 2024

Framing The Fight: Revolutionary Feelings In Virtual Communities, James Reilly

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study considers how social media impacts emotional processing, and ultimately social movement development. Through a multidisciplinary lens, I explore how social media fits within larger media ecologies, particularly during times of social upheaval and collective action. Grounded in an examination of organizational efforts in advance of the 2011 Egyptian revolution, I look at how communication patterns create common emotional cues that help form the movement. Considering framing, emotional habitus, and subjective agency within digital spaces, I demonstrate how social media has emerged as an articulating space for social movements to develop and plan before drawing wider, offline populations to …

A Content Analysis On Emotions Presented In Preschool Children's Television, Sarah Austin May 2024

A Content Analysis On Emotions Presented In Preschool Children's Television, Sarah Austin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Learning about emotions is an essential aspect of early childhood. Because of the increasing access to screen time during the COVID-19 pandemic, children have more resources in their environment to learn from. However, before more can be known about whether children are learning about emotions during their screen time, it is important to know how emotions are being presented to them in their online content. Therefore, this study sought to gather data regarding how four emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear) are portrayed verbally and nonverbally among three types of preschool television shows (entertainment, balanced, educational). A sample of 60 preschool …

Helping Preschool Students Understand Emotions, Kenia Escobar May 2024

Helping Preschool Students Understand Emotions, Kenia Escobar

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focal topic of my capstone project is preschool-aged children’s social-emotional development. Young children are in the time they learn from experiences. New studies show that adults benefit from social-emotional learning (SEL) when it is implemented during early childhood (Newman & Moroney, 2019). The need for service provides preschool children with tools to help them feel a sense of belonging, express their feelings, and establish relationships. I have developed a series of activities and lessons to help preschoolers learn more about feelings and relationships. First, emotional self-awareness will be covered because when preschoolers become aware of their emotions, their leadership, …

Emotional Regulation In Preschool Age Children, Esmeralda Mendez May 2024

Emotional Regulation In Preschool Age Children, Esmeralda Mendez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This capstone focuses on teaching preschool students about emotional regulation and emotional understanding. Many preschool students have not developed the appropriate language to express their emotions making it difficult to regulate emotions. Poor emotional regulation at a young age can have negative effects on a child's life. For example, it can affect their behavior at school, their ability to deal with transitions during the school day, and their social relationships (Loomis, 2023). Young children have a difficult time regulating emotions because they are not sure of the feelings that they have and have not developed the skills to control their …

Helping Kindergarteners Understand Their Emotions And Their Peers, Marelin Guadalupe Cruz Garcia May 2024

Helping Kindergarteners Understand Their Emotions And Their Peers, Marelin Guadalupe Cruz Garcia

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The social-emotional development is described in this study. This study examines children who lack pro-social-emotional abilities and find it difficult to build meaningful interactions with others. In my work, I discuss how research and the lessons I taught my participants can help children gain greater social-emotional abilities and an understanding of different emotions. I work with kindergarteners who are five to six years old because I want to support them in developing deep connections with their peers and in learning about their feelings. The issue I will be bringing up is that kids struggle to build positive relationships with their …

Decoding Affective Information From Neuronal Populations In The Human Hippocampus, Alexander N. Lawriw Apr 2024

Decoding Affective Information From Neuronal Populations In The Human Hippocampus, Alexander N. Lawriw

LSU Master's Theses

The hippocampus is understood to play a key role in the formation of episodic memories. Prominent theories suggest this is made possible through use of sparse encoding schemes, in which a small number of neurons encode each episodic event using a distinct pattern of neuronal activity. However, more recent computational models suggest that the hippocampus may also be capable of representing semantic structure, a notion previously thought to be exclusive to the neocortex. In our previous line of work, we trained multivariate classifiers to predict the semantic content, specifically affect, of computer-generated faces given spiking data taken from individual neurons …

Adult Age Differences In Response To Sociomoral Violations, Alyssa R. Minton Mar 2024

Adult Age Differences In Response To Sociomoral Violations, Alyssa R. Minton

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Moral judgments and emotional reactions to sociomoral violations are heavily impacted by a perpetrator’s intentions, as malicious intent poses a threat to social harmony. Given that older adults are more motivated to maintain interpersonal harmony relative to younger adults, older adults may be more reactive to malicious intentions. In five studies, I investigated adult age differences in moral judgments and emotional reactions to sociomoral violations. In Studies 1-3, participants read scenarios in which a perpetrator either (a) desired to harm another but nothing happened, or (b) harmed another accidentally without malicious intent. Study 2 incorporated additional scenarios designed to evoke …

A Walking Meditation With Queer English Teachers Of Color: Diffracting Stuckness, Empowerment, Resistance, And Vulnerability In Nepantla, Ethan T. Trinh Jan 2024

A Walking Meditation With Queer English Teachers Of Color: Diffracting Stuckness, Empowerment, Resistance, And Vulnerability In Nepantla, Ethan T. Trinh

Middle and Secondary Education Dissertations

There are two purposes of this study. The first purpose is to explore what possibilities could emerge when emotions and queerness are co-constituted in teaching and research, especially in interdisciplinary fields (i.e., Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, critical queer studies, affect studies, and research methodologies). The second purpose is to trace queerness and emotions methodologically-theoretically. Two research questions in this study are: What were the possibilities in terms of theory, teaching, and research that queerness and emotions produced through the intra-active conversational process between four queer English teachers of color and Ethan-researcher? and How were queerness and emotions …

"They Are Expecting Us To Stay Strong": How Ambulance Personnel Navigate And Manage Their Emotions In A Rural Region Of Northern California, Tina M. Orton-Owens

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This research examines how emergency medical service (EMS) workers navigate and manage their calls in Humboldt County, a rural region of Northern California. The primary theoretical framework is drawn from Arlie Hochschild’s theory of Emotional Labor. This paper examines how emotional labor impacts EMS workers within a rural environment and with limited resources. I also look at how COVID-19 complicated EMS workers’ experiences. This paper is based on qualitative research where I conducted 13 mostly face-to-face interviews with EMS workers throughout the County between 2020 and 2022. Interviews consisted of 30 questions and interviews ranged in length from 1 to …

Changing The Communication For A Changing Climate: Effects Of Climate Change Communication On Identity, Emotions, And Mobilization, Liam Schwartz

Departmental Honors Projects

What are the most constructive emotions to evoke in climate change communication for diverse groups of people in a way that encourages pro-environmental behavior? A specific communication style and subsequent emotional response may best mobilize people interested in efforts to address climate change compared to people who are less invested in the issue. In this study, 927 valid participants surveyed were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a “fear” condition, a “hope” condition, and a control condition. All participants were asked a series of questions about their demographics, identities, perceptions, values, and environmental attitudes. Following these experimental tasks, they …

Through The Mansion: A Poetry Collection, Zaya Jane Moreno Dec 2023

Through The Mansion: A Poetry Collection, Zaya Jane Moreno

Culminating Projects in English

Expressive writing is a term a lot of people do not recognize in its formal name, but it is a way of writing that some of us use without knowing it. Expressive writing is, as the University of New Hampshire says, “personal and emotional writing without regard to punctuation, verb agreement, or other technical aspects of writing” (UNH Tales). Examples of expressive writing are free writing, journals, diary entries, and more. The idea of expressive writing is cathartic and intimate, letting the writer write what is on their mind without having to worry about the rules of writing in academia.

An Experimental Analysis Of The Effect Of Crisis Response Message Strategies On Consumer Emotions, Perceptual Beliefs And Intended Behavior, Valentina Ahumada Oct 2023

An Experimental Analysis Of The Effect Of Crisis Response Message Strategies On Consumer Emotions, Perceptual Beliefs And Intended Behavior, Valentina Ahumada

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the different dynamics of consumer responses to crisis communication strategies employed by businesses during challenging situations. Focusing on emotions, attitudes, and behavioral intentions, the research explores the impact of denial, diminish, and apology crisis messages on consumers. Drawing on a comprehensive analysis of a crisis scenario, the study illuminates the intricate relationship between these strategies and consumer emotions such as anger, disgust, sadness, and happiness. The findings reveal nuanced patterns, demonstrating that while denial messages evoke strong negative emotions and unfavorable attitudes, diminish messages, when perceived as deflecting blame, can lead to mixed emotional responses and ambiguous …

Understanding Immigration-Based Intractable Conflict Behaviors Through The Lenses Of Social Identity And Emotions, Caryn Cade Moir Sep 2023

Understanding Immigration-Based Intractable Conflict Behaviors Through The Lenses Of Social Identity And Emotions, Caryn Cade Moir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this post-intentional phenomenological study was to understand how participants experience social identity, emotions, and cognitive freezing in the context of immigration-based conflict. Immigration-based conflict in the United States exemplifies intractable conflict; it increases polarization, negative emotions, and intolerance among individuals in the United States. This study included action research; learning more about how participants experienced immigration-based conflict contributed knowledge that mediators can use to better serve parties in conflict, particularly during premediation interviews. The researcher used semistructured interviews to gather data from six participants. The data indicated that immigration-based conflict in the United States is consistent with …

Believing Rationally Given Your Actual Beliefs: On Susanna Rinard’S Pragmatism, Marlon Rivas Tinoco Aug 2023

Believing Rationally Given Your Actual Beliefs: On Susanna Rinard’S Pragmatism, Marlon Rivas Tinoco

Philosophy Theses

Susanna Rinard (2017, 2019, 2022) offers a refined pragmatist view of how to theorize normatively about beliefs. However, David Christensen (2020) disputes Rinard’s claim on rationality by presenting some seeming counterexamples of her theory. In this paper, I challenge Christensen's objections to Rinard's theory. First, I introduce Rinard's theory of belief rationality. Second, I introduce Christensen’s cases that allegedly debunk Rinard’s thesis. Third, I refine Rinard’s theory of rationality by arguing that the rationality of an agent's belief can be based on what is best for them given their existing beliefs, emotions, and perceptual experiences. Last, I will redescribe the …

Phantom Spaces, Craytonia Williams Ii Jun 2023

Phantom Spaces, Craytonia Williams Ii

Masters Theses

The world is built on ‘what-ifs’ and ‘I hopes.’ The more one can dream, the further development goes in design. We are told anything is possible if you put your mind to it, and as we have lived through many different eras, the limit in which we extend our mind has expanded. Research shows that emotional and mental instability has risen over 50% in the past decade in people under 30. How does the understanding of emotions and trauma impact the understanding and the feelings attached to designed spaces for rest and rehabilitation. We are constantly observing and adapting to …

The Development Of A Dance/Movement Therapy Method For Social Engagement With Adolescents In A Partial Hospital Program, Kayleah Pensalfini May 2023

The Development Of A Dance/Movement Therapy Method For Social Engagement With Adolescents In A Partial Hospital Program, Kayleah Pensalfini

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Mental health can significantly impede navigating the social domain during adolescence. Research has indicated social development of adolescents may be impacted by psychopathology and emotional development, further hindering one’s formation of self. There is also limited research showing the effectiveness of Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) with the adolescent population. This writer designed and adapted one DMT session for adolescents to understand this topic better. This capstone will present an adaptable method utilizing a DMT intervention with participants between the ages of 13-17 in a Partial Hospital Program (PHP). This project aimed to examine how DMT can support self-identity and the acquisition …

Civility, Epistemic Injustice, And Criticality: Toward A Praxis Of Affective Democratic Friction, Sally J. Sayles-Hannon May 2023

Civility, Epistemic Injustice, And Criticality: Toward A Praxis Of Affective Democratic Friction, Sally J. Sayles-Hannon

Dissertations - ALL

Socially-privileged students’ discomfort in the social justice classroom as injustice is dramatically increasing in public discourse, especially as the Anti-Critical Race Theory (CRT) movement thrives. It is in the current climate of Anti-CRT that social justice educators must be vigilant of how classrooms could reproduce the very injustices they seek to problematize. Coupled alongside social justice educators’ fears of job security and violence—physical, emotional, and epistemic—calls for civility that function to mute discomfort about systemic injustices could easily creep into classrooms. I claim civility can function speciously—when appeals to civility falsely claim, even if well-intentioned, to create just, open dialogue. …

Big Feelings In Tiny Humans: Examining How Emotions And Current Social Emotional Practices Impact Behavior In The Classroom, Annie Gilb May 2023

Big Feelings In Tiny Humans: Examining How Emotions And Current Social Emotional Practices Impact Behavior In The Classroom, Annie Gilb

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

As a result of COVID-19, many schools are experiencing a rise of challenging behavior among students. This is causing many teachers to implement social emotional practices to help students regulate their behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of social emotional learning, specifically implementing a daily feelings check-in, within a kindergarten classroom. Additionally, this study sought to understand teacher and student perceptions of the current SEL curriculum. This was completed through conducting interviews, surveys, and field notes over a three-week period. Using the constant comparative method, I generated 16 level 1 and 4 level 2 codes …

The New Media Frontier: How Social Media Affects Partisan Attachments, Candidate Evaluations, And Political Emotions, Justin Allen Rose May 2023

The New Media Frontier: How Social Media Affects Partisan Attachments, Candidate Evaluations, And Political Emotions, Justin Allen Rose

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to further our understanding of individual social media use on polarization, evaluation of political candidates, and political emotions. Three separate articles are utilized to illuminate the effects of individual social media use. The first article pushes forward a theory which argues that social media is uniquely positioned to affect partisan feelings due to its propensity to lead individuals into echo chambers—online places that reinforce their existing opinions and attitudes. The second argues that social media plays into the hyper-partisan nature of the American political landscape, and by way, putting forward an atmosphere which will lead individuals to …

Interoceptive Practices Performed In Nature And Not In Nature: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Krista Steinbach, Jennifer Betlach May 2023

Interoceptive Practices Performed In Nature And Not In Nature: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Krista Steinbach, Jennifer Betlach

Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies Research Papers

Interoception is consciously interpreting and integrating bodily sensations. A person’s interoceptive awareness has a lasting effect as the mind and body attempt to maintain homeostasis. Time spent in nature offers greater stress reduction, cognitive functioning, and immune response. Both interoception and nature positively affect well-being, however, no studies describe interoceptive practice and time spent in nature as a combined experience. This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of individuals engaging in a pre-recorded interoceptive practice six times, both in nature and non-nature settings. Eight participants describe their somatic, emotional, physiological, and overall essential experiences using descriptive journal worksheets with open-ended …

Increasing Social-Emotional Skills For First-Graders, Rebecka Baxter May 2023

Increasing Social-Emotional Skills For First-Graders, Rebecka Baxter

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many grade school children may not have yet developed social-emotional skills and may have difficulty managing their emotions when they have challenges or difficulties in school. Children may feel overwhelmed, break rules, act out, or cry as a result of not knowing how to control their emotions. When children learn how to manage their stress and regulate their emotions, they are able to have positive relationships and perform better in school. In order to address the issue of lack of social-emotional skills in elementary school children, I created a two-day lesson for first graders at Barrett Elementary School in Morgan …

Increasing The Emotional Intelligence Of College Students, Katie Montejano May 2023

Increasing The Emotional Intelligence Of College Students, Katie Montejano

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many college students may lack well-developed interpersonal skills and may not yet have cultivated their emotional intelligence. Without developing skills surrounding emotional intelligence, college students may be hindered in the quality of their relationships as well as limited in their emotional connection. When they develop their relationship skills, they are able to foster their emotional growth and have more successful relationships. In order to address this issue, I have created a workshop for freshman college students at California State University, Monterey Bay in Seaside, California.

Enhancing Second Grade Students' Social-Emotional Development, Emily Elias-Castillo May 2023

Enhancing Second Grade Students' Social-Emotional Development, Emily Elias-Castillo

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many elementary students have not yet learned sufficient social-emotional learning skills when interacting with other children at school. In order to engage in acts of kindness and inclusion, children must develop social-emotional learning skills. When children do not have these skills, they may have disciplinary problems, difficulty creating trusting relationships, and understanding their own actions. On the other hand, children who develop these skills are more confident, may have higher academic achievement, and are more socially competent. To address the lack of social-emotional learning skills, I created a two-day lesson for second graders at Freedom Elementary School in Watsonville, California.

Improving Self-Regulation Skills In Kindergarten Students, Elizabeth Andrade May 2023

Improving Self-Regulation Skills In Kindergarten Students, Elizabeth Andrade

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many young children have not yet developed social emotional skills. A lack of social emotional learning and self-regulation skills may result in children who may be unable to manage big emotions such as anger. Without the skills to process these big emotions, they may experience conflict in peer relationships leading to them potentially acting out. Children who learn social-emotional skills inherit self-regulation techniques that help combat emotional distress and encourage regulation. In order to support children in developing emotional regulation skills, I have created a two-day lesson for Kindergarteners at Robert Down Elementary school.

Interpersonal Connection: Examining Synchrony In Emotions And Physiology In Friends During Interactions, Joia Lynette Wesley Apr 2023

Interpersonal Connection: Examining Synchrony In Emotions And Physiology In Friends During Interactions, Joia Lynette Wesley

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Interpersonal synchrony is the alignment of emotions, behaviors, and physiology and is associated with prosocial behaviors and subjective connectedness. Few studies have examined synchrony in friend dyads. The present study compared emotional and physiological synchrony during emotional and neutral interactions, explored how social role may influence empathy, and tested if friendship characteristics predicted synchrony. Participants were 56 friend dyads recruited from a predominantly White, Midwestern university. The study included two sessions. In the first session, participants completed prequestionnaires and each participant identified three emotionally salient situations that they had not shared with their friend. The second session was an interaction …

The Modern Relationship Between Music And Political Preferences, Teresa Martin Apr 2023

The Modern Relationship Between Music And Political Preferences, Teresa Martin

Honors Projects

Music and politics have been interconnected for centuries, and it is difficult to explain a political event without mentioning the contemporary music creation and vice versa; examples include anti-war music during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, a shift to country music with patriotic undertones after 9/11, and so on. Preliminary research suggests that there could be a connection between political ideologies and liking genres of music, but it is relatively outdated (Fox and Williams 1974). There is research surrounding how political polarization contributes to opposing attitudes and preferences (Sears and Valentino 1997, Prinz 2021), and how music has different origins …

Inner Work Community: Shadow Work As Spiritual Formation, Michael Simmons Feb 2023

Inner Work Community: Shadow Work As Spiritual Formation, Michael Simmons

Doctor of Leadership

The NPO statement surrounding this doctoral project is that A theological, practical, and community-centered framework for shadow work is disconnected from Christian spiritual formation. This doctoral project is the culmination of a three-fold process: discovering the need for shadow work in the context of spiritual formation, designing multi-faceted virtually-based opportunities to address this need among individuals and groups, and delivering those opportunities via online courses, one-on-one shadow work, and digital content such as essays, articles, and podcasts. My vocational context is my unofficial organization, and MVP, Inner Work Community, which provides these opportunities. Inner Work Community is extended through partnerships …

I Second That Emotion: A Phenomenological Study Of The Socioemotional Experiences Of Black And Latinx Students In Developmental Education, Toni Foster-Irizarry Jan 2023

I Second That Emotion: A Phenomenological Study Of The Socioemotional Experiences Of Black And Latinx Students In Developmental Education, Toni Foster-Irizarry

Theses and Dissertations

Some community colleges lack the socioemotional support required to help underprepared students grow into autonomous, college-ready learners (Callahan, 2004; Capt et al., 2014). Black and Latinx students could benefit from the inclusion of positive, emotionally supportive programming that acknowledges their personhood, cultural capital acquisition, and potential educational trauma caused by years of negative school experiences and emotions. The current phenomenological study explored the emotion-based perceptions of eight Black and Latinx students’ experiences in developmental education classes at two urban community colleges. The central research question asked, “How do Black and Latinx community college students perceive and emotionally respond to developmental …
