Ethnic And Racial Differences In Emotion Perception, Linda Cheng
Ethnic And Racial Differences In Emotion Perception, Linda Cheng
Psychology Honors Theses
This study analyzed racial differences in the way African Americans and Caucasians perceive emotion from facial expressions and tone of voice. Participants were African American (n=25) and Caucasian (n=26) college students. The study utilizes 56 images of African American and Caucasian faces balanced for race and sex from the NimStim stimulus set (Tottenham, 2006). The study also utilized visual and auditory stimuli form the DANVA2. Participants were asked to judged emotion for each stimulus in the tasks. The BFRT, the WASI, and the Seashore Rhythm test were used as exclusionary criteria. In general the study found few differences in the …
Is All Injustice Created Equal? Exploring The Effects Of Decision Outcome And Procedural Justice On Reactions To Injustice, Gabriel E. Lopez Rivas
Is All Injustice Created Equal? Exploring The Effects Of Decision Outcome And Procedural Justice On Reactions To Injustice, Gabriel E. Lopez Rivas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Organizational justice scholars have ignored the influence that the nature of a decision outcome has upon reactions to perceived injustice, yet research on loss aversion demonstrates that people react more strongly to situations that result in a loss than those that result in an anticipated gain failing to materialize (non-gain). Furthermore, research on regulatory focus has found that the nature of a decision outcome can itself elicit different emotions. Based on this, a cognitive appraisal model of the relationship between injustice and emotions is proposed that accounts for the effect of decision outcome. This model predicts that emotional reactions to …
Falling In Love As A Heuristic For Mate Choice Decisions, Monica D. Burke
Falling In Love As A Heuristic For Mate Choice Decisions, Monica D. Burke
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Selecting a mate is one of the most important and complex decisions that we make in our lives. Research on human decision making has found that we often use simple rules of thumb or heuristics to facilitate complex decision-making tasks (e.g., Gigerenzer & Todd, 1999; Kahneman & Tversky, 1972, 1973; Tversky & Kahneman, 1974, 1983). Recent research has focused on the use of affect or emotion as heuristics that have a strong influence on a variety of decision making contexts (Damasio, 1994; Finucane, Peters, & Slovic, 2003; Loewenstein, Weber, Hsee, & Welch, 2001; Mellers, 2000). The emotion we most closely …
Schizophrenia And Alcohol Dependence: The Combined Effects On Emotion Processing, Sylvia An Ross
Schizophrenia And Alcohol Dependence: The Combined Effects On Emotion Processing, Sylvia An Ross
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Substance abuse co-occurs at high rates with schizophrenia, with alcohol as the most commonly abused substance. Dual diagnoses have been associated with lower levels of quality of life; greater rates of medication noncompliance, homelessness, hostility, violence, legal problems, interpersonal conflict; and increased costs for services; The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of alcohol dependence on emotion processing in schizophrenia. There are currently no studies that investigate this. Research has identified deficits in facial affect processing and cognitive functioning in schizophrenia and chronic alcoholism. However, the level of impairment is less severe in alcoholism; The current study …
Somatic Computationalism: Damasio's Clever Error, Christopher D. Pope
Somatic Computationalism: Damasio's Clever Error, Christopher D. Pope
LSU Master's Theses
Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio wrote a book entitled DESCARTES’ ERROR (1994) in order to address popular misconceptions about the mind, particularly those which relate to Cartesian philosophy. One of the author’s major goals for the book is to argue that emotion contributes to reason, that emotion is in fact necessary for rational thought to occur. In order to link emotion to reason, Damasio proposes a theory of mind which explains several mental functions in terms of neurological representations. Consciousness, reason, instinct and emotion all occur because the brain forms representations of the subject’s body and of the world in which the …
Applying The Appraisal Theory Of Emotionto Human-Agent Interaction, Aaron Pepe
Applying The Appraisal Theory Of Emotionto Human-Agent Interaction, Aaron Pepe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous robots are increasingly being used in everyday life; cleaning our floors, entertaining us and supplementing soldiers in the battlefield. As emotion is a key ingredient in how we interact with others, it is important that our emotional interaction with these new entities be understood. This dissertation proposes using the appraisal theory of emotion (Roseman, Scherer, Schorr, & Johnstone, 2001) to investigate how we understand and evaluate situations involving this new breed of robot. This research involves two studies; in the first study an experimental method was used in which participants interacted with a live dog, a robotic dog or …
