The Elements Of Onstage Lighting And How It Could Impact The Emotion Of An Audience, Kailee Morehart
Honors Theses
Lighting, combined with other aspects of performance, can either make an experience extremely impactful for an audience or it can be completely unnoticed. Lighting is versatile in its ability to be manipulated in different ways to get the desired effect. In addition to having color, lights also have direction, shape, intensity, distribution, quality, movement, and may be changed over time. The combination of these elements can evoke certain emotions in an audience. Opportunities for creativity in this outlet should be explored in order to discover to what extent lighting can impact the emotions of an audience, if at all. In …

This essay accompanies the researcher’s Master of Fine Arts thesis concert, Sensaciones y emociones (performed on September 5 and 6, 2017). Maria Callas, for example, was a pioneer in combining these many factors into her performances. Her application of music and drama in opera makes her an ideal example of a complete and dynamic vocalist. The expression and emotion she poured into each performance transformed how people saw opera and music …

Environmental psychologists, like Robert Gifford who study transactions between individuals and their physical settings, maintain that as an individual's environment is changed, the environment also changes his/her behavior and experience. (Gifford, 2002) Like other segments of a theatrical setting, manipulation of the environment can enhance or constrain a broad range of audience actions from traditional theatre audiences to shoppers in a mall or guests at a wedding. Physical elements, as well as other ambient factors such as lighting, color, and quality of materials, set design, music, fragrance, and room temperature are a sample of the dramatic elements used to orchestrate …
