Polyphony: Multitudes Of Vietnamese National Identity Through Experiential Documentation Of Marketplaces, Jade Nguyen
Polyphony: Multitudes Of Vietnamese National Identity Through Experiential Documentation Of Marketplaces, Jade Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
The exhibition Polyphony brings together photographs from Trades of the Street and Commere(d) Culture, two documentary series portraying Vietnamese marketplaces and businesses across multiple cities in Việt Nam and the United States respectively to provide a cross-cultural and multisensorial perspective on how commercial practices and establishments represent Vietnamese culture and national identity. The market provides insights into Việt Nam’s multilayered history, struggles, ways of living, sense of community, and its vibrant soul and culture. The combination of these two series and the sequencing of the exhibition utilizes the relational nature of photography, which allows new meaning to emerge from a …
The Aesthetics Of The Mexican Public Garden And Its Photographic Compositions (1912-1982), Victor Hugo Rivera-Diaz
The Aesthetics Of The Mexican Public Garden And Its Photographic Compositions (1912-1982), Victor Hugo Rivera-Diaz
Masters Theses
In Mexico, there are currently several collections of photographs which depict the history and development of public gardens and ecological corridors under the management of the National Institute of Anthropology and History. By focusing on two exemplary collections—the Nacho López Collection and Vicente Luengas Collection—I apply a visual studies approach to the photographic archive in order to formulate the Mexican public garden as a branching set of aesthetic (sub-)categories, all of which take into account the creation of garden landscapes vis-à-vis land use policies and historical accounts during the rise of Mexican modernity. In so doing, the primary sub-categories of …
Fragmentation And Fabulation: Reflexivity And The New Black Documentary, Joanna Lehan
Fragmentation And Fabulation: Reflexivity And The New Black Documentary, Joanna Lehan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis concerns the photographic representation of Black bodies in new, reflexive documentary forms that have been increasingly produced and exhibited in the midst of America’s renewed discourse on race. Approaching this argument categorically, focused on the themes of fabulation and fragmentation, my task here is to uncover the gaps and overlaps between earlier critiques of the documentary image and more recent discourse on photography and race by exploring the specific methods through which select recent documentary projects embed and expand these critiques.
Fragmentation is a category of production I use to frame a movement of Black photographic artists …
Gender Journeys : Arts-Based Participatory Action Research With Non-Binary Young Adults, Darren Thomas Cosgrove
Gender Journeys : Arts-Based Participatory Action Research With Non-Binary Young Adults, Darren Thomas Cosgrove
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Increasing attention to the social and health disparities faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people has ushered in much needed attention to issues related to sexuality and gender diversity within social work literature. Among this burgeoning focus has been a particular emphasis on the experiences of transgender people. Such work is particularly relevant to social workers given the heightened rates of harassment and discrimination that transgender people face. Increased scholarly attention presents opportunities for new knowledge to inform social work policy and practice in service to transgender communities. While this expansion in literature addresses several significant needs, …
‘Posed With The Greatest Care’: Photographic Representations Of Black Women Employed By The Work Progress Administration In New Orleans, 1936-1941, Kathryn A. O'Dwyer
‘Posed With The Greatest Care’: Photographic Representations Of Black Women Employed By The Work Progress Administration In New Orleans, 1936-1941, Kathryn A. O'Dwyer
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
For decades, scholars have debated the significance of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), emphasizing its political, economic, and artistic impact. This historiography is dominated by the accomplishments of white men. In an effort to highlight the long-neglected legions of black women who contributed to WPA projects and navigated the agency’s discriminatory practices, this paper will examine WPA operations in New Orleans where unemployment was the highest in the urban south, black women completed numerous large-scale projects, and white supremacist notions guided relief protocol. By analyzing the New Orleans WPA Photography collection, along with newspapers, government documents, and oral histories, a …
Gilded Age Visual Media As The Impetus For Social Change: Jacob Riis's Reform Photography And The Antecedents Of Documentary Film, Denitsa Yotova
Gilded Age Visual Media As The Impetus For Social Change: Jacob Riis's Reform Photography And The Antecedents Of Documentary Film, Denitsa Yotova
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis examines the birth and evolution of the social documentary genre in visual media. It proposes that a mixture of ideology, technology, and social awareness are necessary for a successful social reform. Its review and study of related primary and secondary sources determines that despite the limitations of technology during the nineteenth century, social documentaries were produced long before they were part of the genres of photography and film. By focusing on the work of Danish photographer Jacob Riis and tracing the emergence of the film medium through time, this thesis demonstrates a strong connection between documentary film and …
The Use Of Photography As A Clinical Tool In Social Work : A Theoretical Exploration Using Winnicottian And Jungian Lenses, André N. Zandoná
The Use Of Photography As A Clinical Tool In Social Work : A Theoretical Exploration Using Winnicottian And Jungian Lenses, André N. Zandoná
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
In this theoretical study, the photographic process was examined as having the potential to be used as a psychodynamic clinical tool in social work. Psychodynamic theoretical concepts by Carl Jung and Donald W. Winnicott were examined as guiding principles that will allow clinicians to understand how photography can be useful as a means to understand one's internal experience as well as external relationship with the world. This body of work presented current and potential uses of the camera as an instrument in interpreting the world according to one's subjectivity. In addition to theoretical examination, this research study also presented real …
Southern Portraits, Derek Brandon Bell
Southern Portraits, Derek Brandon Bell
LSU Master's Theses
Photography to me is a passion for recording fractions in time, which evoke a deep response in myself, and the viewer. The response can be one of wonder, love, hate, laughter, or camaraderie. While living and photographing in the gentle South, I am most concerned with and intrigued by portraying her people. My intent is to explore man, his familial characteristics, his sense of community, and his relationship with those around him.
Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen
Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen
Theses and Dissertations
In his 1978 biography of Dorothea Lange, Milton Meltzer appraised Lange's 1936 photography in Utah as nothing more than mundane work done for the benefit of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and not for her own benefit as a photographer. Yet, her work in Utah encapsulates the aspirations, goals, and styles of Lange, and gives insight into her vision as a photographer and representative of the New Deal. Through carefully composed photographs, Lange shows the hardships and hope of life in Utah during the Great Depression.
This thesis investigates Lange's photographs in order to gain a greater understanding of the …

Environment "Atmosphere", Kathleen A. Rose
Theses
I have been very interested in the creation of space (atmosphere) by framing a portion of the environment with a viewfinder. I am specially interested in the relationship of people with people and their connection with their environment. My curiosity stems from my background in sociology; I have a BA in sociology concentrating in urban society and the structure of culture. I also studied urban anthropology and did a hands- on- investigation of Irish culture which resulted in a hand made photography book . The photographic work of Walker Evans, Ernest Haas, Robert Frank, Linda Connor, Dean Brown, Alfred Stieglitz, …

In preparation for this project I have read material on Andean culture and assembled myths and legends indigenous to the region. This collection, along with research I will undertake in Quito, will eventually aid me in the presentations of my thesis. Pending financial considerations I plan to leave for Ecuador in the beginning of June and establish contacts in Quito with Ministerio de Asuntos Indigenas, sociologists, and photographers who advocate in interest in Indian culture, and Peace Corps volunteers working in the highland area. During my stay I intend to be frank and open about my objectives, offering to share …
Nicaragua: A Society In Transition, James Mason Stillings
Nicaragua: A Society In Transition, James Mason Stillings
Theses
Between December 1980 and March 1981, I spent three months in Nicaragua undertaking a documentary thesis project for a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography. Initial preparation for the trip began in May 1980. My thesis exhibition was held October 11-16, 1981. The purpose of the thesis was to "integrate creative expression with social/political concerns by photographing aspects of societal change that have grown out of the popular revolution in Nicaragua." This report is an accounting of that project from its inception to its completion. The project has been a rewarding experience, full of learning and growth. I have …
