Due to the increasing reports of glyphosate resistant weeds, genetically modified (GM) glyphosate tolerant crops have been supplemented with crops resistant to alternative herbicides such as dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). Since the introduction of dicamba and 2,4-D tolerant crops in the U.S., there has been a substantial increase in reports of off-target dicamba and 2,4-D movement and damage (i.e., drift) to non-tolerant vegetation and crops. The off-target damage has been documented by U.S. news sources and increased complaints to State Departments of Agriculture. Dicamba is often tank mixed with glyphosate to increase herbicidal efficacy but may contribute to off-target movement (OTM). In recent years, volatilization has become problematic for dicamba-containing herbicides, resulting in increased regulatory requirements necessitating the use of volatility-reducing agents (VRA) for application. Research was conducted in 2021 and 2022 using low tunnels in a field environment and humidomes in a greenhouse environment to further assess how glyphosate salts and VRAs affect dicamba volatility. Palmer amaranth has a long history of evolving resistance to herbicides to the point it has become a significant row crop production obstacle. Cotton and soybean growers were offered new technologies in 2016, expanding in-crop herbicide options to include dicamba or 2,4-D. Within three years of commercialization, dicamba use in these crops increased ten-fold and growers began to report Palmer amaranth escapes in west Tennessee auxin-tolerant production systems. This study was conducted to determine whether soybean productivity is affected by multiple, sublethal herbicide exposures. The effects of dicamba and 2,4-D on soybean (Glycine max) productivity was investigated at 17 site-years. Relative to a single exposure of dicamba at R1, an additional exposure at either V3 or R3 reduced yield up to 23%. Three or more applications did not further decrease yields relative to an R1&R3 exposure. For 2,4-D, a single application to V3, R1, R3, or R5 soybean did not affect grain yield. However, two exposures of 2,4-D occurring from V3 through R3 reduced yield 5 to 7%. …

This research compared the visual symptomology of four auxin herbicides applied at three rates to simulate tank contamination on non-auxin tolerant soybeans. The herbicides examined were aminocyclopyrachlor (ACP), 2,4-D, dicamba, and aminopyralid. The standard labeled rates (SLR) used to base the application rates were 0.12 kg ae ha-1 for ACP and aminopyralid while dicamba and 2,4-D used 1.12 kg ae ha-1. These four herbicides exhibit similar symptoms on soybeans which is problematic when diagnosing soybean response. Junglerice has become a major weed in Tennessee and across the mid-south. Glyphosate resistance and dicamba antagonism has resulted in the reported control failures and rise in prevalence. Junglerice was the most prevalent weed escape in cotton and soybean fields across Tennessee from 2018 to 2020. In all, 13% of the junglerice accessions could no longer be effectively controlled with glyphosate. Due to poor in-crop control, it has been recommended to start clean when trying to control junglerice and other grasses. Dicamba resistant (DR) cropping technology has increased dicamba use, resulting in observation of dicamba off-target-movement (OTM). Volatility is one form of this movement. Tank mixtures and environmental conditions impact the volatile behavior of dicamba following application. Research was conducted in 2018, 2019, and 2020 to further assess and understand volatility mitigation by understanding tank-mix effects and utility of irrigation on volatility mitigation. Low tunnel and humidome methodology were used to analyze impact of tank mixtures and irrigation on dicamba volatility. The introduction of dicamba-resistant (DR) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) followed by a label allowing over-the-top applications of dicamba in the 2017 provided growers an additional option for broadleaf weed control. Increases in weed resistance have led to the development of new herbicide-resistant crop technologies, namely the Roundup Ready Xtend® and EnlistTM weed control systems. These new technologies provide resistance to applications of the synthetic auxins dicamba or 2,4-D, respectively, in traited cotton or soybean. It is unknown if there is any resistance to other herbicides within the synthetic auxin group (WSSA Group 4) in these traited crops. Dicamba injury to sensitive soybean and other broadleaf crops due to drift is a major issue and label restrictions have been created to mitigate dicamba drift. One restriction is the mandated use of low drift nozzles to spray dicamba; these nozzles produce larger droplets and minimize the production of driftable fines. Field studies were conducted to test three application methods for applying antagonistic herbicide combinations: 1) tank mix (TMX), 2) mix-in-line (MIL), and 3) separate boom (SPB). Sethoxydim applied with bentazon, glyphosate applied with dicamba or 2,4-D, and clethodim applied with dicamba or 2,4-D had higher efficacy when applied using the SPB method. Antagonism of all the herbicide combinations above was observed when applied using the TMX and MIL methods. In some cases, antagonism was avoided when using the SPB method. In research conducted using indeterminate soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], fourteen injury criteria observed following dicamba at 0.6 to 280 g ae ha-1 (1/1000 to ½ of 560 g ha-1 use rate) were rated using a scale of 0= no injury, 1= slight, 2= slight to moderate, 3= moderate, 4= moderate to severe, and 5= severe. Studies evaluated impact of dicamba, 2,4-D, and glyphosate at reduced rates to sweetpotato at root formation (RF) and development (RD) growth stages. For DGA salt of dicamba at RF, glyphosate plus dicamba at 1/10x reduced storage root number 42%, canner grade yield 33%, and total yield 36%. With choline salt of 2,4-D at RF, storage root number compared to the non-treated (6.5) was reduced with glyphosate alone at 1/100x (5.1), 2,4-D alone at 1/250x (5.1), and glyphosate plus 2,4-D applied at 1/10 (4.2) and 1/1000x (5). Onarm research was conducted in 2011 and 2012 to determine the postemergence and residual control by dicamba of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats.). Preemergence dicamba at 0, 0.28, 0.56, and 1.1 kg ae ha-1 and 0.07 kg ae ha-1 flumioxazin was applied at 30, 15 and 0 days prior to planting. Postemergence dicamba at 0.28, 0.56, and 1.1 kg ae ha-1 with and without 0.84 kg ae ha-1 glyphosate was applied to 5, 10 and 15 cm Palmer amaranth. Peas (Pisum sativum L. Var Alaska) were allowed to absorb calcium and magnesium chloride for 8 hours and then were germinated in a potassium phosphate buffer pH 6.5 for 40 hours. Peas were then treated with 0, 0.1, 0.3, or 0.5 ppm dicamba (3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid) and harvested at 24, 48, and 72 hour intervals. The following determinations were recorded: root elongation, nuclear volume, and anatomical modifications.
