The Construction Of Character And Authenticity On Rupaul's Drag Race, Carli Pickett
The Construction Of Character And Authenticity On Rupaul's Drag Race, Carli Pickett
University Honors Theses
One of the most common instructions delivered to the drag queens competing on RuPaul's Drag Race is to show their "true self." At first glance, RuPaul's Drag Race foregrounds authenticity and individuality, but it does so through a constructed lens that shapes its contestants into characters. While storylines and characterizations on the show are necessarily informed by the queen's actions, they are heavily shaped by editing.
In this essay, I will be exploring the ways in which authenticity manifests itself throughout several seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race. Each episode of Season Seven, Eight and Nine was watched with special …
Diverse Characterization: The Importance Of Inclusive Protagonists And Authors For Adolescents In Diverse Communities, Trista Straube
Diverse Characterization: The Importance Of Inclusive Protagonists And Authors For Adolescents In Diverse Communities, Trista Straube
Masters Theses
Despite continuous efforts to increase comprehension and success for students of diverse backgrounds there is a major underrepresentation of these communities in literary applications. Literary devices within public institutions should celebrate diversity in race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, culture, and physical and mental ability. It is important, in young adult development, that students have literature that reflects similarities in their personal lives. This thesis will serve to prove that literature pursued in public education should be selected based on the relatability of the students enrolled in the institution and inclusivity to the student population. When selecting relatable texts, …
A Characterization Of The Medical-Legal Partnership (Mlp) Of Nebraska Medicine, Jordan Pieper
A Characterization Of The Medical-Legal Partnership (Mlp) Of Nebraska Medicine, Jordan Pieper
Capstone Experience
This research study was completed at Legal Aid of Nebraska’s Health, Education, and Law Project through the partnership it has formed working with Nebraska Medicine and Iowa Legal Aid. Traditionally, health and disease have always been viewed exclusively as "healthcare" issues. But with healthcare consistently growing towards holistic approaches to help patients, we now know there are deeper, structural conditions of society that can act as strong driving forces of a person's poor daily living conditions that can negatively impact health. The importance of a Medical-Legal Partnership is that it considers a patient's social determinants of health (SDHs). The goal …
Characterization Of Human Muscle Extracellular Matrix, Lauren Klaire Wilson
Characterization Of Human Muscle Extracellular Matrix, Lauren Klaire Wilson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The performance of extracellular matrix (ECM) biological scaffolds for the treatment of volumetric muscle loss (VML) has shown promising results with regenerating native muscle in animal models and human patients. However, the limitations of these scaffolds include non-specific characteristics based on the original parameters of the muscle that is lost and this is why our group chose to characterize human skeletal ECM. By understanding the characteristics of the native human skeletal ECM, more desired queues for the biological scaffolds being used to treat VML can be provided. Upper limb and lower limb skeletal muscles were commercially obtained, decellularized using common …
Connections Between Voice And Design In Puppetry: A Case-Study, Ryan Skiles
Connections Between Voice And Design In Puppetry: A Case-Study, Ryan Skiles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Puppets have been entertaining, educating, and mesmerizing American audiences since the birth of our nation. Both in live theatrical events and TV/film, audiences have watched puppeteers bring their puppet characters to life with clever voice quality choices, unique characterizations, and vivid visual designs. This thesis is a case study that first borrows insight from cartoon character designers, animators, and voiceover actors to provide considerations for voice quality choices, characterizations, and design elements when creating a new puppet character. It then investigates the connections that exist between those three elements once a puppet is fully realized. In order to identify these …
Characterization Of Corneal Biomechanics Using Customized Atomic Force Microscopy Techniques, Janice Maxine Dias
Characterization Of Corneal Biomechanics Using Customized Atomic Force Microscopy Techniques, Janice Maxine Dias
Open Access Dissertations
Corneal biomechanics has become an increasingly important field within ophthalmology. Striving to establish a relationship between corneal physiological structure and function, corneal biomechanics is an objective, quantitative measure that aids in the development and improvement of diagnostic and therapeutic methods for corneal-related diseases. The goal of this project was to advance the technology of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) as a suitable characterization technique within the field of corneal biomechanics. The studies of this project include the development of AFM instrumentation, experimental techniques, and models to measure the elastic, viscoelastic, and poroelastic properties of the cornea in situ. Such developed instrumentation, …
Postcolonial Trauma Narratives: Traumatic Historiography And Identity In Amitav Ghosh's The Calcutta Chromosome, Jennifer Olive
Postcolonial Trauma Narratives: Traumatic Historiography And Identity In Amitav Ghosh's The Calcutta Chromosome, Jennifer Olive
English Theses
The applicability of trauma studies within an examination of postcolonial literature has been a contested topic for scholars in both fields. Additionally, scholarship regarding Amitav Ghosh’s postcolonial science fiction novel The Calcutta Chromosome encourages various readings of the novel but does not currently offer a cohesive examination of all its thematic disciplines and stylistic elements. Through an examination of this postcolonial novel, I will provide a more holistic reading of the novel through an application of trauma studies that explores its representation of the internal postcolonial conflict regarding Western and non-Western historiographies. My analysis will focus on the lexical, character, …
From Martyrs To Mothers To Chick In Choos: The Medieval Female Body And American Women's Popular Literature, Gina M. Sully
From Martyrs To Mothers To Chick In Choos: The Medieval Female Body And American Women's Popular Literature, Gina M. Sully
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Placing the generic conventions of medieval hagiography, Nina Baym's insights about nineteenth-century American sentimental fiction's overplot, and contemporary American women's popular literature into tension illuminates some important commonalities. First, biographers of the medieval virgin saints and authors of contemporary American women's popular literature deploy the same overplot that Baym identifies as characteristic of American women's nineteenth-century popular fiction. Second, in order to define feminine virtue and establish the virtue of their protagonists, nineteenth-century and post-millennial American women writers rework the contrastive tropes by which hagiographers establish their heroines' virtue. Third, struggles for ascendance in the domestic realm gesture toward its …
Characterization: A Content Analysis Of Pulitzer-Awarded And Traditional Features, Linda Janet Tobler
Characterization: A Content Analysis Of Pulitzer-Awarded And Traditional Features, Linda Janet Tobler
Theses and Dissertations
Characterization in Pulitzer-awarded features and traditional features was measured using a characterization typology developed by the author. Although some of the results were statistically constrained by a small n, those results which were statistically significant reflect that what separates Pulitzer-winning features from regular features are those elements of characterization particular to scene: a character's distinctive physical characteristics, clothing and possessions; the setting and environment as it defines a character; a physical description of character that is not lineament nor habitual posture or expression but bodily appearance in the immediate moment; a character's movements and actions, facial expressions, words, and …

Characterization And Comparative Analysis Of Adolescents Admitted To Therapeutic Wilderness Programs And More Traditional Treatment Settings, Mayer M. Jeppson
Characterization And Comparative Analysis Of Adolescents Admitted To Therapeutic Wilderness Programs And More Traditional Treatment Settings, Mayer M. Jeppson
Theses and Dissertations
Therapeutic Wilderness Programs (TWP) are a fast growing segment of the adolescent treatment arena. Scientific literature on TWPs shows that researchers have skipped the natural step of identifying the population of adolescents admitted for treatment. To fill the gap in TWP research, this archival study identified demographic features and distinctive foundational aspects that represent the TWP treatment population. Comparison samples were taken from two TWPs, two residential treatment centers (RTC) and an outpatient therapy clinic (OP). At each of the five sites, basic descriptive data from client records were combined to represent multiple characterizing indexes that are in common usage …
Characterization Of The Pleiotropic Effects Of The Drosophila Gene Mushroom Body Miniature B, Michael Louis Ginsburg
Characterization Of The Pleiotropic Effects Of The Drosophila Gene Mushroom Body Miniature B, Michael Louis Ginsburg
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The mushroom body miniature B ( mbmB) mutation has documented defects in adult mushroom body anatomy, olfactory memory and female fertility. In this thesis I report that mbmB mutants also have reduced viability and growth rate. I further demonstrate, using the mushroom body cell marker dachshund, that loss of mbmB function does not affect the early development of mushroom body neuroectoderm and neuroblasts. Additionally, I found the observed delay in growth and reduced viability were not manifested during embryonic development; Courtship behavior assays and immunohistochemical techniques were used to investigate causes of mbmB female sterility. Courtship involving mbmB females is …
