Islands In The Sun: Lawfare And Great-Power Competition In The Indo-Pacific, Clayton T. Russo
Islands In The Sun: Lawfare And Great-Power Competition In The Indo-Pacific, Clayton T. Russo
MSU Graduate Theses
This thesis examines the U.S.-Japan Mutual Defense Treaty and its future considering the recent developments in the international security environment. The 2018 National Defense Strategy brought back an emphasis on Great Power Competition, fundamentally transforming the role of U.S. alliances to address new challenges. In the 2021 budget, the Pacific Deterrence Initiative (PDI) has prioritized the People’s Republic of China as the number one pacing threat to theUnited States, drastically shifting international focus away from the Middle East and towards East Asia. In conjunction with funding new capabilities through the PDI, the U.S. will need to conceive new legal doctrines …

Benjamin Smith Lyman: Geologist At The Intersection Of Hokkaido, Japan, And The United States, Benjamin Ashby
Masters Theses
Benjamin Smith Lyman was a geologist from Northampton, Massachusetts, who was contracted by the Japanese government in 1872 to carry out coal surveys on the island of Hokkaidō 北海道. What started out as a standard geological survey, quickly evolved into a lifelong interest in Japan for Lyman. The large collection of letters, books, photographs, and other documents housed under the Benjamin Smith Lyman Collection at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, serve as a primary source on both early relations between the Japanese and the West and the beginnings of the large network of academic writings which today can be classified …
Rethinking The War On Drugs, Brandi Kalmbach
Rethinking The War On Drugs, Brandi Kalmbach
Global Honors Theses
The War on Drugs is a battle that has been fought within the United States for fifty years now; however, it began well before the declaration of war made by President Nixon in 1971. Since even before the prohibition era one century ago, the United States has struggled with drug addiction. Research shows that our current day results have actually digressed since the initial declaration of the war on drugs, and yet, the same methods are still being implemented over and over, despite our widespread awareness of its failure. The main failure is declaring a war against drugs. There is …
Reiki For Recovery: Incorporating Japanese Health Practices To Increase Contemporary Resiliency In American Health, Leif Peterson
Reiki For Recovery: Incorporating Japanese Health Practices To Increase Contemporary Resiliency In American Health, Leif Peterson
Master's Projects and Capstones
The Japanese health practice of Reiki attempts to maximize the latent ability of the human system to heal itself. The Reiki system, established over a century ago, combines multiple Asian health traditions, experimenting with practices that maximize the natural processes of the body to perform its own repairs. Reiki encourages healthy behaviors that balance the mind and body, return the human system to a lowered stress level, and allow for an optimal recovery state for the patient. This paper illustrates how this Japanese health-affirming method can be integrated and utilized within existing health and medical practices. An area that is …
Finding Peace: Aging, Solidarity, And Min-Iren, Aaron Hames
Finding Peace: Aging, Solidarity, And Min-Iren, Aaron Hames
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an ethnography of elderly life in Japan. Aging populations present serious challenges to societies in the provision of care and support for the elderly. As household sizes shrink and kin disperses, networks of support and informal care premised on familial involvement may no longer suffice. States encounter budgetary strains as the proportion of workers to elderly skews toward the latter. In Japan, these problems are present and have been exacerbated by shortages of professional care workers and long-term facilities for the elderly. However, the elderly have proved strategic and adaptive in relation to population aging in other …

Neon Genesis Evangelion And Struggles In Growing Up, Grenfell Noah Cowper
Standard Theses
This thesis is an exploration of how the popular 1995 anime series, Neon Genesis Evangelion, portrays what it is like for Japanese teenagers to grow up and find their place in the world. It is a close look at two of the main characters’ identity and relationship developments through the lens of research in the cultural psychology of Japanese youth. In the analysis, special emphasis is placed on the characters’ concrete struggles, movement in identity development stages, and the role of relationships and interdependence in their identity development.
The Divergence Of Gay Rights In Taiwan, South Korea, And Japan, Evan Barker
The Divergence Of Gay Rights In Taiwan, South Korea, And Japan, Evan Barker
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This is a comparative study between Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan that explores the differences of each society's values and politics to understand their current gay rights record. In light of Taiwan's legalization of marriage equality in 2019, this study compares all three countries to find the differences that possibly caused this progression of gay rights in Taiwan, but not in South Korea and Japan, which are notorious for their apathy toward the LGBTQ community.
The United States And Its Coercive Democratization Attempts In Japan And Iraq, Noah Shepardson
The United States And Its Coercive Democratization Attempts In Japan And Iraq, Noah Shepardson
College Honors Program
The United States engaged in coercive democratization (bringing democracy to a country via coercive measures such as occupation) endeavors in both Japan and Iraq, achieving drastically different results. The democratization of Japan is typically regarded as the gold standard of coercive democratization due to Japan’s rapid social and economic development following the United States’ occupation of the country in the years after World War II. The United States’ democratization effort in Iraq, on the other hand, has failed to create such prosperous conditions and has arguably made Iraq more unstable. This thesis seeks to identify why coercive democratization worked in …
Bringing The Japanese Occupation Of Korea To High School Classrooms, Bree Rosenberger
Bringing The Japanese Occupation Of Korea To High School Classrooms, Bree Rosenberger
Honors Projects
Bringing the Japanese Occupation of Korea to High School Classrooms is a set of three units on the occupation, designed using the Inquiry Design Model from the C3 Teachers. Each unit corresponds to a major time period in the occupation; unit one covers 1876-1919, unit two 1919-1931, and unit three 1931-1945. This project aimed to provide a way to teach the occupation in a manner friendly to high school students and presents an opportunity to align content more fully with the philosophy of social studies education. Finally, it presents a way to teach East Asian history actually from an East …
Winning Investment: The Strategic Implications Of The Growth Of Sabermetrics In Japanese Baseball, David Trent Pagliarini
Winning Investment: The Strategic Implications Of The Growth Of Sabermetrics In Japanese Baseball, David Trent Pagliarini
Senior Theses
This thesis examines Japanese baseball and how the use of analytics and statistical research has been implemented into Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), compared to its North American counterpart, Major League Baseball (MLB). Due to the large financial implications of the MLB, teams have fully adopted the use of advanced metrics to find competitive disparities and advantages in roster construction, game strategies, and player development. Because of the long history attached to baseball in Japan, many cultural differences have adapted the game and recently slowed the growth of sabermetrics. While the NPB is beginning to understand the competitive value that analytics …
This New Colossus, Sean M. Ardor
This New Colossus, Sean M. Ardor
Theses and Dissertations
This New Colossus was an original work of theater which I conceived, wrote, designed, directed, and performed four times over three consecutive evenings in mid-November 2019 at the Center for Performance Experiment in Columbia, South Carolina (A video recording of this performance is included in my thesis submission). This New Colossus tells the a story of an unnamed Grandfather and his Grandson struggling against a fictional communist government of the United States during its rise in the 1930's and its fall in the 1970's. The work was inspired by the lives of 20th century leftist revolutionaries, the poetry of Walt …
Abenomics’ Effect On Gender Inequality In Japanese Society And The Workplace, Arianna C. Johnson
Abenomics’ Effect On Gender Inequality In Japanese Society And The Workplace, Arianna C. Johnson
Honors College Theses
In this study, I determine the extent to which Japan’s shrinking workforce population has been affected by gender roles. Many Asian countries are experiencing a prominent decline in birth rate and population, which has increased global interest in these issues. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Japanese government officials have eagerly responded, pushing Japanese women into the labor force as a possible solution. However, this decision has unanticipated drawbacks, which require officials to address Japanese women’s concerns in and outside of the workplace. I argue that the Japanese government will have more success by addressing these needs, creating a more gender-equal …
Varieties Of Transnational Life: Brazilian Nikkeis’ Changing Cross-Border Ties With Two Homelands, Hiroyuki Shibata
Varieties Of Transnational Life: Brazilian Nikkeis’ Changing Cross-Border Ties With Two Homelands, Hiroyuki Shibata
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores the varieties of Brazilian Nikkei’s – Japanese emigrants to Brazil and their descendants – transnational lives throughout a century of their migration history. I propose an interactive process approach to migrant transnationalism to understand the divergence of Brazilian Nikkeis’ transnational lives between their two homelands, Japan and Brazil. First, I focus on the four macro-institutional contexts: 1) positions and development patterns of sending and receiving states within the international state system; the infrastructural power of states, more concretely 2) the diasporic bureaucracy of sending states and 3) the incorporative power of receiving states; and 4) the mobilizing …

Stranger’S Window, Nation’S Mirror, Kyoko Hamaguchi
Theses and Dissertations
In this text, I consider my identity as a Japanese immigrant in the United States during a global pandemic and its impact on my understanding of home as a liminal space. In particular, I discuss notions of home in relation to my work as an artist including two works that utilize the home-sharing platform Airbnb and three works that deal with the dichotomy of inside and outside.
Cultural Protest Music From The Early Twentieth Century And Beyond, Sarah Kadtke
Cultural Protest Music From The Early Twentieth Century And Beyond, Sarah Kadtke
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
My undergraduate thesis inspects the intersection that occurs when social advocacy and music combine to create protest music. It looks in depth towards three distinct cultures - that of the Aboriginal Australian, native Irish, and Japanese - to see how the nuanced issues present in those societies shapes the protest music that comes out of them. My thesis also examines the consequences brought about by this music, and how it goes on to shape the resolutions to these issues.
A Comparative Perspective On Colonial Influence In The Effectiveness Of Foreign Aid In South Korea And Algeria, Viv Daniel
Honors Projects
South Korea and Algeria are both formerly colonized nations with a history of dependence on foreign aid. Their former colonizers, Japan and France respectively, collaborated closely throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, despite colonial linkages and similarities in early developmental trajectories, South Korea has grown into a donating member of the OECD and one of the world’s largest economies, while Algeria continues to struggle both economically and politically. This paper engages existing literature on postcolonial development and foreign aid by arguing that the attitudes towards colonization and the motivations for undertaking it on the part …

This paper will explore the exchange of culture and the topic of cultural appropriation. Using the Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela as a case study, it will discuss the way in which he was inspired by Japanese culture and Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Rei Kawakubo– three Japanese fashion designers who first appeared in Paris in the 1970’s and 80’s.
