INTRODUCTION: Air pollution is a major public health concern. Reducing air pollution exposure can reduce the burden of disease and improve cardiovascular and respiratory health. Traffic related air pollution (TRAP) is a significant contributor to air pollution globally. TRAP and physical activity have a dynamic relationship with interacting and opposing effects that are not fully understood.
AIM: This study investigates the relationship between physical activity and exposure to TRAP by identifying the metabolic pathways associated with important TRAP components including Black Carbon (BC), Ozone (O3), Fine Particulate Matter
METHODS: Saliva samples were collected from 57 study participants playing sports outdoors …
With A Little Help From My Friends: Determining The Role Of Physical Activity And Belonging In Retention Of First-Year University Students, Bryson Kelly
Master's Theses
There exists an issue facing colleges and universities across the United States. Roughly 29% of first-year students do not return for their second year of school. Previous research has shown a significant relationship between a student’s sense of belonging or fit within the university and their decision to continue enrollment (retention). Physical activity has also been shown to have a significant relationship with a sense of belonging. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine if physical activity and sense of belonging predict retention of university students from their first year to their second year using a Relationships …

Examination Of Daily Steps In People With Parkinson’S Disease & Stroke: Two Steps Forward, Reed Handlery
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the well-known health benefits associated with physical activity (PA), the majority of people with Parkinson’s disease (pwPD) and people with stroke do not meet national PA guidelines. As a result, these two groups of people are at increased risk for development of cardiovascular disease, additional disability and death.
Walking as a mode of PA has been shown to improve the health of both pwPD and people with stroke. In fact, a step count of >6000 steps per day is related to a decreased risk of subsequent cardiovascular events in people with stroke. Daily walking is also strongly recommended by …
Characterizing Patterns Of Adherence To Physical Activity Goals In Behavioral Weight Control, Melissa Lee Stansbury
Characterizing Patterns Of Adherence To Physical Activity Goals In Behavioral Weight Control, Melissa Lee Stansbury
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Many individuals fall short of the physical activity (PA) goals provided during lifestyle programs, and there is considerable variability in weight loss response and adherence to recommendations for behavior change. Weight loss response within the early weeks of program initiation predicts future weight loss success; however, little is known about what distinguishes those who respond well to treatment from those who fail to respond. Exposing the behavioral patterns which underlie weight loss response may point towards targets for treatment optimization. The purpose of this study was to (1) characterize individuals with distinct patterns of adherence to PA goals during …
Effects Of A Physical Activity Intervention On The Stress Reduction Of Underserved Adolescent Youth, Gwenyth C. Asbury
Effects Of A Physical Activity Intervention On The Stress Reduction Of Underserved Adolescent Youth, Gwenyth C. Asbury
Senior Theses
Stress levels of American teenagers are rising. Studies show that teens are reporting higher stress levels than what they perceive to be healthy and that these levels are higher than the levels of perceived stress reported by adults (APA, 2013). In addition to reporting unhealthy levels of stress, adolescents are reporting feeling overwhelmed and depressed due to their stress (APA, 2013). These findings are especially true for underserved adolescents who are more likely to have exposure to violence, discrimination, racism and conditions of poverty in addition to experiencing the typical stressors associated with adolescence (American Academy of Child and Adolescent …

Active Transportation And Health: Understanding The Impact Of Transportation-Related Physical Activity On Health, Sina Famili
Civil Engineering Dissertations
Car-oriented infrastructure in the U.S. leads to physically inactive lifestyles and negative health outcomes. To promote physical activity, public health officials encourage active transportation, namely biking and walking on daily trips. Previous studies proved that both perceived or self-assessed and objective health measures should be used to understand individuals’ health status. Therefore, this study uses the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data to understand the associations between perceived health and modal trip features including the number of trips, trip distance, and duration for auto, public transit, walk, and bike trips. Regarding the objective health, this dissertation uses one-week walking activities …
Incorporating Physical Activity In Mental Health Intervention Service Delivery: School Psychologists’ Perspectives, Scott Greenspan
Incorporating Physical Activity In Mental Health Intervention Service Delivery: School Psychologists’ Perspectives, Scott Greenspan
Doctoral Dissertations
Epidemiological data posits that youth in the United States (US) experience significant mental health concerns. Approximately 10% of youth meet criteria for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnoses (Danielson, Bitsko, Ghandour, Holbrook, & Blumberg, 2018) and approximately 7% of youth have a behavioral conduct problem or anxiety (Ghandour et al., 2018). Literature continues to suggest that physical activity is a viable modality in supporting the mental health of youth (e.g., Ahn & Fedewa, 2011; Annesi, 2005; Biddle et al., 2018). While it is recommended that youth achieve one hour of physical activity daily (Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee [PAGC], 2018), …

Psychological Factors Related To Physical Activity In Adult Congenital Heart Disease, Tyler Pendleton
Dissertations
Adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) are a new and growing medical population. While medical interventions previously focused on reducing rates of infant mortality, current research suggests increased risk of premature mortality in ACHD may be partially due to acquired cardiovascular disease. One lifestyle intervention to reduce acquired cardiovascular risk is physical activity. Physical activity has been supported in the research as a safe, efficacious, and tolerable intervention for many ACHD; however, most patients do not engage in recommended levels of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate psychological factors related to physical activity in ACHD. Participants …

The Effects Of Acute Exercise And Psychological Stress On Episodic Memory, Lauren Koehler
The Effects Of Acute Exercise And Psychological Stress On Episodic Memory, Lauren Koehler
Honors Theses
Research has suggested that exercise has an effect on memory function. Studies have also shown that exercise mitigates the effects of stress. The relationship between exercise and stress in regard to memory function is noteworthy. There has been little research on this relationship in young adults. This thesis discusses the effects of acute exercise on the episodic memory of young adults when they are exposed to a psychosocial stressor. The results of the research study show that acute aerobic exercise before memory encoding or consolidation was not associated with memory function after exposure to a stressor. Future research in this …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Engaging in physical activity is essential to one’s well-being, especially for a child since their body is still in the developing stages. This senior capstone research project examines the benefits of integrating physical activity in the classroom. Since there is less emphasis on being physically active, the value of physical activity decreases over time. For the time being, since sedentary lifestyles have been promoted, this put many children at a disadvantage. Not only do these lifestyles change in children’s lives, they also affect their academic performance as well. The results indicate that when students are encouraged to be more physically …
