Succeeding under high pressure is highly beneficial not only for humans, but also for

non-human animals. I studied a captive colony of socially-living tufted capuchin monkeys as a model species to examine performance failure (or “choking”) under pressure and to see if endogenous levels of hormones correlated with likelihood to fail under high pressure. I also explored if cortisol and testosterone interacted under non-competitive paradigms of stress. I found that capuchin monkeys differed significantly in reactions to acute pressure when performing a cognitive task, with some individuals performing better and some performing worse under pressure. The ventromedial aspect of the prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is an evolutionarily conserved region of the frontal lobe with primary roles in social processing and emotional regulation. During particularly stressful situations, neurons of the vmPFC are recruited and, through dynamic circuit-based activity patterns, help the organism integrate pertinent sensory cues and act in a context-specific manner. In the dissertation that follows, I discuss investigations of vmPFC neural and immune system activity as they confer resilience and susceptibility, respectively, to the effects of acute social defeat stress in male Syrian hamsters. Hunger is an essential human process and develops through both physiological and neurological mechanisms. Hunger is driven by secretion of molecules and hypothalamic neural circuits that stimulate appetite and promote food intake. Pathways to hunger may also be influenced by higher-order cognitive and emotional processes to ultimately impact food intake and eating behavior. For example, increased symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, and hostility (hereby referred to as “hostile negative affect”) are suggested to increase hunger and food intake. This research study describes the potential relationship between perceived high stress levels and failure in high-stakes performance testing in a baccalaureate undergraduate nursing environment. In addition, it determines if there is a marked difference between perceived stress levels in accelerated and traditional students. To answer these questions, the researcher administered the Cohen’s self-report Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to baccalaureate nursing students fifteen minutes before high-stakes performance skills competency testing. Of 102 voluntary participants, 33 were of the accelerated nursing track and 69 were of the traditional track. Encompassing both groups, nine students failed the skills competency test.

The relatively new phenomenon of binge watching presents a dramatic shift from the norm of traditional television viewing. However, is this ubiquitously popular media marathon that contains negative connotations really bad for you? A survey administered to 157 television binge-watchers identified the role of stress and self-control in influencing both the gratifications sought and the consequences of binge watching through the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis. The literature on mindfulness supports a distinction between two components of non-judgmental acceptance and directed attention. The present research analyzed whether there are distinct differences in attentional capabilities or affect between mindfulness inductions which differed in either including only directed attention or directed attention and non-judgmental acceptance. I hypothesized that the acceptance component of mindfulness would increase participants sustained attentional capabilities relative to a control condition; furthermore, I hypothesized that the non-judgmental acceptance component of mindfulness would lead to significant increases in positive affect and decreases in negative affect relative to control. Hair cortisol content (HCC) is a novel biomarker that uniquely captures retrospective systemic cortisol exposure. This thesis aimed to assess how different hair growth rates effect HCC timelines in Cushing’s and Addison’s patients, investigate the relationship between HCC and age, puberty, sex and BMI in healthy children and adolescents, and assess novel methods to improve cortisol extraction and recovery. Retrospective HCC timelines derived from a 0.75 cm/month growth rate best matched 50% of patients’ medical records rather than the historically assumed 1 cm/month. HCC correlated positively with age (p<0.0001), puberty status (p<0.001), and BMI (p<0.01) in males and females 7-17 years old. Nitrogen evaporation resulted in greater cortisol recovery than air evaporation (p=0.0003), and hair digestion using NaOH resulted in more rapid extraction of cortisol. These results provide incremental improvements to previous methods and assumptions for HCC analysis and elucidate normal HCC changes in children and adolescents.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) often leads to the development of epilepsy, especially with the occurrence of stressful events. Stressors increase the levels of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in the amygdala, which can be damaged by the secondary effects of TBI. It is hypothesized that the activity of CRF receptor type 1 (CRFR₁) in the amygdala is altered post-TBI and supports the generation of epileptiform waves, namely high-frequency oscillations (HFOs). Visual primes have been shown to reduce these detrimental eating behaviors. The present study sought to determine if a fitbit would prime healthy eating behaviors in stressful situations.
