Ballet De La Nuit: Staging The Absolute Monarchy Of Louis Xiv, Sarah Curtis Lysgaard

Master's Theses

This thesis researches the ballet de cour spectacles of the seventeenth century French court, with a careful examination of the political and social importance of such spectacles in anticipation of reconstructing Louis XIV’s Ballet de la Nuit (Ballet of the Night), originally performed February 23, 1653 at the Louvre’s Salle de Petit Bourbon. This ballet de cour was a visual spectacle that combined music, dance, poetry, and allegory with elaborate staging and costumes. Such spectacles were first produced in France during the sixteenth century and involved the royal court not only as spectators but also as performers. The Ballet de …

The Impact Of Patronage On Contemporary Visual Arts, Emily Coats

Honors College Theses

Patronage is vital to the art world and the success and notoriety of its artists. From straightforward patronage during the Renaissance of the Medici Family, the independent artists of modernism, to contemporary crowdfunding, it is important to note the changes in the art world throughout history to truly understand how artists and patrons have grown and continue to evolve in our contemporary society. Considering how patronage has changed and adapted throughout history and understanding the influence it has, not only allows a deeper understanding of the art world but also the world’s culture.

Powerful Alliances: A Study Of International Trade, Material Culture, And Family Ties In Jan Van Eyck’S Arnolfini Portrait, Brianna Cooney

Art and Art History

This paper examines the intricate and interrelated relationships among Giovanni Arnolfini, Jan van Eyck, and Duke Philip the Good through the analysis of conspicuous consumption, political networking, mercantile trade, and economic authority. Arnolfini sought to emulate Duke Philip the Good and construct a visual representation of his new social identity as a member of the court. Arnolfini used the portrait and his connections to the court painter, to display his material culture and increase his position in society. The material objects of wealth displayed throughout demonstrate Arnolfini’s skill and capability as a merchant, while the religious symbolism reinforces his trustworthiness …

Senior Projects Spring 2019

Senior Project submitted to The Division of Arts of Bard College.

This body of work, submitted to Bard College’s Division of Art History and Visual Culture, serves to add to the zeitgeist of authors and artist who oppose the previously circulated narrative of African Americans: Their histories, their cultural heritage, their place in American society, and the effects of the presupposed White narrative that has been imposed on the Black body. I will be focusing on African American artists of the twentieth-century, who have shown their dedication and activism through their work, to dismantle the fascist structure of the American …

Women's Work: Materializing Feminist Thought In Lucy Lippard's C.7,500 Exhibition, Francesca Felicella Jan 2019

Women's Work: Materializing Feminist Thought In Lucy Lippard's C.7,500 Exhibition, Francesca Felicella

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis aims to explore the c.7,500 exhibition curated by Lucy Lippard as a culminating point for Lippard's activism in the arts, and more specifically, women's representation in conceptualism. Understanding Lippard's political involvement within the arts and the networks established before c.7,500 further illuminates the activist approach of an all-women's art show. Throughout Lippard's career, she has advanced the exposure of women artists through her curatorial endeavors and written criticism. Her Numbers series is continuously referenced today though little documentation of each show has been easily accessible. By looking at ephemeral artifacts and artworks from c.7,500 I aim to establish …

Islamic Ceramics, Indelible Creations: Assessing And Preserving The Scripps Collection, Josephine Ren

Scripps Senior Theses

This research project examines and documents the collection of Islamic ceramics at Scripps College from an art conservation standpoint. The main objectives were to establish provenance for these objects, assess their current conditions, propose recommendations for future preservation, and discuss the importance of preventive conservation and general collections care methods. Based on my survey and research, I demonstrated which objects in particular should be prioritized due to their states of conservation and significant educational value. Such objects raise further points of departure regarding authenticity and conservation ethics.

Peter Fuller, Modern Painters And The Sensation Exhibition, James Alexander Brown Jan 2019

Peter Fuller, Modern Painters And The Sensation Exhibition, James Alexander Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis investigates the decline of a particular form of art criticism, embodied by the English art critic and editor, Peter Fuller. Fuller’s criticism developed out of a Kantian tradition, presenting judgements of objective worth arrived at through the exercise of taste, and championed what he described as the British or English Romantic landscape tradition. Central to the decline was the displacement of art criticism and the art critic in the creation and articulation of value in art worlds. Through a historiographical study of Modern Painters, the publication founded by Fuller in 1988, the thesis explores the changing relationship between …
