Identifying Factors Associated With Lying Behavior And Mastitis In Organic Dairy Cows, Victoria Couture Dec 2018

Identifying Factors Associated With Lying Behavior And Mastitis In Organic Dairy Cows, Victoria Couture

Masters Theses

Dairy cow health and welfare recommendations based on lying behavior and udder health are standardized in systems that rely on confined housing. However, factors may influence mastitis and behavior differently under organic pasture systems, due to changes in time budgets and treatment methods. Our objectives were to 1) determine the association of lying behaviors with cow-level factors, including milk yield, DIM, and parity when cows are managed under two organic management systems 2) identify probability of subclinical mastitis on organic farms in the southeastern region of the US and 3) characterize frequency and probability of mastitis-causing organisms by season, parity, …

Virulence Characteristics And Genetic Diversity Of Staphylococcus Aureus Isolates From Cases Of Bovine Mastitis In Eastern Tennessee., Jacqueline M. Vaughn Aug 2018

Virulence Characteristics And Genetic Diversity Of Staphylococcus Aureus Isolates From Cases Of Bovine Mastitis In Eastern Tennessee., Jacqueline M. Vaughn

Masters Theses

Staphylococcus aureus is an important zoonotic mastitis pathogen that has significant effects on animal and human health. S. aureus is also a foodborne pathogen that causes food poisoning through its diverse enterotoxins. Some studies showed that S. aureus strains that cause infection in a particular host are genetically distinct and are host specific, although most strains are believed to be infective to a wide range of host species. However, there are no clearly defined clonal patterns of S. aureus that possess certain virulence factors responsible for causing a disease. The objectives of this study were: 1) evaluate clonal diversity of …

Vitamin D, Calcium, And Dairy Consumption And Risk Of Early Menopause, Alexandra C. Purdue-Smithe Jul 2018

Vitamin D, Calcium, And Dairy Consumption And Risk Of Early Menopause, Alexandra C. Purdue-Smithe

Doctoral Dissertations

Early menopause, defined as the cessation of ovarian function before the age of 45, affects roughly 10% of women in Western populations. Current research suggests that women who experience early menopause are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other adverse health outcomes. Early menopause may also have substantial financial and psychological consequences for family planning, particularly as women increasingly delay childbearing into the later reproductive years. Emerging research suggests that modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet may play an important role in ovarian aging. According to our review of the current biologic and epidemiologic literature in Chapter 1, vitamin …

Analyzing College Students' Perceptions Of The Dairy Industry Through A Dairy Farm Visit: A Convenience Sample Approach, Erin Nicole Allen May 2018

Analyzing College Students' Perceptions Of The Dairy Industry Through A Dairy Farm Visit: A Convenience Sample Approach, Erin Nicole Allen

Masters Theses

Potentially due to a lack of trust and limited communication between farmers and consumers, there is an issue of consumer misinformation about the dairy industry. Consumer perception is negatively impacting the industry and hurting dairy farmers across the country. Agritourism and dairy farm visits have had limited study. From the standpoint of consumer perception, today’s college students make up an intriguing study population. This generation, Generation Z, is in the process of developing their buying behaviors; they will eventually make up a significant portion of consumers with a great deal of buying power (Priporas, Stylos & Fotiadis, 2017). The purpose …

Genotypes And Phenotypes Of Staphylococci On Selected Dairy Farms In Vermont, Robert Mugabi Jan 2018

Genotypes And Phenotypes Of Staphylococci On Selected Dairy Farms In Vermont, Robert Mugabi

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

The genus Staphylococcus contains at least 47 species and 23 subspecies. Bacteria in this genus are ubiquitous; many are commensals on human and animal skin and can be opportunistic pathogens. In dairy cattle, staphylococci are the leading cause of intramammary infections (IMI) and mastitis. Mastitis is the inflammation of the mammary gland, and is one of the leading infectious diseases causing production losses in the dairy industry. Based on the ability to clot blood plasma in vitro, members of the genus can be divided into two groups: coagulase positive staphylococci (CPS) and coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS). In the dairy industry, …

The Historical Evaluation And Significance Of The Old Joerger Ranch, Martis Valley, California, Hope Caroline Schear

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

United States history is full of adventure and pioneering but building the regional histories of the nation allows one to dig deeper into what it took to make this country develop socially and economically. In the mid 1800’s California experienced a boom like never before. In 1848, mill workers found gold at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California, which led to a huge influx of people and population spike that changed California forever. Once the Gold Rush subsided, agriculture replaced gold in California as a wealth generator. Early settlers discovered that the mild climate of the region allows a wide variety …
