Transfer Student Experiences At Stanford University And The University Of California, Berkeley, Rachael Madison Dec 2017

Transfer Student Experiences At Stanford University And The University Of California, Berkeley, Rachael Madison

Master's Theses

Elite institutions have a long history of serving students from high socioeconomic status families. Transfer students who begin their college career at community colleges are typically from low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented minority status families. This population of students has historically been underrepresented at elite colleges. The purpose of this study was to examine the community college transfer student experience at two elite universities, one public and one private, and how institutional programs and structures affect the transfer student experience. The study gathered information from eight community college transfer students, four from each elite university, interviewed in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Four …

Breaking Invisibility: Transforming Working Conditions Of Adjunct Faculty In Technical Colleges Through Critical Advocacy Inquiry, Jacqueline Y. Taylor Dec 2017

Breaking Invisibility: Transforming Working Conditions Of Adjunct Faculty In Technical Colleges Through Critical Advocacy Inquiry, Jacqueline Y. Taylor

All Dissertations

Known as "invisible faculty," (Gappa & Leslie, 1993), adjunct or part-time, contingent instructors play a vital role in meeting the needs of two-year colleges. Adjunct faculty members teach over half of the United States' historically underserved college students (Center for Community College Student Engagement [CCCSE], 2014), and are therefore vital to student and college success. Moreover, 58% of all South Carolinian undergraduates attend one of the 16 technical colleges in the South Carolina Technical College System (South Carolina Technical College System [SCTCS], 2016). Additionally, 60% of the faculty members in the SCTCS are adjunct instructors (SCTCS, 2017). Researchers claim adjunct …

Factors Associated With Federal Student Loan Default Among Borrowers In A Statewide System Of Community And Technical Colleges., Brittany Inge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Community colleges serve as a gateway to higher education for millions of American college students. Open-door admission policies and federal student aid facilitate the access that two-year public institutions provide, particularly for students who are under-resourced or academically under-prepared for college. However, a substantial number of community college students who use federal student loans to pay for college ultimately fail to repay the loans, yielding negative consequences for borrowers, institutions, and taxpayers.

By employing a Hierarchical Generalized Linear Model (HGLM) this study investigates individual-level and institution-level factors associated with federal student loan default among borrowers who attended a two-year public …

Relationship Between Active Learning Methodologies And Community College Students’ Stem Course Grades, Cherish Christina Lesko Oct 2017

Relationship Between Active Learning Methodologies And Community College Students’ Stem Course Grades, Cherish Christina Lesko

Faculty Dissertations

Active learning methodologies (ALM) are associated with student success, but little research on this topic has been pursued at the community college level. At a local community college, students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses exhibited lower than average grades. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the use of ALM predicted STEM course grades while controlling for academic discipline, course level, and class size. The theoretical framework was Vygotsky’s social constructivism. Descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression were performed on data collected through an anonymous survey of 74 instructors of 272 courses during the 2016 …

The Effect Of Tuition On Graduation Rate At Community Colleges, Carter Brown Youmans Oct 2017

The Effect Of Tuition On Graduation Rate At Community Colleges, Carter Brown Youmans

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

The community college mission has long included open access through low tuition (Vaughan, 2006). Financial challenges for community college students threaten open access (Shannon & Smith, 2006). Paying tuition plays a part in a student’s ability to graduate. A community colleges’ success is measured in part by graduation rates. President Obama challenged all colleges, including community colleges, to increase their graduation rates 50% by the year 2020 (Obama, 2009). The current study analyzed whether public, community colleges’ tuitions predicted their graduation rates using recent data and if size of enrollment moderated the relations between tuition and graduation rate. A two-block, …

ETD Archive

This study examined if and to what extent selected institutional services and special learning and credit opportunities in the 2-year private, for-profit college sector and community colleges in the United States are related to race, socioeconomic status and urbanicity. The researcher evaluated whether the institutional services and special learning and credit opportunities available to students at these 1,479 institutions are stratified by the socioeconomic and racial characteristics of their student bodies and their local communities, by institutional control, by the institution’s degree of urbanization, and the student financial aid characteristics. The researcher also investigated the relationship among institutional services, special …

Internationalizing Community Colleges To Inspire Globally Competent Leaders, Miranda Morgan Jan 2017

Internationalizing Community Colleges To Inspire Globally Competent Leaders, Miranda Morgan

MA IDS Thesis Projects

All industries are becoming ever more intertwined with the global market, which means that the need for workers with a more globalized mental framework has become much more important. Unfortunately, in higher education institutions, there is a gap between students who have the ability to be in a school with comprehensive internationalized programs (internationalized curriculum, established international partnerships between schools, mission statement with internationalization emphasis, professor exchanges, and study abroad programs) and students who do not. Students who have limited access to internationalized programs are often low-income, first-generation, or returning community college students. This study proposes a comprehensive internationalized program …
