It Pays To Behave: Investigating Effective Classroom Management, Rei Massie

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus of this Capstone project is on improving the work ethic and engagement of students by reducing challenging behavior that comes with classroom transitions and management. This is an important issue for educators because when an instructor spends too much time redirecting students, a lot of crucial learning time can be lost. Consideration of the issue included the perspectives of the training and program specialist and child program assistants of the observed after school child care center. Based on the findings, action was taken to help refine the educational opportunities and help decrease challenging behavior during instruction time to …

Pbis: Moving Beyond A Focus On Behavior To Relationships, Flor Gomez Dec 2017

Pbis: Moving Beyond A Focus On Behavior To Relationships, Flor Gomez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

School-Wide Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (SW-PBIS or PBIS) is a classroom management system that has become increasingly popular in our K-12 educational systems. PBIS was originally created for special needs students and it is now being enforced in schools with a large number of minority student populations. This classroom management method relies on a token rewards system that focuses on reinforcing positive behavior in the classroom. Issues with this classroom management system encompass it being a form of exclusionary discipline, a student conditioning system, and not a culturally grounded and/or responsive system. For this Capstone Project, teachers and students …

Design And Evaluation Of A Course On Social And Emotional Learning And Classroom Management For Future Teachers In Colombia, Andrea Bustamante

Dissertations

Research has evidenced the importance of supporting future teachers so they are prepared to effectively model and foster prosocial attitudes and behaviors in their students. However, these aspects are often disregarded in teacher education programs. The purpose of this study was to address this gap by designing, implementing, and evaluating a course for future teachers in Colombia. The course intended to promote future teachers’ own social and emotional competencies (SEC) and well-being, as well as their classroom management knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs. It included three components: (1) development of SEC, (2) classroom management approaches and strategies, and (3) mindfulness …

Analyzing The Online Environment: How Are More Effective Teachers Spending Their Time?, Scott Davis Barrentine Aug 2017

Analyzing The Online Environment: How Are More Effective Teachers Spending Their Time?, Scott Davis Barrentine

Dissertations and Theses

Teaching at an online school is so different from classroom teaching that traditional training includes few of the skills necessary to be a successful online teacher. New teachers to an online environment face a steep learning curve in how they'll use the instructional technology, prioritize their time, and establish relationships with their students. The literature has advice for these teachers about effective online practices, but there has been little research to establish which strategies are most effective in motivating students. This pre-experimental study, conducted at an online 6th-12th grade hybrid school, investigated the practices used more often by the most …

Community Versus Traditional Classrooms: Is There A Case For Improved Academic Performance In Elementary Schools?, Jeffrey Elliott Aug 2017

Community Versus Traditional Classrooms: Is There A Case For Improved Academic Performance In Elementary Schools?, Jeffrey Elliott

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This causal-comparative case study compares two scheduling practices to determine if there is a significant difference in English Language Arts and/or math scores among fourth and fifth grade students in a southeast Tennessee elementary school. The first scheduling practice included students in a traditional self-contained classroom. The second scheduling practice integrated a departmentalized and looping model where content specialist in ELA and a content specialist in math taught the students. For the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years, the school administrator assigned half of the school’s student body to a traditional, self-contained classroom and half to a departmentalized, looped setting known …

A Case Study Of Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Use Of "Backdoor Praise" In The Classroom, Cynthia Jean Campbell

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

“Backdoor praise” (BDP) is defined as praise that is simultaneously delayed, indirect, and embedded in teacher comments. This case study investigated preservice teachers’ perceptions of their use of BDP as a strategy for getting and keeping students on task. Three participants, representing elementary, middle, and high school, were observed to collect baseline data on their natural use of BDP. The preservice teachers were then informed of what BDP is and how to use it with students, and they were observed twice more using BDP. Overall, 28 incidents of BDP use involving 21 students were recorded, and 16 of the students …

Self-Management As A Class-Wide Intervention: An Evaluation Of The “Self & Match” System Embedded Within A Dependent Group Contingency, Andrew J. Bulla Jun 2017

Self-Management As A Class-Wide Intervention: An Evaluation Of The “Self & Match” System Embedded Within A Dependent Group Contingency, Andrew J. Bulla

Dissertations

The U.S. Department of Education (2015) indicated that about 95% of students with special education eligibility receive some form of education in the general education setting. Students with disabilities tend to engage in more disruptive behaviors than their non-disabled peers (e.g., Murphy, Beadle-Brown, Wing, Gould, Shah, & Homes, 2005). If teachers are spending more time managing disruptive behaviors, time allocated to instruction is lost. Self-management is one evidence-based intervention that has shown consistent effects on increasing on-task behavior and decreasing disruptive behaviors. Although feasible at the individual level, previous research has identified that class-wide self-management interventions may be efficacious but …

Teacher Self-Efficacy In Classroom Management Amongst Novice Middle School Teachers, Kentyl C. Byrne May 2017

Teacher Self-Efficacy In Classroom Management Amongst Novice Middle School Teachers, Kentyl C. Byrne

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

There is a lack of research pertaining to classroom management solely related to self-efficacy. This dissertation seeks to contribute to the field of literature and understand what support, if any is being offered to pre-service teachers and novice teachers in the area of classroom management. Rooted in Bandura’s (1997) Social Cognitive Theory, this dissertation examines how novice middle school teachers demonstrate teacher self-efficacy in classroom management, and how the teachers achieved their level of teacher self-efficacy in classroom management. Using a blind survey and face-to-face interview, participants demonstrated self-efficacy in classroom management by focusing on routine and procedures within their …

Decreasing First Grade Transition Time Using The Timely Transitions Game, Corinna O. E. Davis

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Everyday in elementary schools, instructional time is being lost due to the multiple transitions that take place throughout the school day. This study focuses on the implementation of the Timely Transitions Game (TTG) as a practical intervention meant to decrease transition times. A single case A-B-A-B whole class design was implemented in order to analyze transition times in a first grade classroom. Transition times were recorded when students transitioned into the classroom from morning recess, lunch recess, and physical education. Results indicated a decrease in transition times during the intervention phases when the TTG was implemented. In addition, an overall …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Induction On Teacher Efficacy, Julie Anne Stanley

Education Dissertations and Projects

States have turned to effective induction programs in response to rising teacher attrition rates and a widening student achievement gap. Comprehensive induction programs that develop highly efficacious teachers report a decline in teacher attrition, an increase in job satisfaction, and a rise in student achievement. The intent of this research was to assess the level of the perceived self-efficacy of fourth-year teachers across the domains of instructional strategies, student engagement, and classroom management following the completion of the county’s induction program. The study explored the induction program’s structure in a large, urban North Carolina county to evaluate the extent of …

An Analysis Of General Education Teachers' Use Of Diverse Praise, Shelby L. Beschta Jan 2017

An Analysis Of General Education Teachers' Use Of Diverse Praise, Shelby L. Beschta

Masters Theses

Teacher praise is a strategy that effectively reduces student disruptive and off-task behavior. Although teacher praise has been studied for more than five decades, most research has looked at general and behavior specific praise. There may be other aspects of praise, beyond specificity, that could inform consultation. Examining teachers' diverse use of praise may inform how to maximize this strategy and improve upon teacher training. The purpose of this study was to determine whether teachers' diverse use of praise could be measured. Once it was determined, the data were analyzed to determine how many diverse praise categories teachers used on …
