“In Black And White, I’M A Piece Of Trash:” Abuse, Depression, And Women's Pathways To Prison, Alexa Adamo Valverde
Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Theses
Women’s lived experiences of abuse and depression are examined within the context of gendered and racialized pathways to incarceration among 403 women randomly selected from a diagnostic unit in a state prison. This study utilizes feminist action research and community psychological methods to understand what factors predict incarcerated women’s placement on the mental health caseload and provides quantitative support for the pathways theoretical framework. Findings indicate that, among the sample, the prevalence of abuse experiences prior to incarceration exceeded 90%, prevalence of mental health problems exceeded 70%, and less than 35% were receiving mental health care. Being Caucasian, experiencing depression …

Research studies on integrating mindfulness into institutions (public and private schools, children’s summer camps) are also evaluated in order to understand the applications of mindfulness practices in terms of children and adolescents. Overall, the research …
Evidence Based Protocol: Improving Depression Assessments In Primary Care, Katherine E. Hoffhines
Evidence Based Protocol: Improving Depression Assessments In Primary Care, Katherine E. Hoffhines
Master's Projects
Depression is a destructive condition that can have a profoundly negative impact on quality of life, wellbeing, and health (Thase, Stowell, Berry, Mencia & Blum, 2014). Worldwide, depression is the leading cause of medical disability costing the health care system over $210 billion annually (World Health Organization, 2014; Greenberg, Fournier, Sisitsky, Pike & Kessler, 2015). The World Health Organization (2016) estimates depression affects 350 million people of all ages globally. One and three adults in the U.S. will experience a major depressive episode during their lifetime (Kessler, Petukhova, Sampson, Zaslavsky & Wittchen, 2012; Rubin, Ciechanowski, Egede, Lin & Lustman, 2004). …

Interactions Between Stress-Induced Inflammation, Glycogen Synthase Kinase 3 (Gsk3), And Depression, Yuyan Cheng
Open Access Dissertations
Major depressive disorder is a prevalent disease that is inadequately treated with available interventions, and recovery is difficult, particularly in patients refractory to antidepressant treatments. Studying the learned helplessness depression model in mice, we examined mechanisms regulating its initiation and regulating its reversibility. Stress increases susceptibility to depression in patients and rodent models, and depression is associated with aberrant activation of inflammation. We found multiple inflammatory cytokines were increased in mouse plasma and hippocampus after a paradigm of inescapable foot shock stress that causes learned helplessness. A 24 hr prior pre-conditioning stress accelerated the rate of stress-induced plasma and hippocampal …

Treatment Preferences And Outcome In A Randomized Controlled Trial For Depression Comparing Supportive-Expressive Therapy To Medication And Pill Placebo, Sophia Elsie Winter
Doctoral Dissertations
Previous research regarding the relationship between patient treatment preferences on outcome has been equivocal, with some studies finding a significant relationship between preference match and outcome, and others finding no such evidence. This study examines the effect of patient treatment preference match on outcome using data from a previously published randomized controlled trial comparing supportive-expressive therapy (SET), to antidepressant medication plus clinical management, and to pill-placebo plus clinical management. The original study included 156 participants receiving treatment at the Center for Psychotherapy research at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. This study is the first to examine the relationship …

Behavioral Activation Therapy In Treating Depression, Brian Strauss
Behavioral Activation Therapy In Treating Depression, Brian Strauss
Counselor Education Capstones
Depression is a prevalent psychological disorder worldwide, and a search for effective treatments—particularly for clients with minimal accessibility to therapy—has been popularized in the mental health community in the last half-century. Behavioral therapy has become very popular for treating depression, most notably by changing maladaptive behaviors and habits into effective behaviors (Gelder, Marks, & Wolff, 1967). Activation Therapy has come to the forefront of behavioral therapy, making use of activity scheduling, problem solving, selfmonitoring, goal setting, and empowering clients to take charge of their treatment. Through restructuring behaviors, habits, reducing brain activity needed for productive thoughts, and alleviating rumination, Activation …
Examining The Associations Between Depressive Symptoms, Body Mass Index, And Physical Activity Self-Efficacy In African American Mother-Child Dyads, Y'Esha Vonyae Williams
Examining The Associations Between Depressive Symptoms, Body Mass Index, And Physical Activity Self-Efficacy In African American Mother-Child Dyads, Y'Esha Vonyae Williams
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
In recent decades the prevalence of childhood and adult depression and obesity has increased worldwide. Multiple factors influence the onset of both depression and obesity. Individual manifestations of depressive symptomatology and health-related problems associated with obesity vary; however, genetics and environmental and psychological factors have been implicated as correlates. Consequently, both disorders can ultimately interfere with individuals’ activities of daily living and decrease their quality of life. African American women are known to have a higher prevalence of obesity and more severe depressive symptoms in comparison to Caucasian women. Likewise, African American children are more obese and experience many factors …
The Prospective Associations Of Stress, Depression, And Social Support With Smoking Cessation And Relapse Among Low-Income Pregnant Women, April Lasha Nellum
The Prospective Associations Of Stress, Depression, And Social Support With Smoking Cessation And Relapse Among Low-Income Pregnant Women, April Lasha Nellum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Maternal smoking is one of the most preventable causes of adverse birth outcomes and poses substantial health risks for both the mother and child. Evidence suggests that increased stress and depression is associated with smoking behaviors, including smoking cessation and smoking relapse. However, few studies have prospectively examined these associations and no studies have examined neighborhood crime, an important stressor for many low-income women, as a predictor of smoking cessation and relapse among this population. The primary objective of this study was to examine the prospective associations between stress, depression, and pre- and postpartum smoking cessation, and postpartum relapse among …
Experiential Avoidance, Depression, And Satisfaction With Life: The Moderational Role Of Regulatory Emotional Self-Efficacy, James E. Sweeney
Experiential Avoidance, Depression, And Satisfaction With Life: The Moderational Role Of Regulatory Emotional Self-Efficacy, James E. Sweeney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Experiential Avoidance (a process of not accepting internal experiences and rigidly attempting to alter the form, frequency, or intensity of these experiences) has been related to a variety of negative outcomes, including heightened depression and decreased satisfaction with life. Because of this, factors that may buffer or account for the relationship between experiential avoidance and these outcomes should be examined. Regulatory emotional self-efficacy may be one important factor that moderates the relationship between experiential avoidance and outcomes, yet no studies have examined this possibility. The purpose of this study was to examine whether regulatory emotional self-efficacy and experiential avoidance interacted …
Levels Of Distress Among Women Veterans Attending A Women’S Health Specialty Clinic In The Va Healthcare System, Debbie T. Devine
Levels Of Distress Among Women Veterans Attending A Women’S Health Specialty Clinic In The Va Healthcare System, Debbie T. Devine
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Currently, between 21.9 and 23 million veterans have served in the United States armed forces. Of those, 2 million are women, and of those, only 6.5% use the Veterans Health Administration system. These females often suffer from physical and mental health disorders, and overall impaired quality of life (QOL), rendering their healthcare needs complex. Seeking, and providing care in this specialty area may become overwhelming not only for the women seeking the care, but also for healthcare systems that are unfamiliar with the specific needs of this population.
A retrospective medical records review was completed of 51 female veterans between …
Brooding, Avoidance, And Suppression As Mechanisms Linking Shame-Proneness With Depressive Symptoms, Melissa Rose Hudson
Brooding, Avoidance, And Suppression As Mechanisms Linking Shame-Proneness With Depressive Symptoms, Melissa Rose Hudson
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Depression is a significant mental health concern. Cognitive-affective models of depression identify that negative emotions and cognitive strategies for responding to negative emotions contribute to the development and maintenance of depressive symptoms. Shame has been identified as a problematic negative emotion and is associated with multiple mental health concerns including depression. Research has begun to examine cognitive emotion regulation strategies individuals use when experiencing shame and how these contribute to depressive symptoms. This study examined three strategies jointly (avoidance, brooding, and suppression) in a three-part prospective design. In a sample of 137 young adults, three hypotheses were tested. Participants ranged …

The present study examined differences in behavioral economic measures of food reinforcement and delay discounting among normal weight women compared to overweight and obese adult women. Effects of symptoms of depression and ethnicity were also examined. Young adult women were given a variety of questionnaires. The current study hypothesized that overweight and obese women would rate food images as being more pleasant, discount money more steeply, have higher food-related reinforcement, and higher demand for food. Overweight …
Depression’S Connection To Self-Harming Behavior In Adolescents, Michael T. Hendrick
Depression’S Connection To Self-Harming Behavior In Adolescents, Michael T. Hendrick
Education Masters
Self-harming behavior amongst adolescents has increased in prevalence throughout America. There is a direct connection between depression and self-harming behaviors in adolescent students. The most common reasons why adolescents participate in self-injury are as a coping mechanism, a means of relief, for the regulation of feelings, self-punishment, attention seeking and sensation seeking. There is often a link between depressive symptoms and negative life events or past trauma. Multiple methods of self-harm are often performed by students and may be carried out several times over the course of many months, the techniques used vary greatly. Schools are one of the most …

Psychological Well-Being And Heart Disease: The Utility Of Mental Health And Management Plans, Jennifer Anne Heath
Psychological Well-Being And Heart Disease: The Utility Of Mental Health And Management Plans, Jennifer Anne Heath
Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores the correlation between mental health and coronary heart disease (CHD) and the usefulness of including mental health treatment into disease management plans. Consistent with previous research and literature regarding the correlation between CHD and depression, results suggest individuals experiencing CHD experience more symptoms of depression, including feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness. Additionally, individuals with CHD also tend to experience more difficulty with relationships and completing household chores. Individuals who have management plans created by their healthcare providers experience less depressive symptoms than those without management plans. This suggests management plans are crucial in the treatment of mental …
Domains Of Social Support That Predict Bereavement Distress Following Loss: Assessing Need And Satisfaction, Jamison Scott Bottomley
Domains Of Social Support That Predict Bereavement Distress Following Loss: Assessing Need And Satisfaction, Jamison Scott Bottomley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Psychological adaptation following homicide loss can prove more challenging for grievers than other types of losses. Although social support can be beneficial in bereavement, research is mixed in terms of identifying whether it serves as a buffer to distress following traumatic loss. In particular, studies have not parsed out specific domains of social support that best predict positive bereavement outcomes. Recruiting a sample of 47 African Americans bereaved by homicide, we examined six types of social support along with the griever's perceived need for or satisfaction with each, and analyzed them in relation to depression, anxiety, complicated grief (CG), and …
Training Affective Flexibility: Effects Of An Affective-Control Training Task On Emotion Regulation, Ashley Marie Malooly
Training Affective Flexibility: Effects Of An Affective-Control Training Task On Emotion Regulation, Ashley Marie Malooly
Open Access Dissertations
Studies have shown that cognitive reappraisal is an adaptive emotion regulation strategy. However, individuals differ in how effectively they use reappraisal to regulate negative emotions such as sadness. Cognitive processes, such as those involved in task-switching, inhibition, and attention, may influence how well an individual can utilize cognitive reappraisal. This study sought to investigate whether a cognitive process associated with reappraisal, affective flexibility (AF), could be trained and could improve an individual’s ability to effectively down-regulate sadness. Also examined were potential effects of AF training on symptoms of depression and anxiety, and transfer effects to emotional working memory. Healthy participants …

Feminine Ideology, Relational Self-Concept, And Internalizing Symptoms In Women, Anjali George
Feminine Ideology, Relational Self-Concept, And Internalizing Symptoms In Women, Anjali George
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background: Investigators have theorized that women may experience internalizing disorders such as depression and anxiety more frequently than men in part because of unique socialization processes that women undergo. One aspect of early socialization thought to contribute to women’s propensity for depression and anxiety is the way women are brought up to relate to themselves in relation to others, often placing greater importance on the needs, desires, and value of others, at times at a psychological cost to themselves. This study attempts to elucidate the relationship between gender socialization, relational self-concept, and internalizing symptoms in women.
Methods: Two hundred and …
Intimate Partner Violence And Victim Blaming, Christine A. Weingarten
Intimate Partner Violence And Victim Blaming, Christine A. Weingarten
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent within the United States leading to millions of people each year being exposed to violence directly, through involvement in a violent relationship, or indirectly, by witnessing or being close to someone who is in a violent relationship. A common societal response to IPV is victim blaming which attributes fault and responsibility to survivors of abuse. Survivors of IPV report victim blaming as one of the least helpful responses when disclosing to an informal social support. Personal experiences of IPV, either directly or indirectly, can affect levels of victim blame because a person who …
Patterns And Predictors Of Parent-Child Endorsement Discrepancies Among Youth At Chronic-Risk For Depression, Bridget A. Makol
Patterns And Predictors Of Parent-Child Endorsement Discrepancies Among Youth At Chronic-Risk For Depression, Bridget A. Makol
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Depressive disorders are some of the most common mental health problems among U.S. adolescents, particularly among Latino youth (Merikangas et al., 2010; Twenge & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2002). When parents and their children provide ratings on the presence and severity of the child’s depressive symptoms, their ratings show only low to moderate agreement (Mascendaro et al., 2012). Research has shown that parent–child discrepancies in ratings of youth emotional and behavioral problems are linked to factors such as parental depression and ethnicity. However, discrepancies research has focused primarily on European American families in clinical settings. Subsequently, research has failed to examine discrepancies in …
Psychological Aspects Of Head And Neck Cancer, Katherine Rieke
Psychological Aspects Of Head And Neck Cancer, Katherine Rieke
Theses & Dissertations
Patients with head and neck cancer may be at increased risk for depression diagnosis when compared to other cancer sites, both before and after their cancer diagnosis. Behavioral risk factors for head and neck cancers, including tobacco and alcohol use, may be indicative of depression before cancer diagnosis. Further, head and neck cancers and their treatments can cause serious morbidity among patients, including physical disfigurement and loss of function. Additionally, these cancers are often accompanied by social stigma, personal shame, and guilt. While there is a significant body of research examining depression in this cancer population, there are still several …
The Role Of Electronic Communication Processes Across The College Transition: Relations To The Maintenance And Formation Of Friendships, Psychological Well-Being, And College Adjustment, Patricia E. Dieter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Friendship experiences play a vital role in the adjustment of adolescents. Late adolescents transitioning to college negotiate the important developmental tasks of both maintaining close hometown friendships and developing new college friendships. Electronic communication has become a prevalent way to quickly and easily communicate, and friendships that incorporate electronic communication with in-person communication are higher in quality (Baiocco et al., 2011). For some adolescents, however, Internet use becomes excessive and problematic (Ha et al., 2007).
The purpose of this investigation was to examine how individuals use different communication technologies with their existing hometown friends and their newer college friends, and …
Depression And Empathy Predict Emotion-Modulated Startle Reactivity, Alyssa M. Ames
Depression And Empathy Predict Emotion-Modulated Startle Reactivity, Alyssa M. Ames
Psychology Theses
Research supports varied patterns of emotion-modulated startle (EMS) reactivity among depressed individuals. The purpose of this study was to examine whether these varied patterns can be explained by depression, empathic tendencies, and emotional stimuli. The EMS paradigm is a well-validated measure of emotion-modulated reactivity in which the magnitude of startle reflexes in reaction to acoustic stimuli are recorded while participants view pleasant, neutral, and negative images (Lang, Bradley, & Cuthbert, 1990). Young adults (N = 120; Mage = 19.54, SD = 1.41; 75% female) completed self-report rating scales of depression symptoms and cognitive and affective empathic tendencies and …
