Attentional Biases, Emotional Arousal, And Post-Event Processing In Social Anxiety: An Eye-Tracking Study, Demet Çek Dec 2013

Attentional Biases, Emotional Arousal, And Post-Event Processing In Social Anxiety: An Eye-Tracking Study, Demet Çek

Open Access Theses

Research across the past two decades has identified attentional biases (AB) to threat as a cognitive vulnerability factor for social anxiety symptoms. However, much remains unknown regarding the nature of the association between AB and other key physiological and cognitive maintenance factors proposed by the cognitive-behavioral model of social anxiety. The current study investigated the relationship between AB to threat and emotional, physiological and cognitive responding to a social stressor in an undergraduate sample (N = 55) using eyetracking methodology. Findings revealed a significant positive association between AB-disgust and subjective emotional reactivity (SER). Furthermore, ABdisgust had a significant indirect effect …

Carbonate Slope Morphology And Sedimentary Processes Along Southwestern Great Bahama Bank, Andrew Jo Dec 2013

Carbonate Slope Morphology And Sedimentary Processes Along Southwestern Great Bahama Bank, Andrew Jo

Open Access Theses

High-resolution multibeam bathymetry and sub-bottom profile data from offshore Great Bahama Bank, covering an area of 6,500 km2, allow an assessment of the evolution of the slope and basin environment. The data reveal a substantial variability in the slope morphology. Three different sedimentary processes (downslope mass gravity flows, margin collapse, and contour currents) control this variability in slope morphology. The deposits that result from these processes produce a consistent facies distribution along the slope, consisting of four morphofacies: 1) a steep upper slope with an onlapping sediment wedge, 2) a toe-of-slope with redeposited carbonates, 3) a basin floor covered with …

Advanced Bathymetry Retrieval From Swell Patterns In High-Resolution Sar Images, Fernando José M. Monteiro Dec 2013

Advanced Bathymetry Retrieval From Swell Patterns In High-Resolution Sar Images, Fernando José M. Monteiro

Open Access Theses

We present an enhanced technique to retrieve underwater topography in coastal areas from swell refraction patterns in high-resolution spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. From a SAR scene with swell patterns propagating shoreward, we compute the peak wavelength and wave direction of each sub-scene; we then obtain depth estimates via the linear dispersion relationship, as long as the wave period is known. Compared to previously presented depth retrieval methods based on the same principles, the innovation of our technique consists of implementing a modulation transfer function (MTF) to account for the dependence of the strength of radar signatures of ocean …

Reservoir Potential Of Cretaceous - Tertiary Redeposited Deep-Water Carbonates: A Core And Outcrop Study In The Apennines And The Adriatic Sea, Italy., Irena Andisa Maura

Open Access Theses

Redeposition of deep-water carbonates is poorly understood. As a consequence, quantifying their reservoir potential for hydrocarbon becomes extremely challenging. As such, this study aims provide a robust assessment of reservoir potential from Cretaceous – Tertiary redeposited deep-water carbonates. A comprehensive sedimentological description and petrophysical characterization includes sonic velocity, porosity and permeability from basinal samples adjacent to Adriatic carbonate platforms. The samples were collected from three areas; (1) Maiella platform margin, an isolated Mesozoic to Mid-Tertiary carbonate platform (2) Monte Conero, an isolated anticline of the distal section of the turbidite facies (3) Well 1, an offshore well in the Adriatic …

Art Imitating Life: How Heteronormative Values Shape And Encourage The Censorship Of Jamaican Dancehall Music, Aleia Walker Dec 2013

Art Imitating Life: How Heteronormative Values Shape And Encourage The Censorship Of Jamaican Dancehall Music, Aleia Walker

Open Access Theses

In 2009, increasingly violent and sexually explicit lyrics led the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica to issue directives severely censoring the broadcasting of dancehall music on radio and television. Dancehall music, a descendant of reggae, serves as a cathartic release for the working-class in Jamaica with lyrics and dances that focus on achieving primal pleasures. Since entering mainstream society, dancehall has been unappreciated by those outside of its following. This thesis seeks to understand the purpose of the offensive lyrics and the subsequent need for censorship by combining various gender theories with the analysis of lyrics, media, government documents, historical contentions …

North Atlantic Deep Water Pathways And Eddy Generation Beneath The Agulhas Current System, Joni Lum Dec 2013

North Atlantic Deep Water Pathways And Eddy Generation Beneath The Agulhas Current System, Joni Lum

Open Access Theses

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has long been an area of study due to its link to climate change. North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) forms the deep water limb of the AMOC, ventilating the deep sea. Using high resolution model output, we show that NADW is strongly influenced by the Agulhas Current System as it flows into the Indian Ocean around South Africa. Eulerian analysis reveals that the high salinity signature of NADW erodes beneath the Agulhas Current System and is deflected to the south by the potential vorticity field. A Lagrangian analysis reveals a high degree of eddying …

The Near-Inertial Response To Hurricane Ivan, Ryan M. Schuster Dec 2013

The Near-Inertial Response To Hurricane Ivan, Ryan M. Schuster

Open Access Theses

As part of a US Naval Research Laboratory Experiment (Teague et al., 2007), fourteen Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) were deployed on the northern rim of the DeSoto Canyon in 2004, as well as four Aanderaa current meters placed at approximately 950 m depth. Preceding placement of this moored array, dozens of conductivity, temperature, and depth probes (CTDs) were ship-cast in the surrounding area. At 0000 UTC on September 16, 2004, hurricane Ivan passed directly over the mooring array, leaving all fourteen moorings intact. Unprecedented measurements of currents in three dimensions and bottom temperature and pressure were recorded during storm …

Feedbacks Based On Hyperspectral Measurements Of The Air-Sea Temperature Difference, Adam Chambers Dec 2013

Feedbacks Based On Hyperspectral Measurements Of The Air-Sea Temperature Difference, Adam Chambers

Open Access Theses

Ship-based measurements of the air-sea temperature difference (air-sea ΔT) are analyzed and presented with a focus on the temperature difference probability distribution and causes of its stability and variability. By taking the measurements with a hyperspectral infrared radiometer, temperatures of both the lower atmosphere and the skin layer of the ocean are acquired by a single, well-calibrated instrument. Consider that for each radiometric cruise deployment, when the air-sea ΔT measurements are plotted in a histogram, a mean air-sea ΔT peak at about -1 K becomes apparent regardless of measurement location or time of year. The large amount of air-sea ΔT …

Improving Hurricane Intensity Forecasts Using 4dvar Data Assimilation Of Airborne Doppler Radar Winds, Patricia Sánchez-Rodríguez Dec 2013

Improving Hurricane Intensity Forecasts Using 4dvar Data Assimilation Of Airborne Doppler Radar Winds, Patricia Sánchez-Rodríguez

Open Access Theses

Over the last decades, researchers have focused on improving tropical cyclone (TC) forecasts. Accurate TC predictions are very important in order to protect life and property. Scientists examine two important pieces regarding TC prediction: where the storm is going and how strong it will be in the future. These are referred as track and intensity forecasts. TC track forecast has improved tremendously over the last several decades. However, hurricane intensity forecasts continue to be a great challenge in operational and research communities. Previous studies have found that the lack of progress in intensity forecasts is partly due to the lag …

“We Found Ourselves”—Music And Identity Among The Chinese American Diaspora In Miami, Yiyu Zhang Dec 2013

“We Found Ourselves”—Music And Identity Among The Chinese American Diaspora In Miami, Yiyu Zhang

Open Access Theses

Chinese American communities have been part of the United States since the 19th century. Presently, their high rates of immigration have made them one of this country’s fastest growing communities. However, in Miami, only 0.3% of the population are Chinese Americans. In this local setting, music serves, in the words of Su Zheng, as an important “signifier that produces complex cultural meanings.” Because traditional music forms one of the most significant aspects of music in China, it is critical to explore the extent to which Chinese American musical culture has developed and changed. This thesis discusses the function of Chinese …

Women With Guns: The Guerrilleras Of The Civil War Of The El Salvador 1979-1992, William Ryan Hamlet

Open Access Theses

Civil war raged in El Salvador from the 1970s through the 1980s as guerrilla armies, united under the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), aimed to overturn what they considered to be an oligarchic repressive regime. Of these FMLN forces, approximately thirty percent were women. Using personal stories derived from a series of in-person interviews with former combatants, this thesis explores the why and how women joined and were included in the guerrilla forces as well as their roles and responsibilities as armed combatants. In addition, given the decade long duration of the conflict, I explore the evolution …

The Role Of Culture In Image Restoration: A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of The Strategies Used By John Edwards And Dominique Strauss-Khan, Isabel Artime Dec 2013

The Role Of Culture In Image Restoration: A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of The Strategies Used By John Edwards And Dominique Strauss-Khan, Isabel Artime

Open Access Theses

Image has become a commodity, an essential asset to both individuals and organizations. When image is threatened, we are compelled to do repair work to help us save face. In the 1990s, William Benoit developed an encompassing theory of image restoration, guiding us through the different options available to organizations and individuals involved in a crisis. However, the study of image restoration has traditionally remained highly ethnocentric, focused on Western culture and assuming that individuals and organizations respond to crises in similar ways, regardless of the particular aspects of the culture to which they belong. This study applies Hofstede's model …

Effects Of Algae Paste Substitutes On The Larval Rearing Performance And Microbial Communities In The Culture Of Cobia (Rachycentron Canadum) And Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola Lalandi), Zachary N. Daugherty Dec 2013

Effects Of Algae Paste Substitutes On The Larval Rearing Performance And Microbial Communities In The Culture Of Cobia (Rachycentron Canadum) And Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola Lalandi), Zachary N. Daugherty

Open Access Theses

Microbial management in the culture of marine pelagic fish is crucial for the refinement of larval rearing protocols and strategies. Standard larval rearing methods employ the addition of live or paste microalgae to culture environments, termed “green water” culture, which promotes the growth of undesired opportunistic bacteria associated with microbial “pioneer” communities. A non-selective approach for the reduction in bacteria by substituting microalgae paste with a non-organic clay additive was evaluated for two marine pelagic fish, cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and yellowtail kingfish (YTK; Seriola lalandi). Both trials induced turbidity using Old Mine #4 Kentucky ball clay and Reed Rotigrow Nannochloropsis …

Determination Of The Permeability Of The South Chamorro Seamount In Mariana Forearc Crust Using Pressure Response To Tidal Loading Method, Putri Nur El Akmal

Open Access Theses

ODP borehole observatory 1200C, drilled into the South Chamorro seamount and instrumented with Circulation Obviation Retrofit Kit (CORK), provided information about natural fluid pressure within this forearc crust. The seafloor and formation pressure data recorded hourly and shown fluctuations that are caused largely by the ocean tides. The data also shown two transient pressures increase at the time of two earthquakes. Harmonic analysis provides a simpler way to analyze the periodic tidal signals that constitute the pressure records. By using the result of the harmonic analysis and applying simple theory of formation response to tidal loading, developed by Wang & …

Feasibility Study Of A Low Heat Rejection Generator Set Engine, Oliver Patrick Jordan Nov 2013

Feasibility Study Of A Low Heat Rejection Generator Set Engine, Oliver Patrick Jordan

Open Access Theses

Internal combustion engine powered generator sets are vastly used worldwide, usually with minimally modified automobile engines. The automobile engine is designed for a very different operation than that required in a generator set, resulting in poor efficiencies when compared to those possible with a more thorough redesign. This research effort investigates the feasibility of using engine parts from multiple engines (principally a Nissan KA24 block and a Nissan Z20 cylinder head) to create a new engine designed specifically for use in a generator set, with a constant engine speed of 1800 RPM. The engine, dubbed the Nissan ZKA26, is fueled …

Effects Of Inundation On Hatch Success Of Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) Nests, Katherine R. Shaw Oct 2013

Effects Of Inundation On Hatch Success Of Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) Nests, Katherine R. Shaw

Open Access Theses

Piezometers were installed along Keewaydin Island (KI) at 55 loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nests to determine water levels within the egg chamber during eight to twelve hour sampling periods and the water’s effect upon embryonic development. Hatching success was calculated by excavating nests and determining the relative proportion of hatched to unhatched eggs. For unhatched eggs, we reported the embryonic stage at which development ceased. In 2012 approximately 46% of the variance in hatch success on Keewaydin Island was due to the inundation of nests. The hatching success of nests on Keewaydin decreased by 2.9% (s=13.5%) after one day of …

Rage Ectodomain Shedding Is A Conserved And Differentially Regulated Process, Alexander E. Braley

Open Access Theses

The Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE) is a multi-ligand cell signaling receptor present on most cell types. Upregulation of RAGE is seen in a number of pathological states including various cancers, inflammatory and vascular disease, dementia and diabetes. Several studies have shown RAGE ectodomain shedding to be but little is known about the regulation and functional effects. Here we show evidence that human and mouse ectodomain shedding is inducible by several diverse shedding stimulators and the basic mechanism conserved. It is also shown here that RAGE shedding likely goes through different pathways, as ionomycin but not PMA shedding is …

Relations Among Social Anxiety, Friendship Quality, And Social Competence In Higher Functioning Children And Adolescents With Autism, Lauren Usher

Open Access Theses

Social anxiety, friendship quality, and social competence have been studied considerably in typical development and autism, but the interrelations among all three constructs have not been assessed. This study examined mean differences in these variables in higher functioning children and adolescents with autism (HFA) and a comparison group of individuals without an autism diagnosis (COM). A mediation model tested whether friendship quality mediated the relation between social anxiety and social competence separately for the two diagnostic groups. Thirty-nine higher functioning children and adolescents with autism and 39 comparison children and adolescents without autism completed a series of questionnaires on social …

Does Us Foreign Policy Achieve Meaningful Results To Stop Nuclear Advancement?, Gabriela Garcia Juarez Aug 2013

Does Us Foreign Policy Achieve Meaningful Results To Stop Nuclear Advancement?, Gabriela Garcia Juarez

Open Access Theses

Despite the vast research by academics and their attempt to explain why states aspire nuclear power, why states transfer conventional arms, and the effect of nuclear proliferation on the probability of war and crisis behavior, little is known why states continue to provide sensitive nuclear assistance despite the catastrophic consequences it may bring. An additional problem to this paradigm is that according to the strategic theory of nuclear proliferation the spread of nuclear weapons threaten the United States and the international peace and security. To increase the understanding of the problem of nuclear development this study focuses on the question: …

The Expanding American Waist-Line: Critical Approaches To Obesity And The Lived Experience Of Body Weight, Brittany M. Harder Aug 2013

The Expanding American Waist-Line: Critical Approaches To Obesity And The Lived Experience Of Body Weight, Brittany M. Harder

Open Access Theses

Throughout this thesis, I argue that the dominant approaches in obesity research do not adequately address obesity. Researchers that take a bio-medical, individualistic approach to treating obesity assume universal standards for bodies and body weight, which do not represent the actual experiences that people have. I argue that the meanings of body weight must be explored in the context that body weight is experienced and that recognizing multiple meanings of body weight is critical in understanding obesity. I interview 15 women who are considered “overweight,” “obese,” or “morbidly obese” by medical standards. I use a phenomenological approach complemented with grounded …

Healthcare Provider Acceptability Of A Behavioral Intervention To Promote Adherence, Katherine Ann Mclean Jul 2013

Healthcare Provider Acceptability Of A Behavioral Intervention To Promote Adherence, Katherine Ann Mclean

Open Access Theses

Adherence to medical regimens is a difficult and costly issue among individuals with chronic illness, with rates of adherence generally less than 50%. Many types of adherence interventions have been developed to address this issue, including educational, organizational, and multi-component or behavioral interventions. Of these interventions, multi-component or behavioral have been the most effective at improving adherence, yet they have failed to produce lasting gains in adherence or clinical outcomes. This may be due to providers’ and consumers’ lack of perceived acceptability of the intervention. Treatment acceptability may significantly affect how an intervention is implemented, as well as its efficacy. …

Mechanobiological Response Of Stem Cells Derived From The Periodontal Ligament And Dental Pulp To Compressive Loading, Anthony Nicholas Khoury

Open Access Theses

Among the debilitating disorders associated with the musculoskeletal system, osteoarthritis and osteogenesis are the most prevalent disorders. These diseases are commonplace among people throughout the world and related healthcare options do little to improve on the condition. While the causes are yet to be fully understood, novel approaches involving stem cell treatments are currently being evaluated. The understanding of metabolic, formation, and degradation processes is simply a stepping-stone leading to the formulation of an innovative treatment. The goal of this study was to assess the chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation potential of stem cells derived from two different cell lines in …

Retrieval Of The Skin Sea Surface Temperature Using Hyperspectral Measurements From The Marine-Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer, Elizabeth Wong Jul 2013

Retrieval Of The Skin Sea Surface Temperature Using Hyperspectral Measurements From The Marine-Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer, Elizabeth Wong

Open Access Theses

This dissertation document details research into the vertical profiles of temperature through the electromagnetic and thermal skin layers of the ocean. The Marine-Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI) is utilized to provide highly accurate, spectrally resolved radiance measurements in the infrared regime which, in turn, are used for the sensing of temperature values within the thermal skin layer depths of less than 1 mm. The inversion equation applied to the high resolution spectra is known to be non-linear and ill-conditioned. To constrain the solution and reduce the errors in this ill-conditioned retrieval problem, the truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) regularization technique …
