Resiliency On The Home Front : Addressing The Needs Of Family And Friends Of Unmarried Military Members During Deployment, Michelle E. Biltz
Resiliency On The Home Front : Addressing The Needs Of Family And Friends Of Unmarried Military Members During Deployment, Michelle E. Biltz
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to explore the needs of family and close friends of unmarried military members. Unmarried military members depend on parents, relatives, siblings, significant others, and close friends for support during deployments, however there is limited research available on the needs of this population. The main research question was: What are the needs of family and close friends of unmarried military members during deployment? A questionnaire was used to recruit participants through Facebook military communities and online military community forums. There were 33 total participants who were asked to identify an unmarried military member with whom they had …
The Role Of Military Leadership In Servicemembers' Perceptions Of Mental Health Treatment, Peter M. Farley
The Role Of Military Leadership In Servicemembers' Perceptions Of Mental Health Treatment, Peter M. Farley
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine how combat veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and Operation Enduring Freedom believe unit leadership in the military addresses the topic of mental health wellness, and how this may influence their individual perceptions on the issue. The specific research question of the study was, "How do veterans perceive mental health wellness is addressed by unit leadership, and how does this affect their attitudes towards psychological treatment in the military? A total of 107 servicemembers completed an online survey consisting of 13 Likert scale and four open-ended questions that …
Call It Courage: The Effects Of Perspective, Humility, Locus Of Control, And Social Desirability On Perceptions Of Accolade Courage In Male Student And Military Populations, Chad Breeden
All Theses
Courage - despite millennia of contemplation - is only now seeing efforts at empirical study and definition. Recent studies have attempted to break down the component parts of courage, but do not address why courage appears to only be bestowed on others and rarely to oneself: a phenomenon known as courage blindness (Biswas-Deiner, 2012). This paper examines how individuals attribute courage to themselves and how they attribute it to others. Male military personnel (n =86) and male college students (n =106) read 14 scenarios of varying courage, rating the courageousness of themselves or another person based on the action. Multiple …

Nursing ETDs
This descriptive study assessed stigma and barriers to accessing mental health services in a convenience sample (N = 211) of Air Force nursing personnel, including 111 officers, 98 enlisted, and 2 of unknown grade, to answer the following research questions: (1) What are the perceived levels of stigma and barriers to accessing mental health services for Air Force nursing personnel? and (2) Does military grade affect perceived levels of stigma and barriers to accessing mental health services for officer and enlisted Air Force nursing personnel? The hypotheses were that there would be no difference between officer and enlisted Air Force …
The Transfer Veteran Student Experience: Exploring College Choice, Transition, And Collegiate Experiences Of Veterans, Shaftone Bryne Dunklin
The Transfer Veteran Student Experience: Exploring College Choice, Transition, And Collegiate Experiences Of Veterans, Shaftone Bryne Dunklin
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The tragic series of events that took place on September 11, 2001, changed the course of this nation and became the catalyst for wars that have spanned for more than a decade. As a result, over 2 million veterans have been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), and Operation New Dawn. In 2008, President George W. Bush signed into law provisions for what has been commonly referred to as the Post 9/11 GI Bill. This legislation substantially increased educational benefits for veterans and has led to an increase of veterans enrolling in institutions of …

Each helmet had seven different impact locations which were put to the test. The project was designed to be used to test ACH military combat liners as well. Due to shipping bottle necks the ACH combat liners have been left to future Cal …
Invisibly Wounded Warriors: The Psychological Repercussions Of War On American Soldiers, Maisy Bragg
Invisibly Wounded Warriors: The Psychological Repercussions Of War On American Soldiers, Maisy Bragg
Honors Theses
The demands that come with war can be both physically and mentally traumatizing and damaging to the soldier in many ways. These psychological injuries manifest themselves in what physicians call Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. The purpose of this paper is to examine Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in American Soldiers by analyzing the training methods, human’s natural aversion to killing, pre-deployment medical exams, type of warfare, and treatment options provided in war; specifically the Civil War, World War I and World War II, Vietnam, and the Iraq War. By taking into account the history of PTSD as a disease, as well as these …

The United States Military Realignment On Okinawa, Kevin M. Evringham
The United States Military Realignment On Okinawa, Kevin M. Evringham
Master's Theses
The United States maintains military bases in foreign countries in efforts to protect American overseas interests, whether they are economic, diplomatic or for geostrategic purposes. In Japan, where the United States has maintained military installations since the end of World War II, debate over the realignment of forces on Okinawa has caused minor, yet growing, rifts in the stable United States-Japanese alliance. Current plans to shift American military forces from Okinawa to locations throughout the Pacific do not take into account the historical or geostrategic factors for their stationing in Japan. This thesis identifies the geostrategic challenges to the current …

An analysis of pre and post RCMAS-2 scores indicated that the mean student anxiety scores remained in the average range after participation in the Same Sky Sharing …
Soldiers In An All Volunteer Force, Joshua Aaron Webster
Soldiers In An All Volunteer Force, Joshua Aaron Webster
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
This work focuses on several themes that deal with the idea of motivation in the military. The primary focus is to view the soldiers in the “all volunteer” force in order to examine their sources of motivation. The majority of sources came from interviews conducted with active duty, reservist, and retired soldiers who were deployed to Iraq and/or Afghanistan. The work examines how the evolution of the “all volunteer” force has changed since its inception in 1973, primarily focusing on the soldiers who were involved in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are several reasons for why a citizen …
“It Was Fight Or Flight...And Flight Was Not An Option”: An Existential Phenomenological Investigation Of Military Service Members’ Experience Of Hand-To-Hand Combat, Peter Richard Jensen
“It Was Fight Or Flight...And Flight Was Not An Option”: An Existential Phenomenological Investigation Of Military Service Members’ Experience Of Hand-To-Hand Combat, Peter Richard Jensen
Doctoral Dissertations
Hand-to-hand combat is one of the more psychologically challenging performance environments for those in the military (Grossman, 1995). Even with the technological advances of modern warfare military leaders still believe hand-to-hand combat is an important and relevant challenge for service members (Blanton, 2007; Clark, 2009; Collins, 2007; Wojdakowski, 2007; Wood & Micaelson, 2000). Despite its importance, the hand-to-hand combat experience has, to date, attracted very little research attention. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore military service members’ experiences of hand-to-hand combat. To accomplish this objective, phenomenological interviews were conducted with 17 male military service members. Each participant …
A Comprehensive Human Factors Analysis Of Off-Duty Motor Vehicle Crashes In The United States Military, Rebecca Iden
A Comprehensive Human Factors Analysis Of Off-Duty Motor Vehicle Crashes In The United States Military, Rebecca Iden
All Dissertations
Researchers have always had great interest in traffic safety and the phenomenon of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs). Though scores of service members are severely injured or killed in off-duty MVCs each year, few studies have addressed the MVC phenomenon within the military population and none have conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the causal factors associated with MVCs involving military personnel.
The main purpose of this dissertation was to gain a greater understanding of the causal factors associated with serious and fatal off-duty personal MVCs for military service members with the ultimate goal of preventing future losses. The HFACS-MVC framework was …
A Gps-Based Mobility Power Model For Military Vehicle Applications, George William Bozdech
A Gps-Based Mobility Power Model For Military Vehicle Applications, George William Bozdech
Masters Theses
In recent years, military vehicles have been equipped with hybrid, diesel-electric drives to improve fuel efficiency and stealth capabilities. These vehicles require an accurate estimate of the power duty cycles during distinct operating conditions. To meet this demand, a GPS-based mobility power and duty cycle analysis is one approach to predict the power requirements of on-road and off-road vehicles. The dynamic vehicle parameters needed to estimate the forces developed during locomotion are determined from the GPS tracking data, and these forces include the following: the motion resistance, gravitational, linear inertia, rotational inertia, and aerodynamic drag. The motion resistance force generated …

George's Last Stand: Strategic Decisions And Their Tactical Consequences In The Final Days Of The Korean War, Joseph William Easterling
Masters Theses
This historical analysis concerns the final ground combat engagement of the Korean War from 24-27 July 1953 at the outpost known as Boulder City. During this period, Marines from George Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment withstood a continuous assault by a reinforced Chinese regiment. The purpose of this analysis is twofold. First, this battle provides a single case descriptive case study as to the linkages between the Strategic, Operational, and Tactical levels of war. By providing the full Strategic, Operational and Tactical context to this battle, the second purpose of this analysis is to clarify the historical …
When Time Stops, Andrew Mathas
When Time Stops, Andrew Mathas
All Theses
This creative thesis is a collection of three short stories centered on exploring modern war and military life in Afghanistan. This collection engages in questions of truth, death, and what it means to live on the fringe of a modern warzone. War is a test of the human condition on both soldiers and civilians, the results of which are often impossible to comprehend. In examining that kind of an environment, I am giving voice to stories often forgotten or overlooked during war — stories that need to be heard if we are to have any hope of understanding our actions …

Participants were demographically separated by age groups …
Assessing The Effects Of Stress Resilience Training On Visual Discrimination Skills: Implications For Perceptual Resilience In U.S. Warfighters, Andrea Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Current military operational environments are highly improvised and constantly evolving, threatening the lives of U.S. warfighters. For instance, since 2001, 60% of all hostile casualties and 65% of hostile injuries in the Middle East theater have been attributed to improvised explosive devices (IEDs). IEDs are powerful physical weapons, and the stressful atmosphere they, and other operational challenges create, can also result in a range of psychological dysfunctions, including anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Not only are these issues concerning for mental health reasons, they are also problematic in terms of combat performance. Extreme arousal (i.e., stress) …
Stress, Coping Strategies, And Marital Satisfaction In Spouses Of Military Service Members, Charlene Haapala
Stress, Coping Strategies, And Marital Satisfaction In Spouses Of Military Service Members, Charlene Haapala
Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers
The literature emphasizes that civilian spouses of military service members experience significant stress, utilize coping strategies, and experience marital issues. A survey of civilian spouses (N = 10) of military service members identified levels of perceived stress, common coping strategies, and marital satisfaction. The focus of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived stress, coping strategies, and marital satisfaction. There were not enough participants in this study to determine these relationships. Descriptive statistics show averages of low perceived stress, and high marital satisfaction. Coping strategies most often used by civilian spouses were active coping, positive reframing, planning, …
Gender And The Boundaries Of National Identity: U.S. Women As A Citizen Class In The Long 1960s, Sara Bijani
Gender And The Boundaries Of National Identity: U.S. Women As A Citizen Class In The Long 1960s, Sara Bijani
Masters Theses
This text analyzes the public ideologies and institutions that underpinned women's unequal status within the national collective of United States citizens during the long 1960s, paying particular attention to the executive office of Lyndon Johnson, Congress, and the national security establishment. Women were frequently framed within these institutions as a separate special class of citizen, with rights and responsibilities not akin to those of the elite—male bodied—members of the national collective. Allowing for the imaginative construction of "women" as a subject class in U.S. society, this text argues that even with the guarantee of formal political rights in place, women …
An Analysis Of Factors Affecting The Effective Use Of Knowledge Management In Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-Ied) Operations, Umit Gencer
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigates factors that influence effective use of Knowledge Management (KM) in Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) operations in the military.
The study suggests that effective KM program is determined by the interaction of three organizational capabilities: knowledge infrastructure, knowledge process, and leadership orientation.
A self-administrated survey was conducted on 300 NATO staff officers who have served in C-IED environments. A structural equation modeling technique was used to test a set of hypotheses using 118 completed responses collected from the survey.
The results suggest that out of the 11 constructs within the model; two are rated as 'attribute needs …
Gender And Leadership: Female Rotc Cadets' Perceptions Of Gender And Military Leadership, Darbra J. Mahoney
Gender And Leadership: Female Rotc Cadets' Perceptions Of Gender And Military Leadership, Darbra J. Mahoney
Educational Policy Studies Dissertations
Gender continues to be an impediment for women in military leadership positions, particularly in Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC) training programs in higher education. This study examines the social construction of gender by female cadets in a predominately male military environment. According to Herbert (1998), female soldiers strike a balance between being feminine enough to be considered a woman yet masculine enough to be considered a military leader—sustaining a view that finds these women are viewed as less than competent officers. Achieving equilibrium between femininity and masculinity is a common thread in much of the literature on female military leadership. …
Of Course A Handgun Can Take Down A Helicopter: Cultivation Effects Of Military-Style Video Games, Michael J. Kurtz
Of Course A Handgun Can Take Down A Helicopter: Cultivation Effects Of Military-Style Video Games, Michael J. Kurtz
ETD Archive
The goal of this study is to add to the literature that extends the theory of cultivation into the realm of video games. Video game studies incorporating cultivation stress the importance of specifying a single genre of video games and measuring the cultivation effect, due to the lack of homogenous content between video games. It is possible that video games are actually an antithesis to the theory of cultivation because of content that is user-generated, which not only dissolves homogeneity between different games, but also the same game. Cultivation research has also suggested that second- order cultivation effects (on attitudes …
Exploring Inter-Organizational Relationships Between Park And Recreation Agencies With Wounded Warrior Programs And Community Service Organizations, Morgan Alexander Mccreary
Exploring Inter-Organizational Relationships Between Park And Recreation Agencies With Wounded Warrior Programs And Community Service Organizations, Morgan Alexander Mccreary
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Public recreation departments are funded primarily by tax dollars and over the past thirty years the percentage of funding needed to operate quality recreation programs has steadily decreased and threatened the quantity and quality of programs offered. Presently, park and recreation agencies partner with community entities to offset funding reductions and to offer new and/or ancillary programs. Importantly, partnerships must provide mutual benefits to be successful and the antecedents and factors of inter-organizational relations (IOR) are important to discover. The purpose of this study was to determine factors that might predict IOR between park and recreation agencies with Wounded Warrior …
Escape Artist, Alejandro Mujica
Escape Artist, Alejandro Mujica
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My thesis, Escape Artist, is a composite novel written as a fictitious memoir, similar in style to Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, that describes my experiences between the years 2001 and 2011. During that time I went through Marine Corps Boot Camp, became a military police officer, patrolled Yuma, AZ, was sent to Iraq for a sevenmonth tour as a security detail just before the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and made it back home four years later. The novel also looks into my struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms, how they affected the people around me, and what …
Blast-Induced Brain Injury: Influence Of Shockwave Components, Dexter V. Reneer
Blast-Induced Brain Injury: Influence Of Shockwave Components, Dexter V. Reneer
Theses and Dissertations--Neuroscience
Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has been described as the defining injury of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF). Previously, most blast injury research has focused on the effects of blast on internal, gas filled organs due to their increased susceptibility. However, due to a change in enemy tactics combined with better armor and front-line medical care, bTBI has become one of the most common injuries due to blast. Though there has been a significant amount of research characterizing the brain injury produced by blast, a sound understanding of the contribution of each component of the shockwave to the …

Ethics In Action : A Study Of Ethical Decision Making In Counterinsurgencies, Marcus Schulzke
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The goal of this dissertation is to analyze the kinds of ethical challenges soldiers encounter during counterinsurgency operations, what decision making processes or values they use to resolve these challenges, and how military institutions and culture influence soldiers' ethical reasoning. The first part of the dissertation is an assessment of various theories of applied ethics and how these can be used by soldiers during counterinsurgency operations. The second part discusses the institutions and cultures of the American Army, British Army, and Israeli Ground Forces. In the third part, I take up the problem of how soldiers from each of these …
Themes Of Trauma And Morally Injurious Events Among Vietnam Non-Combat Veterans: A Qualitative Examination Of The Nvvrs, Thomas M. Hanson
Themes Of Trauma And Morally Injurious Events Among Vietnam Non-Combat Veterans: A Qualitative Examination Of The Nvvrs, Thomas M. Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
To broaden our understanding of traumatic events, Litz et al. (2009) introduced moral injury (MI), defined as "perpetrating, failing to prevent, or bearing witness to acts that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations" (pg. 6). While Drescher et al. (2011) interviewed trauma experts to identify types of events that maybe associated with MI, it is unknown if these themes of events are experienced by non-combat veterans (i.e., Vietnam Era Veterans; N=200). Therefore, this qualitative study identifies the themes of traumatic events reported by a random selection of the non-combat subsample within the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS), and …
