Social Determinants Of Mental Health And Well-Being Among Aboriginal Peoples In Canada, Susan Wingert Dec 2010

Social Determinants Of Mental Health And Well-Being Among Aboriginal Peoples In Canada, Susan Wingert

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The articles in this volume address the question: How do social determinants structure the health and well-being of the Aboriginal population in Canada? The first article uses bivariate statistical tests to assess whether First Nations residents’ subjective assessments of personal and community well-being correspond to scores from the Community Well-Being (CWB) Index, which is a measure of socioeconomic conditions in the community. The second article uses path analysis to test the extent to which the stress process model explains the social distribution of psychological distress and well-being in the off-reserve Aboriginal population. Specifically, it investigates whether stress, mastery, and social …

Home Range, Habitat Selection, And Migratory Pathways Of Canada Geese Wintering At The Santee National Wildlife Refuge, Molly Giles

All Theses

Information on local and flyway-scale space use is lacking for the cohort of migrant geese (Branta canadensis interior) that winter in and adjacent to the Santee National Wildlife Refuge in Summerton, South Carolina. I examined home range and habitat selection of Canada geese in this region. I deployed transmitters on 17 geese (9 VHF and 8 PTT) on wintering grounds at Santee NWR during the winter of 2009-2010. Estimates of fixed kernel home range size ranged from 214.2 to 263.6 ha for VHF-marked geese and 1190.2 to 1915.6 ha for PTT-marked geese. Home ranges of all birds were compact and …

Africanizing The Territory: The History, Memory And Contemporary Imagination Of Black Frontier Settlements In The Oklahoma Territory, Catherine Lynn Adams Sep 2010

Africanizing The Territory: The History, Memory And Contemporary Imagination Of Black Frontier Settlements In The Oklahoma Territory, Catherine Lynn Adams

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation articulates the ways in which black (e)migration to the territorial frontier challenges the master frontier narratives as well as African American migration narratives, and to capture how black frontier settlers and settlements are represented in three contemporary novels. I explore through the lens of cultural geography the racialized landscapes of the real and symbolic American South and the real, symbolic and imaginary black territorial frontier. Borrowing perspectives from cultural and critical race studies, I aim to show the theoretical and practical significance of contemporary literary representations of an almost forgotten historical past. Chapter I traces the sites of …

Travel, Migration And Hiv:Comparing Risk Behaviors Betweennative And Migrant Jamaican Persons Infected With Hiv, Yoran T. Grant Aug 2010

Travel, Migration And Hiv:Comparing Risk Behaviors Betweennative And Migrant Jamaican Persons Infected With Hiv, Yoran T. Grant

Open Access Dissertations

Migration and travel have been significant factors in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic since its emergence in 1981. Understanding the current effects of migration and travel on HIV/AIDS transmission and survival is essential to intervention efforts, especially for immigrants. Previous research highlights differences between immigrants and native ethnic minorities, but few studies compare immigrant groups to their peers in the country of origin. The overall objective of this study was to explore the relationship between migration, travel and risk behavior among Jamaicans infected with HIV. This dissertation study analyzed HIV/AIDS registry data from the New York City Department of …

Identification And Explanation Of Regional Development Poles In Haiti, Carline Noailles May 2010

Identification And Explanation Of Regional Development Poles In Haiti, Carline Noailles

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The concentration of the population and socioeconomic activities in the Metropolitan Area of Port au Prince (MAPAP) in Haiti has a negative impact within MAPAP and on the socioeconomic development of the entire country. This phenomenon, known as urban primacy, is increasing at an unprecedented rate in developing countries. Urban primacy in the Third World is explained by scholars studying the phenomenon and by dependency theorists. Economic decentralization, based on growth pole theory, is one of the most frequently used policies for slowing the growth of primate cities by focusing on development poles. In Haiti, the potential growth poles are …

Tracing Deuterium Through The Food Web And Into Birds And Mammals Along An Elevational Gradient In The Southern Rocky Mountains, Matthew Baumann May 2010

Tracing Deuterium Through The Food Web And Into Birds And Mammals Along An Elevational Gradient In The Southern Rocky Mountains, Matthew Baumann

Biology ETDs

Animals incorporate local δ2H values from available water and dietary sources during tissue synthesis, which can provide evidence of elevational movements if multiple tissues with different turnover times are examined. Here we test the applicability of using δ2H as an indicator of altitudinal movements by examining multiple tissues (δ2Hbw (body water), δ2Hfeather, δ2Hfur, and δ2Hclaw) in birds and mammals in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Additionally, we measured δ2Hsw (stem water) and insect δ2bw and δ2wb (whole body) values to assess changes with elevation. We sampled 15 species of birds and two small mammal species along with potential food sources …

Cip4 And Src In Promoting The Migration And Invasion Of Breast Cancers, Christina S. Pichot May 2010

Cip4 And Src In Promoting The Migration And Invasion Of Breast Cancers, Christina S. Pichot

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

Cellular invasion represents a critical early step in the metastatic cascade, and many proteins have been identified as part of an “invasive signature.” The non-receptor tyrosine kinase Src is commonly upregulated in breast cancers, often in conjunction with overexpression of EGFR. Signaling from this pathway stimulates cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and frequently involves proteins that regulate the cytoskeleton. My data demonstrates that inhibition of Src, using the small-molecule inhibitor dasatinib, impairs cellular migration and invasion. Furthermore, Src inhibition sensitizes the cells to the effects of the chemotherapeutic doxorubicin resulting in dramatic, synergistic inhibition of proliferation with combination treatments. The …

Impact Of Globalization On Socio-Economic And Political Development Of The Central Asian Countries, Karina Orozalieva Apr 2010

Impact Of Globalization On Socio-Economic And Political Development Of The Central Asian Countries, Karina Orozalieva

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this thesis is to understand the economic, social and political impacts of globalization on the Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Central Asian countries in general. The empirical studies based on panel data analyses and the case study on Kyrgyzstan demonstrate that the socio-economic effect of globalization on development of these countries is twofold. On the one hand benefits produced by globalization such as migration and remittances can be useful for economic development in the short run. They take a role of a "shock absorber" of the challenges that are associated with transition to a free market economy. On …

Give Me Your Engineers, Your Ph.D.S, Yearning To Fund My Welfare State. Fiscal Crises And High-Skilled Immigration Policies, Mariana Medina Garciadiego Jan 2010

Give Me Your Engineers, Your Ph.D.S, Yearning To Fund My Welfare State. Fiscal Crises And High-Skilled Immigration Policies, Mariana Medina Garciadiego

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Points systems, immigration policies in which potential immigrants make an application to enter the country and then are selected on the basis of their skills, age, and occupation, have been proven to be more successful attracting high-skilled immigrants, but very few countries have implemented them. This is particularly paradoxical since high-skilled immigrants are more beneficial in fiscal terms: they are expected to pay more taxes than low skilled immgirants, and not depend heavily on government provided welfare. My core argument is that left of center governments in liberal welfare states implement points systems during a fiscal crisis as a mean …

Mechanisms Of Decorin Inhibition Of Vegf-Stimulated Human Trophoblast Migration And Acquisition Of An Endovascular Phenotype, Neena Lala Jan 2010

Mechanisms Of Decorin Inhibition Of Vegf-Stimulated Human Trophoblast Migration And Acquisition Of An Endovascular Phenotype, Neena Lala

Digitized Theses

The human placenta is a highly invasive tumour-like organ in which fetal-derived trophoblast cells constitute the major cell type. A subpopulation of trophoblast cells, known as extravillous trophoblast, invades the uterine decidua and maternal arteries to establish sufficient fetal-maternal exchange to maintain healthy utero-placental homeostasis. Trophoblast invasion is highly regulated by a variety of factors at the fetal-maternal interface. Decorin is a member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan family, produced by the decidua, and is a negative regulator of trophoblast invasiveness. I hypothesized that decorin inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-stimulated endovascular differentiation and migration by interfering with signalling pathways …

A Scale-Dependent Examination Of Stopover Decisions In Migratory Passerines At Long Point, Ontario, Stuart Alexander Mackenzie Jan 2010

A Scale-Dependent Examination Of Stopover Decisions In Migratory Passerines At Long Point, Ontario, Stuart Alexander Mackenzie

Digitized Theses

Stopovers, periods o f rest and refuelling between migratory flights, play an integral role in determining fitness o f migrating passerines. Migration success is dependent on decisions made about when to arrive and leave particular stopover sites and how to utilize regional landscapes. I used mark-recapture analysis o f bird banding data from a stopover site and direct measurements from radio telemetry data covering a stopover landscape of~20 x 40 km at Long Point, Ontario, to examine stopover decisions. Specifically, I estimated probabilities that individuals would leave a site in relation to age, fat stores, season, and the extent to …

The Role Of Gli1 In Eralpha-Negative Breast Cancer: Promoting Survival, Migration, Invasion, And Metastasis, Yeon-Jin Kwon Jan 2010

The Role Of Gli1 In Eralpha-Negative Breast Cancer: Promoting Survival, Migration, Invasion, And Metastasis, Yeon-Jin Kwon

All ETDs from UAB

Glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1 (Gli1) is a well-known oncogene and a transcription factor that mediates several signaling pathways important for tumor progression, such as hedgehog, TGFß, Ras, and EGFR. Although Gli1 is known to play an important role in cancers of brain, skin, prostate, and the pancreas, the role of Gli1 in breast cancer was not previously well-defined. Therefore, this dissertation focuses on defining the role of Gli1 and the mechanism underlying Gli1-mediated transcription in breast cancer. Interestingly, the major findings of the dissertation clearly indicate that Gli1 promotes cell survival and is predictive of a poor outcome in Estrogen …

Habitat Use, Movements And Spring Migration Chronology And Corridors Of Female Gadwalls That Winter Along The Louisiana Gulf Coast, Jacob M. Gray Jan 2010

Habitat Use, Movements And Spring Migration Chronology And Corridors Of Female Gadwalls That Winter Along The Louisiana Gulf Coast, Jacob M. Gray

LSU Master's Theses

The Louisiana Gulf Coast is an important wintering area for North American gadwall (Anas strepera). Conservation of winter habitat is a top priority of the Gulf Coast Joint Venture. Quantitative estimates of habitat use by wintering gadwall would help improve energetic demand models and subsequent estimates of habitat requirements. I used satellite telemetry (PTTs) to estimate winter habitat and refuge uses, spring migration chronology and corridors, as well as inter- and intra-regional winter movements of females. I used a split-plot MANOVA to evaluate the effects of individual females, female age, winter, hunt periods within winter, time of day, and all …

Control Of Muscle Fatty Acid Oxidation Capacity And Fatty Acid Transport Proteins In Migratory Birds: Effects Of . Photoperiod And Leptin, Daria M. Zajac Jan 2010

Control Of Muscle Fatty Acid Oxidation Capacity And Fatty Acid Transport Proteins In Migratory Birds: Effects Of . Photoperiod And Leptin, Daria M. Zajac

Digitized Theses

Avian migratory flights are fuelled by fatty acids. Fatty acid transporters and oxidative enzymes are seasonally upregulated in flight muscle to meet the demands of this intense exercise. The effect of photoperiod and leptin on fatty acid transporters and enzymes was studied in captive birds. Sparrows exposed to migratory photoperiods increased flight muscle FAT∕CD36 and H-FABP mRNA by 154% and 589% respectively, and had 32% higher H-FABP protein than birds in a non-migratory photoperiod. Migrants increased activities of flight muscle CPT, CS and HOAD by 57%, 23% and 74% respectively, and decreased LDH activity by 31%. Photoperiod manipulations did not …

Migration, Retention And Dissolution Of A Dnapl In A System Containing Physical And Chemical Porous Medium Spatial Properties, Andrew Oleniuk Jan 2010

Migration, Retention And Dissolution Of A Dnapl In A System Containing Physical And Chemical Porous Medium Spatial Properties, Andrew Oleniuk

Digitized Theses

Contamination of the subsurface environment by chlorinated solvents is a significant issue facing the remediation of sites contaminated with dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). A twodimensional laboratory-scale experiment was used to explore DNAPL migration, retention, and dissolution. Variations in porous medium grain size and wettability were used to jointly explore the impact of heterogeneity on DNAPL behaviour. Migration experiments suggest that porous medium wettability can greatly increase the entrapment of DNAPLs within fine-textured sand lenses. Simulations of DNAPL migration, using different constitutive relationships, suggest that the predictive capabilities of numerical models depend on the predominant wettability of the system. Experimental …
