Curriculum And The Elements Of The Earth: Deconstructing Sustainability And Reconstructing Responsibility, Elizabeth Alford Pollock Dec 2010

Curriculum And The Elements Of The Earth: Deconstructing Sustainability And Reconstructing Responsibility, Elizabeth Alford Pollock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In October, 2009, I attended a presentation on Sustainability where the argument was made this concept is an issue for government and administrative agencies. The problem with this summation is in its exclusion of individuals existing outside of these agencies who interact with their environment on a daily basis. This exclusion potentially encompassed an extinguishing effect in that it closed off the term to multiple interpretations and possibilities I believe sustainability possesses; a "closing" that does not provoke the liberating nature associated with more open forms of dialogue and engagements. My dissertation explores the myriad ways sustainability can be interpreted …

The Buck Stops Here: The President As Manager Of The U.S. Economy During Crisis, Carol D. Walker

Political Science Dissertations

The President performs many roles, but one role of increasing importance over time is that of Chief Manager of the Economy. In the era of the modern presidency, there has been a growing institutionalization of the executive branch’s management of the economy. Presidents approach economic management differently depending upon their personalities, management style, and their time within both the crisis and the administration. Three case studies will be used to explore the differences and similarities in presidential actions during times of economic crisis: these case studies will examine the presidencies of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Richard M. Nixon, and William J. …

Weapons Labs And City Growth: Livermore And Albuquerque, 1945-1975, Layne Rochelle Karafantis May 2010

Weapons Labs And City Growth: Livermore And Albuquerque, 1945-1975, Layne Rochelle Karafantis

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis traces the transformation of two cities in the American West: Albuquerque, a medium-sized metropolitan area in the generally low-population state of New Mexico, and Livermore, California, a relatively small town on the fringe of the massive San Francisco Bay Area metropolis. The federal government built nuclear weapons labs in both places after World War II, and as a result, they encountered phenomenal growth. This is not surprising, as authors such as Peter Hall and Ann Markusen have argued that federal installations in the postwar years affected the economies of many western cities. However, this thesis asserts that rural …

The Economic Impact Of Cash-For-Clunkers, Andrew J. Gorup

Honors Capstones

The Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (CARS) program, more commonly referred to as "Cash-for-Clunkers", was created to stimulate the economy and to have more fuel-efficient cars on our nation's roadways. In the summer of 2009, in what may turn out to be the worst period of the housing/credit crisis related recession; the Federal Government appropriated a total of $2.88 billion in vendor rebates for the purchase of new fuel-efficient automobiles with the trade-in to be destroyed. The goal of my research is to examine how the Cash-for-Clunkers program impacts different groups of people, from the family buying a new …
